    Very well-spoken, and an awesome video overall. Just needed to say one thing that I think is important: Although one may be able to boot, all that indicates is that the IMC and the set voltages are sufficient to achieve some form of signal or communication between CPU and DRAM. It is very unlikely that the max bootable config is even remotely stable, usually, it's a config with significantly adjusted values. Stress testing is absolutely crucial because memory errors will absolutely nuke W10/11 and I can imagine that many people use their PCs for competitive gaming and work tasks. This is definitely a cool feature though.

      @@WootDini I didn’t actually know AIDA also did RAM tests. I personally like to use HCI and that’s been able to get me daily profiles; the Pro version is also quite a bit cheaper than AIDA haha. The fact that it managed to get 5000C19 is crazy to me though. What DIMMs were those if I may ask?

    This is a great feature - it took me days to dial in my RAM settings on my previous board, so when I upgraded to the X570 Torpedo I thought "here we go again..."
    I decided to try Memory Try it - with some manual voltages at the SoC - and it booted in straight away. Only a few timings actually matter, so I brought those into line with the DRAM Calculator for Ryzen and booted again. My RAM is 1000% Memtest stable👍🏻

    I'm a bit confused by this. If the advice is to continue up the chart to test better settings then why are the CL ratings not reversed? For instance DDR4 3600 CL16 is faster than DDR4 3600 CL18. Sure the frequency increases are obvious, but with CL rating lower is better, so shouldn't the ratings be reversed as you progress up the chart?

    • @techluvin7691
      @techluvin7691 Рік тому +2

      Actually no. You have to loosen the timings in order to have stability and also so it boots. MHz will always trump Cas latency. Once you reach your maximum clock speed on a set voltage like 1.4v you can either increase voltage to clock higher or start tightening down your timings……..primaries / secondaries / thirds / rtl’s and iol’s / etc.

    • @pbjandahighfive
      @pbjandahighfive Рік тому +3

      @@techluvin7691 sorry dude, but what you're saying doesn't seem to have anything to do with what I was referencing, unless you actually just don't understand what you're talking about at all, because ddr4 3600 cl16 ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT QUESTION IS FASTER than ddr4 3600 cl18, but in the BIOS under "Memory Try It!" they are swapped as it goes down the list from slow to fast. The CL timings should be reversed on the list as lower CL timings are faster. also you're just flat out wrong saying that "MHz trumps Cas latency". For instance a 3200MHz CL14 is faster than a 3600Mhz CL18 and on avg will return the data about 1.25ns faster.

    • @techluvin7691
      @techluvin7691 Рік тому

      @@pbjandahighfive Thanks for the kind words………..NOT…………I actually do know what I’m talking about as I’ve been overclocking ram since the XT days. Lower cas latency does not necessarily equate to faster memory. There are a plethora of other important timings to consider. I will always lean towards increased clock speed over lower cas latency.

    • @silentleges7988
      @silentleges7988 Рік тому +1

      On DDR5 memory the base CAS latency, I believe, is 36 or 40. So the original reply is correct. The higher your MT/s or MHZ, the higher your CL becomes by necessity. The higher MHZ/MT per second speed trumps the higher CL in most situations.

    Hi, thanks for this video. It is very useful. I hope you can help me with a question. I have a DDR4 128GB 3600Mhz Kingston Fury Renegade kit with an i9-13900K, the RAM kit has the following XMP profiles: 1 at 3600Mhz and 2 at 3000Mhz. Whenever I use the XMP 1 I can post to W10 but I have random blue screens which doesn't happen with XMP 2. With the mem try it feature the XMP 1 passes but I can't get it to work stable at that frequency when editing videos or playing games.
    Is there a safe way to configure the RAM frequency to run at the advertised speed (3600Mhz) as I'm running my PC with the RAM kit set at XMP 2 with no crashes so far?
    Thanks so much in advance for the help.

    • @WootDini
      @WootDini  10 місяців тому +1

      Heya.
      Xmp 2 is a much safer preset as it does not push the ram as far as 1 does.
      If you feel like you are skilled enough, I would recommend checking the jedec standards for that ram kit and manually putting in the timings and frequency. I hardly use xmp or expo because manual timings are far more stable.
      What you can try do is see if try is had 2 3600 profiles and go for the higher cas latency preset.
      It's my fault for not putting in the video to stability test the ram on memtest or ycruncher. But even if you do 1 pass on memtest that should indicate if the profile is stable.
      You can also try 3400 and see if that works?

    What if your ram isn't on the motherboards Qualified Vendor List? I was having a hard time getting some qualified quality ram about 3 years ago so I bought what I could get. The bios was defaulting to 2400 with my 3600 CL18 ram with XMP activated. I finally manually set it to 3200 CL16 18 18 36 basically trial and error because I didn't use a ram calculator. @@WootDini The ram always worked. It was more of a matter of XMP wouldn't work with it. The Try It! didn't seem to work until I manually set the speed and timings the first time. Until I manually input the speed and timing, the Try It would always revert to 2400. I combined two sets of Timetec ram, single rank 3600 CL18 that I had been running in 2 dfferent computers and it isn't running as good as I'd like. I will just use it at 3200 CL16 18 18 36 as it seems stable. Even 3333 with those timngs at 1.4V gives me artifacts. Of course I'm running 4 single rank sticks of ram now instead of two. Every motherboard 'trains' the memory. Then reads the XMP profile, sets the few timings in it (if you enable XMP, not otherwise) and checks for correct operation. It's fast test, happens at boot time. It doesn't catch everything. So you can boot with unstable RAM. You can't rely on only memory training. Windows will also run on unstable RAM, until it doesn't. I've updated to the most recent patch, I might roll it back a bit if the latest msi bios patch is bugged though.
      What I meant is, doing what I do, you don't have to reset the CMOS, you just go back into the bios and change it after the hard reset. It's quicker my way :p
      I've tried XMP (which completely failed to boot) and memory try it and only 2-3 options work. Weirdly, 4000Mhz worked, but it was unstable.
      To get 3200-3600Mhz to work, it's going to take a lot of configuring and trial and error and tbh, messing around with frequencies, voltages, timings and all the other complicated options is out of my league, I'm concerned I might brick my new PC that I just built!
      3066Mhz runs well anyway, maybe one day I might revisit it, but without an in-depth guide for my exact setup, it's not likely to happen anytime soon. We'll see though!

    The clock / CMOS battery on my MSi x399 board looks like its hidden under some plastic trim on the board.
    Would pulling it delete any saved configuration on the board and revert to stock?
    Got Corsair : CMW16GX4M2C3600C18 sticks in there but theyre not officially suported for threadripper.
    2x 8 GB sticks running in dual channel.
    hesitant to try the try it feature as it loooks really tedious to get to the battery if need be with the massive cpu cooler I got. probably has to disconnet all IO and move the computer somewhere to work on it and remove said cooler. do the thing, reapply thermal paste, hook everything back up and continue trying.
    The platform is getting old and 1920x wasnt a gaming cpu to begin with though it does fare okay, but I wanted to give it a little boost getting memory sorted to about the best it can be.
    I hear x399 oficcially suports 2600MHz memory, but a lot of people say they push 3000MHz easy with certain sticks with some tweaks in the bios and even faster 3200MHz seem common. and I think that probably would help A LOT overall.
    My 3600MHz corsair sticks defaulted to like 1000- 1100-1300MHz or something like that. XMP profile 2 just bluescreens on bootup, XMP 1 boots and runs fine but checking the stick speed in windows theyre not running whatever the xmp said they would, theyre still far below. 1667MHz infact... which is.. well not brilliant.
    So here I am.
    Searching for answers.
    If anyone is running 3000MHz or somewhat faster on a x399 1920/50X Id love to know which exact sticks you got, and what your memory config/setup looks like in the bios in terms of voltages, timings and all that.
    I havent really tweaked anything else in the bios apart from the smart fan profiles. CPU everything is stock/auto.

      @WootDini I CANT 😭😂 4800mhz is the base speed so there's no option for XMP

    • @silentleges7988
      @silentleges7988 Рік тому

      @WootDini It's an MSI Z690 board. There's no XMP option because I have the base speed of DDR5 RAM. XMP is obviously used to automatically overclock your RAM but since mine is just the base speed of 4800mhz there's no option to turn on XMP for it. I have the XMP icon in the BIOS but it's grayed out.

      @WootDini Absolutely. One of these days I'm going to upgrade to a 6000mhz RGB kit. When I built my rig anything faster than 4800mhz was like 50-100% more expensive and even more if it was RGB lol

    • @silentleges7988
      @silentleges7988 Рік тому

      @WootDini In the US at least, RGB only adds like $5 to the cost of a kit now. The price on faster kits has definitely become more affordable.
