@@ontheroadadventure they are very high in calories roughly 4000 per 24 hour ration packs, the biscuits are good on the road as they block you up the gun will relieve this with us added laxatives haha. In general I really enjoyed them especially the puddings.

I find it interesting that you are using Coleman gas to power your cooking because you are touring Normandy and during the war, there was a small Coleman gas stove in every American Sherman tank. I don't know if they were included with the British Shermans, but I do know that they were much sought after by infantry as well. Basically the arrangement was the same as you are using with only the technology being different. Ive been an enthusiastic camper and backpacker all of my life starting in high school and I am well acquainted with the old technology. You would fill a small tank at the bottom of the set up with petrol, then there was a pump which you manually pumped air into the tank to create pressure. There was a valve that regulated how hot you wanted to make it burn, and a flange attachment that allowed you to place a pot on where you could boil water, or like you are doing with the plastic army ration pack, the soldier could place a tin can with a variety of different food items from condensed milk to canned vegetables into the hot water to warn the contents. But they had to make sure that pressure inside the can did not build up and perhaps make the can explode. Then also had an early form of powdered coffee and some cheese in cans. thanks for showing that nice Fire Maple stove set up. When I backpack, I do not like the modern propane stoves because I find a certain romance with old time backpacking gear and I use a petrol fueled Sven stove, a design from the 1920s. Again, same set up, fuel at a small tank at the bottom, a stem, a burner that is made of brass as is most of the stove. You do not have to pump the Sven, there is a small channel in the petrol tank that runs around the stem of the burner. You put petrol in the channel or use fire starting paste, and set it alight. In a very short period of time the heat builds up pressure in the fuel tank and as the fuel starts shooting out of the stem into the burner, the fire sets that alight. It is not a constant hiss but rather sounds like a pulse jet like the old V1 rocket sounds like. So it pops... pops...pops very fast. Where ever I have camped where there are other backpackers they are all using propane bottled gas and hearing my stove they come over to see what the noise it and they see a beautiful all brass stove heating up water. The aluminum pot that serves as a cover for the stove when it goes into the backpack is very small, about 8 ounces or a cup of coffee size. However, it works just fine especially when using freeze dried meals. You just cut an opening in the bag and pour the water in and fold it closed and in five minutes you have a meal for one or two people. I have very little idea what the old hikers did for food, perhaps they cooked rice or potatoes in water or a can of vegetables since canned vegetables goes back well into the previous century before the Sven stove was invented. Thanks for another fun video!

It'll be interesting to see how you get on with it, as I believe you normally use a trangia. I normally use the Fire Maple but was thinking about getting a trangia also. Fire maple for boiling the water for coffee/tea and the trangia for cooking, as I believe you get extra pots with the trangia. Keep us posted on how you get on, please.
Still loving all your vids 😊

    • @ontheroadadventure

Each has its perks, this one is small and portable simplicity at its best. The firemaple Saturn grill for example is perfect for grilling meat etc but is a one trick pony… one that I love deeply though! Firemaple also do a copy of the trangia but at a much cheaper cost, it’s marginally bigger than the Trangia though

Nice review. I use one of the well know other brands, and as you say, these stoves are brilliant for a quick brew, cooking up some one pot dinners, or heating up MREs. We didn't get your opinion of the rations - is that coming? I personally think they are pretty good and great for an easy/quick meal when you don't have the time/energy for a full on cook up.

Some people slag off the army rat packs but I think they are very good, had a few 24 hour boxes that contain 2 main meals and a breakfast, only negative was the one with a muesli breakfast that was 🤮. I use a Crusader cooking system with a triangia burner, not the fastest but packs down very small.
