I'm currently doing a BA in literature and history but as a mature student (30s), I know that at some point I want to go on to a masters but I want to give myself a decent break because I'm already looking at my shelves longingly wanting to read for pleasure again haha - I feel like both literature and history are two of the most dense subjects for reading expectations going 😂

Hi! Your video popped up on my homepage. I’m also a literature student (Indonesia literature) currently doing my master’s degree, and I can totally relate to this whole video 😭. Sometimes in the middle of research, I find myself questioning why I’m doing this. It feels very lonely, and I often blame myself for being so slow in my progress, frequently comparing my journey in my bachelor’s degree to my master’s, which is so different. Yet, I’ve learned a lot through this process as a researcher and human being. Good luck with your PhD journey! Your research is important, but so is your well-being 💓

Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. I love that a lot of us can relate to being a researcher that loves their work, but that still has moments of frustration and loneliness! I look fondly at my BA and MA years, but I try to remember how much effort I put into them. I think it is easy to romanticize your past degree, but I’m sure you are going to do amazing on your MA! Also, Indonesia Literature sounds fascinating, would you like to recommend me something I could read in translation?

Hi Isabel! I’m a new follower currently in high school and want to be a professor! I wanted to ask what made you choose english and to be an English professor? Thanks and I’m so happy I found you such a big inspiration! 💗

Hi! I’m glad you find me inspiring! I’m first gen, so I used to look for inspiration online as well. So nostalgic! And what a great question. When I was in elementary school I wanted to go to culinary school, than I thought I might study art history and work for a museum, but in middle school I found out that literature was someone one could study in university. I had no idea! I had never met anyone who had done that, so I approached my Spanish teacher and asked for advice. He studied linguistics, but gave me some advice. I had always loved reading classics, so I tried to read as much as I could on my own. Coming from Mexico and knowing I was going to study in the US, I googled lists of mandatory reading in American high schools and I read almost everything there in preparation. Still, it wasn’t until my first semester of BA that I realized I wanted to be a professor. In high school I saw that no one paid attention in class and the literature teachers were also not interested in their teaching, so I thought I wouldn’t like teaching a group of uninterested teens. So, I started uni with the idea of doing English as my major and picking marketing or communications as a minor, all to eventually work in a publishing house. Yet, when I experienced a university English class I realized that it made a world of difference to what we did in high school. So I eventually did my major in English with a minor in comparative literature. At the end of my BA I had an internship for a small publishing house in LA, but Covid happened and it got canceled. My last attempt was with the penguin random house internship for 2021. I passed 2 filters but they went with someone that was willing to relocate to New York. That made sense since I was already on track to move to Switzerland and I had no financial means to move to NY for an unpaid internship. Then I moved to Switzerland and did my master in literary studies. During the masters I had the chance of teaching a BA seminar in Puerto Rican poetry, and that experience made me more secure in my decision. Next semester I will teach a course on Contemporary Mexican American literature, which makes me very excited! That is kinda of my academic journey, but I would like to stress that you don’t have to become a professor or a teacher if you study English. Some of my former classmates went to very different industries and only very few are doing a PhD right now.
I hope this is helpful and any way, don’t hesitate in asking questions to as many people you can! 🍁
Oh, and thanks for watching ;)

I want to know from what university are you pursuing Phd? I too want to apply for phd in English? But a bit confused though, may I do a Phd in English Language or Literature? Or, are there any other branches in which one can pursue a phd other than language and Literature within English Department?

Hi! I would prefer not to say the name of my university for safety reasons. Depending on the university you apply and how the programs are structured. For example, my PhD is in Literary Studies, which can be done with the department of English, Spanish, Slavic, French, etc. That is different from the doctoral degree for English linguistics that is only through the department of English. So it highly depends on the university. Do you want to pursue Anglophone literature or linguistics?
