  • Sometimes you got to get your hands dirty.
Rough Justice '84 is a strange case of a game that's fantastic and horrible at the same time: and one where even I sit here and look at my review and wonder if I got it right. In other circumstances it may have scored a lot higher, in others a lot lower, and overall is a game that I could have done a two hour review on. But god knows we don't need to see that, so I take the next 25 minutes to tell you about what Rough Justice 84 is, and why it frustrated me yet made me want to play it more.

Thanks a bunch for the review! With almost 70 hours logged, it definitely looks like you got a good handle on the game. You raised quite a number of interesting and valid points; some of which have already been addressed in post-launch patches.

24 minutes is waaaaaaay too long of a review, Especially for a game that only got a 71...

First of all: Thank you. It's been a while since I've got a direct criticism like this on a review, and it's sorta refreshing.
I will acknowledge that my reviews are long in general, and yeah, I get it. I'm not someone who does a good job of being short and to the point: I'm the guy who usually overexplains things. I can do it in a Steam Review type format, but not in video, even if I do have the 5 minute reviews earlier in the channel. It's something I will fully admit that I struggle with, and it's one where I know I need to somehow focus on if I want to make it to a larger audience when it comes to indie games. Usually, my weakness is how to chop out and what, because end up finding good reasons to keep certain elements in, and for the flow of the review. I like giving specifics and examples, and that usually extends the review more and more. I''ve thought of things like a 2 video type situation, where I do a short review of 5 minutes, but then have a video review of the longer one, for people who want more detail. Granted, that's a ton of work.
I have been better on that lately then I used to be (god knows some of my older 40-60 minute reviews really could have used that), but it is something that I'm trying to improve, but I keep on mis stepping
I will counter on the 71 point however. Again, part of my review system is the enhancer system, aka score adjustments for more subjective things. A good amount of the points do get explained in the length of the review to complement those enhancer points, but that means the game could be a 90 for the right person. Or a 50. So yeah, if this was using the normal review system, I could see it, but even with a normal review, explaining the high/lows for people to understand if they can ignore the lows is a big part of it.
Thanks for the direct comment, I do really appreciate it.

@@Dragnix likewise it's very rare that content creators give lengthy replies. I always did (on my other channels)... because I actually cared about what I was talking about. But usually you'd be happy just to have a thumbs up or whatever.
There are a LOT of places where you could stand to cut two, three, or even FIVE minutes here or there. At the start of the video you begin by talking about the pricing, for example... which probably is neither relevant, nor true depending on when the viewer is watching the review... or where they're watching it from. Like right now... today... It could easily be $24.99... in Canada. Or something less than $19.99 in Romania. So you could've left that out entirely.
The rest should happen before you even begin recording: What really is... and isn't... important for someone considering a purchase to know.
One thing that a lot of reviewers do is give sort of a brief summary of their overall thoughts on the game right in the very beginning... and use the rest of the video to explain that stance. That way people who just want to know if they should buy this game or not are able to walk away with something... instead of just skipping to the next video. And people that want to know more will at least know, ahead of time, that the information they're looking for is going to be explained somewhere in this video.
Since you didn't give such a summary in the beginning... I just skipped to the end. Because I wasn't willing to sit through 24 minutes not knowing whether or not the info that was important to me would even get addressed.
I did LOVE the Enhancer System though! I felt that gave your review a unique quality and I wish more reviews had something like that.
So I guess where I'd lean if I did these kind of reviews would be towards BULLET POINTS. What are the five most important things about this game? I'd highlight those five things in the beginning of the video, spend the rest of the video explaining them... and the rest? They can either watch a separate play-through video where you explain the mechanics... or they can simply buy the game.
      Your call, however...

@@davidhawkins4241 I'm letting you know I'm going through these right now again and again, and I'm really thinking about them in terms of how to apply them to how I review things. I need some time on it, but I really want to thank the direct feedback.

I'd say its more like 25 minutes, since its 5 seconds away from 25 minutes.
