Your videos are so helpful, I thought I'd give back: When gluing delicate pieces that require precision, use wax paper or a piece of clear plastic (like those binder sleeves we used to use in high school book reports) between the layers to block the portion not ready for contact. This allows you to control the contact in small increments as you pull the paper away an inch or so at a time. The wax paper or clear plastic also allows you to see what's underneath which also helps the process. Something else that helps is using the plastic as a template to block out your glue areas and protect the inlay. Hope this helps!
Really good advice at the end for leathercrafters although, it is also really good advice for any endeavor. What was the leather used and it looks like a soft temper? I have always avoided soft tempers because I fear the wallet will become misshapen too easily. That is why it is nice to have experienced leatherworkers to learn from.
Thats right. I'm new to the game, so I too appreciate watching someone who knows what they are doing and explaining how and why... Happy New Year friend!
That is so kind of you to share all your trade secrets. Open-source is the new way of thinking, where one should not be afraid of sharing technology. Thumbs up!
Right?! Thats how we as a human race have created such great things for centuries. From sharing our knowledge so it gets passed down and not forgotten.
You just gained a new subscriber today! I’ve always been super interested in leather working and you really make it simple and easy to understand. I hope to learn a lot from you!
Another well done video! The thoughts on design choices and the insights into how different materials impact both the design, build and strategy for a piece is such an awesome part of these videos. And the final wallet looks wonderful! Great job and thanks for sharing with us!!
👛 The use of nylon is more optimal for two reasons: 1. Wallet becomes thinner and lighter. 2. Nylon is more slippery and therefore resistant to constant movement of cards from pockets and back.
i love and appreciate the dialogue. especially when this channel was the reason for me getting into the hobby and buying all the tools. Thanks so much! Keep up the good work!
this came out beautiful. great video. i love the fact that you hand sew everything. it comes out so much nicer and it also gives me the confidence that i can build products without the fancy sewing machines or even a stitching pony. very awesome. thank you.
I think it would probably damage the material if he cleaned it up the stained part would require treatment and that could discolour the stained part to a different tone from rest of the print, dry cleaning material may work but hard to tell on that type of fabric on outcome and over all balance of the fading after any treatment.
I liked the tips and small talk as you worked. I totally get why you don't normally but once in a while :D thank you!. Great job as always of course and thank you for making videos at all - it helps me out a lot as I'm quite new to this. I have problems with "wonky" lines on the back side when I use a pricker on thick leather - happy to both see the fix and that I'm not just "lame".
Great video! Super informative. Learned something new today. I recently broke apart my old Burberry wallet after watching your last video. Now I'll work to give it new life! Thanks for your videos! Love it!
Hi! About the last stitch you made, if you punch the holes on the front face of the interior piece and the front face of the exterior piece, won’t the diamond shaped holes not line up? If you lay them on top of the other, one would go / while the other goes \. I hope that made sense and you can help me out. This has always been a problem for me when stitching through multiple layers. The saddle stitch ends up looking confused since the thread has to go through a change in direction while going through the holes. Much love from the Philippines! ❤️
If you place wax paper on top on the glue before you place the leather frame over it then you can line it up without sticking, then just move the wax paper down gradually as you glue it down.
Very impressive! but is there anyway that you can keep wallet thickness to the original design? I noticed that your new wallet double the thickness, making it quite bulky without anything in it. I have seen full leather wallet made in lamb skin with that nice thin wallet design, but I doubt that it can last like yours, what other material can you use to stay thin but durable?
Some brands also add plastic card stock between the outer layers of their wallets to provide more structural support. My Burberry wallet is a perfect example of this, as soon as the rolled edges began to fail the card stock was immediately visible.
Question: when your punching the holes to stitch, how do you you ensure you end up with the right number of holes spaced correctly? Do you a bunch of those punch tools with different spacing?
He planned the stitch before he punch all the way in. In the previous he talked about this, he would use a 1 tooth iron to end sure the space is not end up matching, so there would be a stitch that is a bit shorter or longer but it's not really noticable. Hope this help.
Love the work! I really appreciate that you explained in detail what you were doing and why. I love pushing my experience to new levels constantly learning is the way to go.
You could have tacked the cut out cardboard piece from the surround onto the center of the Gucci then glue around it, using it as a mask and to help center the edging. We use techniques like this in couture, just a suggestion, hope that you Don't mind.
Thanks especially your insight of the craft and the need to have skills in excess of what you deliver in order to consistently deliver good quality products.
At 20:21 you can see that the outer layer is longer than the inner so that it can close. Generally when designing what extra length do you add to the outer shell compared to the inner?
Thank you for this video. This was truly amazing. Your wallet is much better than the Gucci. I purchased four gator wallets from a company and they are very well made. I think I want to try my hand at leather craft.
You have made a great job of that wallet, it's most definitely better than Gucci's own one. I am surprised at how shoddy their materials really are, especially as they charge so much for them. I would buy yours over theirs any day.
I would say its different. If its better depends on how you want it. The Gucci one was a lot thinner and easier to carry, probably why they choose their material. Leather that thin would not last at all.
Love the narrative style of this video! Super interesting and educational, and that little opinion on skill cap is very inspiring. Keep up the good work and I for one would love to learn more from your videos :)

It's just a thought..I havent bought anything to start this hobby so if I can only use polyester I guess I can just watch you artist making these beautiful creations.....mikelle New York USA mom😷✌
Yeah Gucci and the bottom lux brands all have cheap stuff manufactured in the same plants. Look at some vids on Hermes, LV and other ateliers and you'll see hand made, properly skived/rolled/folded edges with better materials. Each piece is measured and skived for exact overall final thicknesses and every detail is finished. They are profanely overpriced but the workmanship and materials of SOME luxury brands still represents skill and craftsmanship that has been carried on for generations. There is a huge difference in goods made in ateliers versus the stuff made for Coach, Gucci etc. in CN and VN factories.
The wallet is well repaired. One or two nitpicks might be to offer colour variations of the re-made leather that blend the tones of the material and to have cleaned up the Gucci material so it's free of stains. But, other than that, I love your channel and videos. Keep it going.

Great work. Your own version of the gucci wallet looked so good that it made the actual gucci pieces look like something from a dumpster. I can't believe that people pay hundreds of dollars for a piece of nylon.
it makes me wonder if you can reinforce the fabric with a highly flexible epoxy or glue or whatnot. something that dries clear but keeps it from abrading as easily.
A burgundy leather would have been beautiful with that Gucci print
I bet this will patina nicely, though.
Oof he’s right
Omg yes

The leather frame around that Gucci canvas piece makes the wallet look more Gucci than the original one :o

I would have cleaned the fabric before. This stain bothered me a lot.
I think he worsened the stain when he is attaching leather to the fabric, probably a good idea to cover up the pattern during the glueing process.
Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on there. It looks like a thumb print or something.
I'm not sure what happened with that stain.

This is very close to how i like to craft my leather projects.
I also have a leather wallet from a local workshop. It's absolutely strong and durable, even stronger than the branded wallet that i was using before.

You could if you had enough material, you'd just have a thicker edge with the extra layer of fabric in there
