This is intense but it's so clear and organized and so pretty at the end - definitely motivating and worth it if you have the time and find shows/movies/resources on things you love.
apparently my toxic trait is I'm only motivated by the most intense study methods .-. I love using it though because it's so pretty and lets me watch shows I love too!

Thanks for sharing this Bianca! I've done something similar in the past but I only wrote the words/phrases I didn't know so it was more so sentence mining rather than creating a graded reader.
I've watched Who's the Murderer for many years throughout my learning Mandarin journey. I much prefer variety shows to dramas. I'm not sure if you've heard of the Hacking Chinese challenges but starting on March 10 to the end of March the challenge is reading! I already have a plan to read 3 issues of the Path to Chinese magazine but I'll have to make time once the challenge is over to try reading your advanced graded reader!
I'm actually excited because like you said, typical graded readers get boring and uninteresting. I think reading the magazine and then your graded reader will be a good way for me to get comprehensible input and learn new words while being engaged. 加油!
I also prefer variety shows to dramas, but its so hard to find them on sites that have downloadable subs .-. takes me two or three times as long to work through a variety show versus a drama, but the content is so rich in cultural references, humor, accents, and whatever else you could ask for!
I haven't heard of the hacking Chinese challenge, but that sounds so interesting! you could also make your own graded reader for the magazine and just naturally incorporate that into your studies!
@@bianca.phdinprogress The magazine is already basically a graded reader so there's no need for me to do that! There's different articles for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners with a vocabulary list. Making my own graded reader would be really time consuming but I'm sure it'd be worth it!
This is soooo cool! Language learning is moving forward so fast these days.

@@bianca.phdinprogress definitely, when I look back at the situation when I was so eager about learning English back at age 14 (which was long before you were born I presume), there was nothing available and now it multiplies like mushrooms.
I’ve made similar materials from interviews on UA-cam. Copy-paste into a document, use Google translate, and the learning happens when I try to tidy it all up.
I’m motivated because I am interested in the person interviewed and what they are discussing
thats so awesome! I would say to be careful with google translate, cuz it can be wrong sometimes, but as long as you corroborate it with other online tools you should be good!!
@@bianca.phdinprogress Ha Ha! Google Translate is usually awful! That's why it's such a great learning tool, because it forces you to fix all it's mistakes!

Great inspiration, Bianca, thank you for taking the time to make the video. Have only been sentence mining plus HSK and Boya so far which is a bit of a disjointed approach, so I'll try out this idea. I've got my eyes on 冰雨火 (Being A Hero), it's going to be challenging for my level but it's going to be full of modern, day to day expressions that will ultimately be a lot more useful than the standard textbooks. Plus it's with 王一博 which makes staring at the screen a lot more bearable 😅
tbh even if it's challenging, at a certain point interest in content trumps "perfect comprehensible" content. even if it's theoretically the most useful content at a 90% comprehensibility level for language acquisition, if you can't get yourself to use it because the interest/motivation piece isn't there, it doesn't really matter lolol. good luck with your studies!!!

I really like this idea. I've been working on Italian and I think I'm at a point where something like this would make a lot of sense. Going to give it a shot. Thanks for sharing! I'm not sure that I know the answer to the question at the end 😅
I personally find it more approachable than convincing someone to use Anki flashcards all the time, even if it takes a ton of time to make. You can always adjust it to go through an episode slowly or doing only the parts that are most integral to your learning at that point in time to make it less time intensive! good luck with Italian!!

There’s a 6- episode mini-series on UA-cam I’ve been struggling to follow, a “slice of life drama” like ur shows, and I really want to be able to understand them! I’m going to buy some fun 5” x 8” notebooks and transcribe it myself, lol, make it even harder on myself haha. I’m learning Russian so while I can’t directly use ur materials, I’m definitely using ur formatting as my inspiration/template! I can’t wait, this will be fun.

i love this idea so much!!! i'm going to start using it with my korean. do you think it could also be applied to variety shows? for some reason i think it would be confusing, but maybe it will work! i'll give it a try :)
I actually did it with a variety show! check out my description for a free pdf download ("advanced graded reader") of a murder mystery variety show! the thing that is more challenging is that you have to figure out who's saying what, and they can talk over each other sometimes, so you need to decide what audio is clear enough to add. good luck with your Korean learning!!!!

All I can say is that you've heavily motivated me into learning Chinese (currently sticking with Mandarin), and I cannot thank you enough for it. I have not started yet (too many study sessions and existential crises to deal with), and so I'm curious about what you'd recommend for a person who is an absolute beginner at Chinese to start with?
wow that's so nice!! so glad to hear that some of my stuff has been helpful hahaha. feel free to read through this post I made on my website awhile back for everything you need to know as a beginner! it could be a bit overwhelming at first though, so just take it (and any advice that you find on the internet) with a grain of salt. Be kind to yourself in your study sessions and give yourself room for breaks as well. try to have as much fun with your learning as possible or else you won't be able to continue on the marathon that is language learning!! you got this!

This seems like a fun (but intense) idea. I might try this with Japanese since I kinda feel the anki burnout you mentioned 😅 As for the question, I spend far too much time on youtube and the only answer I can think of is stuff like icebergs videos, top tens, rankings, video essays etc. Anyway great video as always ;D
lololol damn maybe I should've done an iceberg video. is there enough language learning content on UA-cam to make an iceberg without turning into a tea channel? LOL
But Bianca yeh UA-cam gives you a transcript and IF CREATOR GAVE TRANSLATION, it's perfect in the 2nd case and you can just click the 3 buttons below any video and see the transcript. And Click subtitles to see if it has it in say French if you are learning French!

Hey Bianca what do you think of the Refold 1k Mandarin Deck instead of the HSK Deck? Any reasons you didn't choose the Refold deck?

I've been thinking of creating my own subtitles for some of my favorite shows and using it with MPV. I've noticed on some shows the subtitles are not verbatim and it really bugs me lol.
yeah, if you noticed in the video too, I didn't translate into English because subtitling is just a very challenging thing to do. I did have the English subs on in the video in case I got stuck, but realistically subtitle's have to choose between word fidelity or meaning fidelity, which is a very challenging thing to do. not to mention when you add jokes or word play. Verbatim subtitles can be amazing for learners but will also remove any cultural references that could be common knowledge in your target language.
@@bianca.phdinprogress I understand. I was referring to Chinese character subtitles and how they don't always match the spoken language, not English. I guess it provides more context for those who are fluent but it kinda sucks for language learners. Most shows are pretty accurate though.
