I think this is the single most important piece of information I've ever heard about classroom management. They should impart this advice on every teacher candidate while they're still in their credential program!

As a 30 plus year veteran middle school teacher. I was screaming YES. YES. YES all the way through both of your videos!!! I love middle school kids. They need is. They can..will.
.produce amazing art if they know you are supportive.

This comes to me at the most perfect time in my first year of teaching middle school art (it’s the day before I return from February break). I cannot thank you enough for this and look forward to part two (and many more installments!!). Perhaps it might eventually become a book or a regular advice vlog. This real life survival guide is filling a niche that is completely void of advice and real world suggestions and empathy for what we go through daily. I am grateful to you for this & need more of your words & reassurance in my life!! Thank you one million times over.... you’ve single handedly gotten me excited about returning to school tomorrow 🎨

Thank you so much for this. I just started teaching art this year to k-12. I only do projects with them and not sure if this is enough.

Well done from this old timer. My teaching career spanned back to 1968 and would last nearly 4 decades. It was 38 years when I retired in 2006. I then got called out retirement for the 06/07 school year and put in three more years. In the 60s all we needed was a year of teachers college and you were qualified. But I also studied art and music in uni. It's a very different world today at school , then it was when in began in the early days. My first few years I had all of the "arts" courses in an elementary school. I commend you teachers today shaping young minds, it is a tough world our children are going to be apart of. My last year teaching in 2009 I knew it was time for me to permanently retire and make room for the fresh blood.

Older teachers need to hear about how to handle engagement - this is so excellent. Our admin thinks it is all about engagement, so we are barely supported.

Thank you for this advice. I will be listening to much more as I learn my way around. I am going to college now to be an art teacher. Middle school is the age group I want to teach. Trouble is, I’m middle aged and should have been at this for years. I started out years before, but in my area, art teachers weren’t a thing back then. I got discouraged when looking at the reality of finding a job in my area. I didn’t want to move. So I quit. Well, wouldn’t you know it, these many years later, schools in this area are searching for art teachers. I started back last year. Now my struggle is “do I have enough good years in me to make this worth while? “ whether I do or not, I’m finishing my degree! But I hate the thought of being an inexperienced teacher in my 40s. Grant it, I have been a foster parent, an adoptive parent and have had several kids of different ages and backgrounds in my home. That helps me a little I guess.
But your advice is invaluable to me! Thank you for making these videos.

This was very helpful and insightful. Thank you 👏🏾👏🏾 I’ve been teaching at community centers for 5 years but I am one month into middle school art in DC and… you hit the nail on the head. It’s 1 or 2 that cause the domino effect. But they are all each very engaged 🤦🏾‍♂️
