  • The Mangbetu tribe with elongated heads
As the saying goes, “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. What appears to be a major deformity of the skull is considered a symbol of great beauty and social standing in the society by the Mangbetu people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
‘Lipombo’, the custom of skull elongation, was a status symbol among the Mangbetu ruling classes at the beginning of the 20th century and later evolved into a common ideal of beauty among the peoples of the northeastern Congo, not until the middle of the 20th century, when it was outlawed by the Belgian government.
Mangbetu people live in Central Africa, in northeastern Congo. Found in the remotest parts of DR Congo, the Mangbetu people have a distinctive physical appearance that is largely highlighted by their elongated heads. They can be found between the Ituri and Uele Rivers near the towns of Poko, Isiro and Rungu.
They are said to have initially come from modern day Sudan before migrating. While settling down in their current location, the Mangbetu established their kingdom under Nabiembali who had warriors. He subdued various tribes and ruled over them. The language of the Mangbetu is referred to as Kingbetu.
While some people may view their physical feature as a serious deformity, the Mangbetu people consider it a symbol of beauty, prestige and power. In the ancient times, members of this tribe considered the skull deformation as a sign of higher intelligence and a status symbol among the ruling class.
Their elongated heads gave them a distinctive look. At birth the heads of babies’ were tightly wrapped with cloth in order to give their heads the elongated look. Deformation usually starts just a month after birth for the next couple of years, until the desired shape has been reached or the child rejects the apparatus.
The custom of skull elongation, called Lipombo by the natives, was a status symbol among the Mangbetu ruling classes, it denoted majesty, beauty, power and higher intelligence.
The practice started to die out in the 1950s with the arrival of more Europeans. It was also outlawed by the Belgian government, who ruled over colonial Congo.
This deformation usually didn’t affect the brain. As long as intracranial pressure remains the same as that of a normal person, the brain is able to adapt and grow into the new shape of the skull, resulting in no damage beyond cosmetic changes. They say the brain, being an elastic organ, can grow or expand into the desired shape without any form of damage or deformity.
Although the practice was outlawed by European colonialists, who invaded the country in the 1950s, some members of the Mangbetu tribe still practice it to date. Because of this distinctive look, it is easy to recognize Mangbetu figures in African art.

Fascinating. I've heard of people using rings to make their necks appear longer and binding feet to make them more petite, but I hadn't seen much about this other than a picture or two somewhere. Thanks.

I believe this is due to conquest and slavery in the pre-colonization period by the West.

    As a conspiracy:
This shape of the skull is very similar to the shape of the head of aliens, as they are drawn in the "classics". And hairstyles are very reminiscent of halos of saints in Christianity.

How does one know, if information regarding this tribe comes from the rothrockefellerbildeburg informational construct? Likely, because since we were all “enlightened“ about the physical attributes of these fine people, not a drop of information about their telepathic and psionic abilities🤔🤦🏿‍♂️🫵🏿
