    Your video explains exactly what my project will entail. The “boxing in” gives added support north/south, east/west. Excellent video…Thank you

    Great, I just finished installing a few deck posts on my lower deck and I am happy to see I used the method you used. Very simple, clear video on how to install posts.

      Awesome! Glad you found it helpful! I was hesitant to make it because I would much rather show the actual process than do a show and tell for a completed project. But, I thought it was still worth making.
      Definitely don’t notch the bottom and mount it to the outside of the joist like they used to. That affectively just makes it a 2 x 4, eliminating the strength benefits of a 4 x 4.

    I like this system, really basic and simple. Simple enough even for my corner cutting boss get on board with. Thanks

    Thank you for this video! I’m planning my deck revision and all my posts are offset over the edge of the deck. The 4x4 posts are notched midway so they sit halfway on and halfway off the edge, bolted on the outside as they continue down. Since I want to upgrade the wood boards to composite, as well as swap all wood rails to vinyl, I was stumped as to how I’d get the sleeve over the post without it sticking over. Now I know they all have to be changed but at least I know how to go about it 👍🏻

      Glad it helped! That’s exactly what I did on this deck; I replaced the wood boards with composite and installed new posts and vinyl railings.
      I also coincidentally just posted a composite deck video a couple weeks ago. But it is a simple deck with no railings.

    Drill the countersink hole first then the long hole or the spade bid will have nothing to center on.

    Great video! I am starting the process of adding new rails to an existing deck frame and joists which is what it looks like you did. But I am having trouble getting the posts to stand straight mounting them against old warped joists. Did you encounter this at all?

    • @HowtoandReviewsOfficial
      @HowtoandReviewsOfficial  3 роки тому

      I luckily didn’t have that problem. I checked them all with a level to make sure they were all straight, and thankfully my joists were pretty much right on.
      I did have a backup plan to cut wedges and use them as shims if needed between the joist and the post, but it was not necessary.

    is there a reason why the post for the footings doesnt run straight up to form the railing post?

      The horizontal beams should sit on top of the vertical support posts. The vertical support posts can’t pass through the beams to be railing posts as well.
      Also, the support posts won’t be positioned and spaced for railing posts. Railing posts should be in the corners and around the perimeter.

    It’s still not as secure as running the post to the ground

    • @HowtoandReviewsOfficial
      @HowtoandReviewsOfficial  Рік тому

      Although uncommon, running deck railing posts to the ground is a secure option.
      The common method is to secure them to the rim joists.
