How To Do Decorative Leather Inlay

  • I am doing some leather inlay on a knife sheath and I show you how I mark out the pattern and transfer it to the leather, how I cut out the inlay using a blade in a sewing machine, and how I stitch in the inlay shapes.
I take my hat off to the professional bootmakers such as Lee Miller @texas_traditions_boots whose work inspired me to have a go at this. The team there are clearly very skilled and have years of experience doing this, and would probably put me right where I make mistakes!
Anyway I enjoyed having a go in this video, and I hope you enjoy seeing me take you through the process. I was pleased with the finished result for a first effort.
    All the best
    Harry

That sharpened needle cutting hack is BEYOND BRILLIANT! Who needs a Cricut 😆
Definitely only something you want to try with a machine you actually own, though… I feel like while the folks at my job would appreciate the concept, they would prefer that I keep knives and sewing machines pretty well separate!

Harry...You do such beautiful and diverse crafting. I have learned so much from your instructional videos. They have inspired me in so many ways. Your presentation is so calming and anxiety reducing in these high stress times. I think the technique you demonstrated is actually underlaying . Inlaying would be when the leathers would be at the same level. Overlaying would be when the design leathers would be above the base leather. In any event, your craftsmanship and patience are truly inspirational. Thank you!

They make wheels for that transfer called a pounce wheel.
    It came out beautiful.

Great idea for cutting the intricate pattern out! What type & size of thread are you using and stitch length for stitch the inlays?

I transfer my designs with a spent pen. It leaves a faint impression and is easy to 'rub out' if I make a mistake. Lots less mucking around!

Transfer technique is called pouncing, same technique used by artists, Michaelangelo used it on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Very nice Harry. I wonder if you could use the same technique on thin wood verniers to do marquetry?

Dress making felt pen that erases with heat will save the paper and chalk technique.

Thanks Paul..it would be very good to feel as you could feel the stitches and the leaves of the red rose design.

Harry, I have no idea if this will work but I use the white"grout renewal"pens from pound land in the garden for slate labels. I'm wondering if daubing the pen over the holes would be better than the chalk?

Put some cloth tape on the wheel, but not shiny tape you do need the grip.

Soooo many ads. Twelve minutes of ads after one minute twenty four seconds of video. I am done with UA-cam, I think.
