- Before the arrival of European settlers, Australia was home to more than 200 languages. Many of these have died out since, but some have now been brought back to life. Barngala is one of these. Neil and Phil discuss the revival of Barngala and teach you some useful vocabulary. 👇👇👇
❓❓❓ This week's question:
Which of these Aboriginal languages is still spoken in Australia?

My summary while listening
Some languages are endangered. We often hear about animals at risk of extinction but a recent study by the Australian National University found that out of the world's seven thousand existing languages, half are under threat. But what can be done to save languages from dying out?
According to Ghil'ad Zuckerman, a linguistic professor, he had a dictionary written by a German Lutheran Christian missionary in 1844. His name was Clamor Wilhelm Schumann and he wrote the dictionary with up to 3500 words because he wanted to Christianize "heathens" so it's topsy-turvy righting the wrong of the past by using a tool written for one goal in order to achieve the diametrically opposite goal.
Bbc En OR BBC Learning En is phantastic. I wonder if the BBC could enable all BBC learning English programmes since 1950s. Ut woul be great pace for mankind....
Hot topic nowaday: One language One world

1:32 by British Govt not Australian
Thank you, I thought exactly the same...Nice conscience washing, fortunately some of us know history!
You talk about the Australian government and his brutal laws as if it wasn't a British colonial government 🤦🏻♀️ Nice try
I absolutely agree with you!

I have a problem. I like to learn the English language well, but sometimes I stop because of boredom.
Try finding English language programmes that tie in with your interests - for example, drama if you enjoy dramas or news programmes if you are interested in what's happening in the world.
First viewer first comment 😊🎉🎉🎉🎉
Abundance of languages was a damnation from God when people began to build the Babylon tower: Genesis 11:7 "Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech."
My english is very poor
What do these languages have in common?
Recognize: I don't recognize any of them.
endangered: endangered animals, at risk of extinction.
be under threat: sb or sth is under threat from globalization/higher prices/invasive species
die out: what can be done to save languages from dying out?
what could happen if more and more languages died out?
we have to prevent rare species from dying out.
The sad truth is that it was no accident that these languages died out, given the treatment of Aboriginal people.
The sad truth is that it was no accident that the public lost trust in the government.
The sad truth is that it was no accident that teachers were desperate to leave, given the treatment of educators from parents, and politics.
Racism: Living abroad as a Chinese taught me what racism felt like.
Have you ever experienced racism?
Poverty: people are living in poverty.
Injustice: correct a historical injustice from the past
complain of, admit, remember, protest against the injustices
heathen:
ironically: Ironically, her boyfriend is a racist.
what is ironic is that he did less exercise than me.
destruction: it caused the destruction of culture and languages.
Speaking your own language is about more than communication, it means knowing your roots and feeling good about yourself.
In quotation marks.
Right the wrongs of the past.
Topsy turvy
I'm the first here
If we don't do something soon, the catalan language will be one of them. Freedom for Catalonia country.
😥
I hate grammar 😭
I'm sorry to point out that you right the wrongs of the past (or at least you cover who they really were) if you say "Australian government" talking about the early '900 and not BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
My english is very poor
My 2
it will get better with practice!
