- With Tilian Pearson being out of Dance Gavin Dance for yet another time, this time not allegation related supposedly, I wanted to go into some of the potential reasons why that may be the case and why this 'parting ways' could be more than meets the eye. Is this awkward tension lingering over from the allegations period, is he wishing to work more on his solo projects, is it something unrelated entirely, a combination of all of the above or none of the above? We may never fully know. But what're your opinions on this situation?

I wanted to go ahead and tackle this topic as I did not speak of it when it happened the first time, so I very much wanted to the second time. What're your opinions on this situation and the band as a whole? Let me know down below; feel free to go wild with your own theories. I think that last part is the explanation that makes the most sense. We saw them in Vegas last year and hours before the concert we saw them at the sushi burrito place and every single band member was there, except Tillian.
Oh wow, that'd make a shit ton of sense with that being known, yeah--thank you for sharing that. I don't really care what anyone says, when someone is that disenfranchised and has to be gone for a large period, you can't be the same. Fuck, you see that happen in friend groups, even. If someone's gone for a long while--good or bad--it's gonna have an impact. And if that someone was gone for something as severe as sexual assault allegations in this day and age, I just cannot imagine it wouldn't be jarring to just come back together and act like nothing was wrong.
He’s always been like that. We found him drinking at a bar alone in the city before a show they played. He was nice to us, but the rest of the band wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
They traveled to Japan some years ago, and, from the pictures they shared and even from Andrew's lyrics at the end of Billy Royalton, it was apparently a very good time for all of them.
However, the pictures include them all - Tim included, rest in peace - except for Tilian. So I am not sure if the entire band went on a fun trip without him, or if he went with them but didn't want to go on their hangouts.
That is just one of countless examples of Tilian isolating himself from the band. The single time I went to a DGD concert (I am brazilian, and they only came here once), I managed to take a picture with all of them - again, Tim included - except Tilian, who was nowhere to be seen when the rest of the band came out to meet the fans after the show.

Your not alone there. I went to see them back in 2016 in Denver and at the end of the show everyone lined up to take a picture with the band all except Tillian. When I was leaving I saw Tillian on the other side of the bus smoking alone..I ended up getting out taking a picture with him 😅 so I guess indifferences have been going on for a while?
I don’t think it’s that deep. Tillian got married recently, they bought a house. It’s clear from his social media he spends a lot of time with her. DGD is well known for being a party band. I think he’s just moving on.

I believe the creative differences story. Acceptance Speech blew me out of the water. He brought Tides of Man energy to the vocals. But I think the Tillian DGD Saga peaked at Mothership. Both of these albums had no skips but it was downhill for me after that. Not to say that each album didn't have it's high points. Instant Gratification was a solid album in the interim, Jackpot Juicer was another solid album RIP Tim.
I agree with you about the creative differences but I don’t think they peaked with Mothership at all. It’s my favorite album but JJ is a close 2nd. Andrew is NOT Tilian and honestly I really don’t care for him lol

Tilian and Jon's dynamics are just incredible ugh haha. my favorite DGD records came from this era so it just bums me out

Maybe I’m old but Kurt Travis is my preferred DGD vocalist. The albums with him are my favorite.
@@TheMetalTempestYT Same. I got into DGD maybe 5-6 years ago and have loved everything Tilian did with them but not nuts about most of the stuff before that. I think their new stuff with just the other 4 was good but it's not the same. There is just something divine about Tilian's and Jon's contrast. If they get a new singer, I don't know if I'll like it anywhere near as much. Plus, of course losing Tim was a huge blow and universal loss. Still, the last several albums were amazing and I'm just glad I got to see them live once with Tilian singing and Sergio playing bass.

trying to be objective here. I think the main mistake they made was bad communication. every time a statement was released, nobody really knew what was going on... everything I thought I knewabout this situation: one girl was proven to be a liar who hooked up with tilian who was an alcoholic coping with tim's death. then another girl made allegations that nobody really called out for some reason. at some point in that era he got divorced. but there isn't a clear timeline and there possibly never will.
my honest opinion: if he was a rapist, fuck him obviously. if not, he may have been a cheater, in which case also fuck him. if not, he is an alcoholic which isn't a crime but probably better for the band to continue without his involvement. on the other hand, I don't blame the band for giving him a 2nd chance. they're his friends afterall. also, don't forget to separate art from artist. you are still allowed to like music he wrote

while fanbases are not owed any sort of largescale explanation or every part of their private life...but that is for a normal band, not a band who has burnt through members like wildfire and concerning the second departure of someone who already got nuked once for some heinous allegations
i feel like if nothing else but to save face telling some objective truths here could be good if they exist in the first place which i just have trouble believing there aren't more things underneath the surface. as for the ending full agree there

Wow you are incredibly articulative, I am envious. I appreciate what Tilian made with DGD over the past 10 years nonetheless. As you mentioned, DGD is no stranger to rotating members, though considering this "rendition" of the band has been so definitive and prevalent, I in a way fear the new sound, though I'm optimistic.

as someone in a band that has parted ways with members due to "creative differences" there was one instance where creative differences meant "this dude causes way too much drama and it's nothing serious or affects anyone outside of the band so we're just not going to elaborate because both sides will end up looking petty and stupid." one instance where it was "dude wanted either most, or complete control of the writing process and it stifled the creative input of the other contributing members." and one instance of "dude just wasn't on the same page as the rest of us and we tried to make it work and couldn't, and it resulted in the complete halt of new material which was frustrating for us." all were boiled down to "creative differences". one of the dudes i'm still really good friends with to this day and i talk to him once or twice a week. love him as a person but we've agreed it just wasn't working on either side and that's all there is to it.
obviously these are all anecdotes, but if i had to guess, normally when someone has a solo project, and leaves a more successful band to focus on their smaller solo project, it's because they wanted more and more creative input. the band members would have felt stifled when they gave in, tilian would have felt stifled when they didn't. there is as you mentioned probably lingering wounds from prior events that added a bit more friction to the situation. so while i'm not going to assume to understand exactly what happened, it's safe to assume it can be narrowed down to a handful of possibilities.

For me personally, Tillian made DGD more than any other member. If he is gone for good I doubt I'll keep listening to them without Tillian.
Kinda agree. Jon is fun, love him but old old DGD sounds pretty similar to a lot of other bands from the time. This era really felt like something different

@@jcloudy8508 I did start of by saying for me personally. I started listening to DGD on the first album with Tilian and even after going through their entire discography I still prefer the Tilian era over anything else by a landslide.

Honestly I do think that while the creative differences explanation wasn’t the full story, I think that it most likely was the main reason. I think this mainly because throughout their years with Tilian, the band when from emo math rock with avantgarde to math rock with hefty pop influence. The sound over the years has changed so much and shaped itself around Tilian that given where they started off and how strained the relationship became in the final few years, I wouldn’t be surprised if the ideas and the sound just wasn’t workin for them and Tilian had other ideas for his own sound
Ughh. I listened to some DGD when jonny was the singer, but once tilian started i never missed a release. Tilian just brought the best out of this band. It will take me awhile to get used to not hearing him on DGD tracks
I love your approach to this topic, where you understand a lot of the grey areas in this situation. I'm also in the opinion where I can't have full opinion on the whole situation since this is a lot that is not answered. I feel like there is way to much arguing in a situation that doesn't really have much detail or facts to argue either side of the conversation.

Totally agree with the final take, thats what make sense to me, specially knowing that thers a lot of hate to the band after the first departure of Tilian and his comeback.
I feel bad saying this, but if this means they'll be going harder moving forward, then I'm kind of hyped.
I'm more curious on who is the new singer. From what I've heard is that it could be Andrew Wells (which would make sense) or (as a joke) Jonny Craig. I personally could see Kurt Travis making a possible comeback to the band.

As a massive DGD fan, I have spent so many hours listening to their music, so much money on their live shows and merch, I don't think that entitles me to know but it would be very gracious of them to give us a little more, yk??? Now that they released 2 singles without Tilian and Tilians (albeit mild) reaction after.. it's clear this is not a clean cut "creative differences" issue. He even said that those singles were recorded in his home studio. I just wanna know so badly.
I'd personally be hyped for Jonny or Kurt to come back. I know they are both doing their own things tho. No matter what Ik they will come back with something great.

I think Tillian returning to DGD was just to redeem himself and since fans are still supportive of the band even though Tillian has returned after the allegation, they decided that it is the right time for Tillian to step down from his role as a vocalist rather than an excuse that Tillian has been kicked due to the reason of the allegation, because we can't deny that there are fans that every once in a while brought up the issue and Tillian or even the band don't want to drag their career on the line. Then they decided to come up with a story that was due to creative differences since it is a widely used reason for every band that someone has left.
I don't really know what to think, maybe it was just time for them to move on creatively. Though now I'm left to speculate if they're going to run with Andrew as the main vocalist in the future, or pick up a new lead vocalist. I know Andrew's main focus will always be Eidola so I could definitely see them bringing someone else on.
I dont know...I love DGD. I have since 2009. I dont have any strong feelings with Tillian leaving. Im just used to DGD switching out singers. It makes the eras unique. Im curious who the new singer will be...maybe there will be a Downtown Battle Mountain 3 👀
To be honest I think it has been creative differences since Artificial Selection because I think that is the time Tillian kept leaning DGD towards the Pop aspect of things I saw an interview with Wil and Matt saying that they are more into the experimentation side of things and Tillian kinda said that he wanted to make songs more like singles which was the aim for that album. Making it sound more mainstream and pop.
I think the allegations kinda had an impact in a sense that it was easier to get rid of Tillian without the fans having some kind of back lash on the band. Cause in hindsight Tillian did more bops than other previous albums DGD had produced

I think the band probably want a lot more Andrew wells. And tillians isn’t happy to share the limelight. You can see this happening gradually in their songs.

I don’t see that. They are close friends and he’s been fine sharing with Jon for a decade. Some songs are primarily Jon…. I think he wants to make more easy listening and experiential pop music. He said he wants to focus more on solo projects so that would make sense

this is good news. Tillian always sounded like a little baby to me. He even kinda looks like a rugrats character. I hope they bring back Kurt, they did him dirty, and so did most fans at the time for being mad that he wasn't Johnny. Not his fault!

I personally do believe it was just creative differences. The recent albums are heavily influenced by tilian and I do think they want to to do something else that he doesn't. Now it's not to say events in the recent couple years haven't contributed to the outcome. Between Tim's death and tilian on some BS, it's hard.
My educated guess on the whole Dance Gavin Dance situation is that they have had a ton of issues with accountability, or lack there of, for years and years and years. Just look at how they let Johnny Craig back in the band not once, but twice. From the outside, it obviously looks like they have had a toxic culture with them for decades now that enabled all sorts of inappropriate behaviors. Mark my words: once this band finally breaks up for good, there is going to be a Vice-style exposé on them. I guarantee you.
I was about to say, they truly have a backpedal issue. With the Johnny situation and what came out about that post-him being in the band, it just reeks of weird standards. It's like they want the comfort of having a stable lineup without the accountability for their poor treatment of their members. They have any issues whatsoever, proven or not, and just abandon them immediately and cut ties and then regret it, try to fix it, then go back on that decision, too.
As for that ending I have no doubt, honestly. I think if someone really wanted to do some sort of iceberg deep dive on the lore of DGD, it'd really expose a lot of them. I adore them as a band and they're one of my favorite bands which is why I was so passionate about wanting to speak about this impartially and not jump to conclusions but this repetition is just meh. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I can't imagine I'll be the only one.

Andrew Wells in an interview on another podcast talked a lot about business and money, paying bills/putting food on the table, taking care of families, etc. He then also says their last album and tour were the highest grossing ever in the history of the band and that was immediately following Tillian's return. Sooooo, it's clear DGD fans crave Tillian and prefer him. It's clear they made the most money with him. If it's a business and the band is that concerned about finances, why would they not find a way to compromise on the material with Tillian for at least one more record and do a farewell tour and send him off that way? Imagine the revenue of "Tillian's last DGD Tour". Instead they part ways on a random Monday in April. Hmmmm. My guess is there was a power struggle and possibly Tillian wanting a bigger cut of the revenue. I do think his solo stuff was an issue as well, in the sense he may have been trying to get more of his material into the songs, but he likely has gotten his solo stuff into DGD songs over the past 12 years anyways. So again, I don't fully buy the creative differences piece.

By creative differences they may be referring to it in a moral/spiritual sense. Sure they could explore more music with Tilian but if Tilian or the band are feeling incompatibility or like people are growing apart it’s best to respect it imo.

Lineup changes are common place and vans. It’s only in the rock and metal scene that it’s noticed and called out and people actually care now of having as much lineup changes as they’ve had already in the past yeah really it’s not really anything new or surprising but you are exactly right fans don’t own their fans. Any answers as to why someone has left or anything Like they don’t owe us nothing so if they wish to keep internal problems, private that’s 100% acceptable and people who get butt hurt over that invest themselves too much into the music that they listen to for a bunch of people that don’t even know that you exist be fan by all means but don’t meet ride and get so defensive over music you didn’t help right if that makes sense

youre reaching hard here. Tillian got burnt out. Hes married. He will make enough in royalties and contractual obligations for the next 5-10 years easy. Hes also been on ESPN,MTV etc..His solo stuff...This is why metal scene is a joke. Tillian is a Soprano/Tenor that does not fit the sound at all. He made it work cause hes talented and they catered to his range. dont assume stuff like this without knowing the facts. This again is why yhe scene is beyond dead
Haha I'm not sure if you missed out on it but twice in this video I said we shouldn't make assumptions. For the sake of him and the band I hope it's just a simple answer. If it was any other project I wouldn't care as much but given what happened prior I don't think it's too much of a reach to question in our heads if anything else happened behind the scenes :]

I'd love to see Kurt come back. If I'm not wrong, he was the most put together singer that they've had. He's also my favorite one so I am admittedly biased.
I'm a big fan of Kurt and he's my favorite of the three but between Gold Necklace and Royal Coda, I think he's better off doing his own thing.
He is the most out together but has also had his fair share of issues with business practice and scamming. Which I just learned about. Seems like nobody is totally clean. But Kurt is by far the most clean.

I think Tillian simply wanted to move on and that’s okay. DGD has always had awesome vocalists since the beginning so I have no doubt that whoever they chose to do clean vocals will be great. But I personally wouldn’t want Jonny back, he was pretty toxic years back and even if he’s matured now, I always think more on the shit he did in the past instead of focusing on his vocals.

The band released a statement that said they didnt kick him out the first time and the whole situation had nothing to do with the allegations so kinda shitty for you to assume that was the reason when they said it wasnt. Imo theyd just kick him out and not make a statement about it not being about the accusations in the first place. I am just hoping so bad that they don't bring back Kurt Travis. That era of the band was the worst and would be such a huge step backwards after everything they've accomplished since mothership. Mothership and onward was the peak of their career. Hopefully they just go with new blood altogether. This is a band that needs to leave the past behind for sure. All the drama with Tilian definitely showed us one thing. When allegations turn out to be unproven and there's no justifiable reason to destroy a man's career, goddamn does that make the mob angry.

Disagree with the latter. DGD has been through many vocalists. Tilian is not the be all end all of DGD.
I mean he was the best vocalist by long shot. The first few albums minus a small handful of songs aren’t good. Major issue now is they won’t be able to easily find someone that can sing Tillians songs.
Jonny Craig was just as talented as Tilian
