Mama Julieta's healing food in 9 languages

  • Namaskaar to all
    Since my previous video of "Bruno's prediction of Isabela's power" got quite a boom in the views recently, I thought of continuing the same concept for another song of Encanto - "Family Madrigal".
    I noticed that unlike most other languages from Europe, America and even most of Asia, Mirabel's mom Julieta is famous for feeding people her scrumptious Arepas, which is a popular treat in Colombia and other Latin American countries as well. HOWEVER, in my mother tongue Hindi, the transcreation changed Arepa to "sweets" and...this made me wonder, how many countries across the world ditched the Arepa for something different as the iconic healing dish of Julieta.
    Lo and behold, the following 9 languages are the only ones which changed Arepa to something else in their transcreations of Family Madrigal!
    1. English (and most other European, Asian and American languages) - AREPA
    2. Hindi - MEETHA | SWEETS (I put the Gulab Jamun in there cuz I had an immense craving for it while making this video, and "sweets" have way too much variety in India, more than my tongue can ever taste in one lifetime for sure AHAHA)
    3. Indonesian - PANEKUK | PANCAKE
    4. Korean - OGSUSUPPANG | CORNBREAD
    5. Russian - LEPYOSHKA | RUSSIAN FLATBREAD
    6. Serbian - PITA | PIE (don't confuse with the "pita bread")
    7. Mandarin (Taiwanese) - Mǐ bǐng | RICE CRACKERS/CRISPIES
    8. Telugu - CAKE
    9. TURKISH - PIDE | TURKISH FLATBREAD
    Thanks to all the UA-camrs who helped me translate these lines and find out that Mama Julieta is indeed a Michelin Star multi-cuisine chef-cum-doctor XDD
    So, which of these dishes would you be glad to try if mama Julieta serves them to you from her own cookhouse? XD (For me - all of them as long as they're vegetarian :P)
    Hope you enjoy the video ksks.

    I always appreciate Disney translations. They never get it word for word when they get translated but they always figure out how to twist it just enough so kids still get the basic idea and still make the melody fit.

      The Indonesian branch for this movie were not really that good though. Most of the lyrics are word for word and it's really hard to understand it. The lyric doesn't flow so well with the song too. Other songs are pretty good but not for Encanto songs and I'm just sad about it.

    The Taiwanese Mandarin one is not rice crispies, it means "corn pastry" literally and is the circulating translation for corn flatbread, corn tortilla and arepa in Taiwan.

      From the information I got, the word used in Taiwanese Mandarin version is "Mǐ bǐng" which translates to "rice cakes" or "Rice crackers/crispies". When I googled that term I got pictures of rice crispies in majority, hence I used it. In case I am wrong, do let me know the correct term and I would fix it in the description or in a pinned comment. Thank You.

    Based on the experience of comparing the translation and the original of my country (Russia), I want to say that there are two options for translating the text:
    1. By sound. (if we are talking about the translation of songs, it is not always possible to bring in the original meaning, the words may not be consonant or too long/short, or it is not possible to find a rhyme for the word)
    2. Concepts that are not familiar to the russian audience. If it is possible to replace (for example, alebrijes and ofrenda are not spoken in Coco, either an another word (wonder beast) or a more general term (tradition) is used), then they will replace it. We can say that the official dubbing in my country almost completely cuts out terms unfamiliar to the russian audience. On the one hand, it is more convenient for understanding by the younger audience, on the other hand, the culture represented in the work is missed.
    (I apologize in advance for errors in the text, this is a translation from russian, the translator may not be able to translate some phrases normally)

    • @mol_puglivaya
      @mol_puglivaya 2 роки тому +2

      The only option for the russian viewer in this case is to watch in the original language with subtitles (often even with subtitles in the original language, because russian subtitles can be created on the basis of official dubbing), which, for example, a child cannot afford. Therefore, only people who speak a foreign language at a sufficient level know about replaced and omitted words. And it makes me very sad.

    Also, russian was one of most strict dubs that replaced names of everything. I mean other languages, like Ukrainian, Kazakh, have many original words, but when you watch Russian Encanto you have zero idea about who's "Abuela" because no one ever say that word, there's always "Babuska". People don't understand what happened to Agustin, because no one says about bee stings. Arepas just gone, and every Tio\Tia was replaced too. Songs are so different from original, so many people don't get what's going on.

    • @_S4rcasm_
      @_S4rcasm_ 2 роки тому +1

      I agree with you but, translating the whole movie is hard. You have to make sure the words rhyme. And Russians (for example) won’t understand what the word Abuela means or Tia/tio. The translators try very hard to match the original but that’s really hard! Isnt it obvious who abuela is since she does introduce everyone in “the family Madrigal”? For instance saying “моя тиа пепа” just sounds wrong to me (as a Russian speaker) thanks for reading! (Tell me if I misunderstood something!)

    • @VGEvery
      @VGEvery 2 роки тому +1

      @@_S4rcasm_ Да, я знаю. Тиа звучит странно, как и абуэла, арепа, и многое другое, но полагаю на Украине тоже не знают что это такое, однако всё равно решили оставить. В русском дубляже ведь оставили "La familia Madrigal", хотя что такое "ла фамилиа" - тоже не все знают. Но по контексту вполне понятно.

      The translation for the Japanese verses are more or less as follows: "as for my mother Julieta / she can heal people with her food / it's really effective / isn't my mother amazing? / stop it! (said to Julieta after the kiss)"

      @@amizielamy5051 the meaning can be said in a lot of ways, for example Let it go in Cantonese has a VERY different lyrics but for lot of people these are one of the bests lyrics ever, so I don't think that the meaning is a problem, you can say the same in different way
      For Example : Instead of saying "I just made something unexpectedly, something sharp, something new" you can say "I just made a different plant, not cliché, something new"

      @@dasnet6846 Maybe you right and the translators (or the big chiefs) doesn't care about Colombian culture, I still want to give the benefit of doubt and think is more about making a good song with correct grammar.
