Today we are carding beautiful Art Batts! This tutorial goes takes you through the basics of carding an Art Batt! Today Marie demonstrates how to make a fun gradient effect on an Art Batt using some of our fairy favorite colors! We are working with 19.5-micron Merino Top and embellishment fibers on our Fancy Kitty Motorized "Little Tom" Drum Carder. The same principles taught in this tutorial can be applied to Manual Drum Carders as well.
Marie shows multiple methods for feeding fibers onto the Drum Carder, and gives insight and tips on how to get the best results for your custom Carded Art Batts.
We are so excited to carry Fancy Kitty Drum Carders from She & I Designs. There are various configuration options you can choose for your drum carder, including the drum size, TPI (teeth per inch) and motorization options.
These fabulous Drum Carders are made in the USA and are the very same Drum Carders used in the Living Felt studio! Create your own custom art batts or roving from wool and various other fibers to use in you felting or spinning! 🧚♀What color combinations are you dreaming of for you art batts? We want to know! It might just be inspiration for a future carding video! 👀
This one is perfect for spring! I love when complementary colors are used. Orange and Turquoise, for example. Sky backgrounds would be nice too.
A lovely forest blend would be nice.
citrus colors and then another one with blues, lavender and violet/purple
I would love to see deep dark jewel colours
I would love to see a mixture of darker colors that could be used for animals. Not defined lines but a more blended one that can be used for background animals. I would love a small carder but can't afford on a limited income. Are the board ones you hold heavy? I have the hand ones but I'm never happy with the mixture. Marie, you make it look so easy and your choices of colors and textures are "right on". Thanks for always sharing your knowledge in easy to understand descriptions. God bless you, Rodney and all the beautiful fairies for all you do for us.
My vote is for a lucky St. Patricks Day blend!!! Thank you! That was fun.
Those colors are gorgeous. Makes me think Spring! Can't wait until it's here.
every batt you made would make a perfect pillow cover, so beautiful
What a great work, and beautiful colours. Spring greetings from Scotland
Such pretty wool! 😍 Thanks for sharing.
Oh boy more stuff to buy! YAY
I love watching the carding
If only I could afford a drum carder! Not this year! Wedding to plan 😊 Love the beautiful rollags they make! Learning to spin w/drop spindle. Thank you for this yet another beautiful wooly Wednesday tutorial ❤
I wish I wish that looks gorgeous!
so fun to watch the drum carder. Thank you!!
This is super neat!!!!
Liked the overlap batt the best! Loved the Angelina in it! Vicki Bedeian
I always have payed them all on tray but liked how you did individual ones. Vicki Bedeian
Great video! I can't wait to see how you use it. I'd love to see some ombre yellows!
That was very relaxing to watch! Beautiful blend of colors choices, too :)
See you soon, waiting
I love the colors
I'm so glad there's a little bit inexpensive version of the Brothers Drum Carder bc they rarely go on sale on that site. I'm checking y'all out. Thanks for the tips 😄
Have always held high when painting on good tip to paint them on holding lower , Vicki Bedeian
This was such a helpful video! I'm still trying to figure out how to make pretty batts, so this was great! Could you maybe show a closeup of that pick sometime that comes with those carders? I'd like to find something similar for my Ashford to get some of the stuck bits of fiber out of it.
Hi from Iowa! Vicki Bedeian.
I love making batts, that is my next project to make dragon wings.
Mermaid batt, ocean blues
with some luster fiber
I've been working with your wool and have my greens, yellows and oranges out, citrus colors, they look so pretty I haven't put them away yet because they are so pretty! That might make a beautiful batt. Also shades of blue with a little lavender and purple mixed in.
It was a good video. I have a blending board and it have to try using it!
browns with copper and light to med blues
Can’t order one as I bought a different one from you guys last year. Would have loved a motorized one! 😏
Love this!
Woodland colors
Great complementary colors!!!! Looks like a spring watermelon!! This is totally unrelated but will you bring someone on that teach a class in making felted boots?
I was so inspired by Living Felt's/Marie's carding video, which aired this past fall, that I purchased this drum carder - a Christmas present for myself. This new video provided so many helpful hints - thank you!
Great video Thank you ❤
So quick and what beautiful results. Loved the blended batt but it would depend on the final use of the batt. Don't see this machine in my immediate future but I can dream. As always your instructions are very much appreciated.
The troubleshooting tips and instructions are helpful and make it look easy. I would like to see how it is used for a project, so maybe a background batt.
I really found this extremely helpful and interesting. I have a drum carder and I learned several new tricks here. The hanks so much.
I have the ashford wild card but now I want the motorized little Tom!
Yeh!
reds, pinks, whites,
blues, greens, purples
oranges, yellows and greens
i will find a use for evey batt
sorry i miss the live show
Another question, can I use the cleaning brush that comes with the Ashford carder to pack down the fibers like you did in this video with the brush? Looking it up, it looks like I need the teeth going the other way for burnishing. Do you think the Kitty brand brush would work with my carder?
Do you press the burnishing brush or just use its own weight ?
Is this live? Missed the start. Hi from North East UK
The weekly videos are prerecorded now, but Marie is often in the chat!
Marie do you spin? Vicki Bedeian
Oh, I dabble...not a proper spinner tho! I like to make bulky, funky yarns for wet felting with :)
they are expensive.......but a girl can dream, RIGHT
Decadent BLENDS. I know of I ordered a drum carder, id get sucked in and never STOP blending. And would never be able to finish a project!
