      When Pulp Fiction came out Tarantino was still largely unknown. John Travolta was a has-been. Uma Thurman and Sam Jackson weren't major stars. Okay Bruce Willis was a star and that was it--but it wasn't a "Bruce Willis movie", it was him playing a supporting role.

    • @threeminuteshate
      @threeminuteshate 2 роки тому +3

      Right? I had seen the trailer for it on a vhs I had rented and thought little of it. Then a friend of mine said he went and saw it and as he said “I don’t even know how to describe it.” He and two other friends of mine went the following Friday night COMPLETELY unprepared for what we would be seeing. We all left the theater talking about it as if it was the greatest movie we’d ever seen. And for four seventeen year olds we may have been right at the time.

    It's really interesting to compare the two directors' (Redford and Tarantino) histories with regard to their filmmaking: Redford's context is one of American culture writ large and its more recent history. Tarantino's is that of a guy who grew up basically just consuming movies, scripts, and all aspects of films themselves.
    Kind of explains quite a lot.

      They both said in their initial review that Reservoir Dogs felt like a letdown after its opening sequence, while acknowledging Tarrantino's obvious talent. They later revisited this review in the Tarrantino special, and said that Pulp Fiction delivered on the promise offered by Reservoir Dogs.
      IIRC many years later, someone asked Ebert on Twitter what he thought of Reservoir Dogs in retrospect and he said something to the effect that all of Tarrantino's films get better with each subsequent viewing.

      While I think that criticism can be leveled at Tarantino's work generally, I really don't believe it applies to Pulp Fiction. The non-linear narrative is not merely a gimmick in the movie but an essential part of the storytelling. At first glance, Pulp Fiction does seem to be a hyperstylized, violent crime picture. In reality, it is a story about moral redemption. Even though Butch was prepared to murder Marsellus, he refuses to abandon him to the fate of his captors and intervenes to save his life. In return, Marsellus forgives Butch for the earlier betrayal. Jules comes to believe that God has intervened in his life and is called to renounce the life of violence he had led up to that point. Vincent remains on his criminal path, and it leads him straight to his own death.
