- In this video I look at the replacement of the crankshaft oil seal on a Lycoming O-360 engine. This is often a neglected seal that is weeping oil and making a mess. Worse than that, it leaks oil onto and into the starter and alternator and can cause significant damage to these electrical components. Service Instruction 1324 C has all the required information on changing both the split and solid crankshaft oil seals.
This is tomorrow mornings job for me, having read the service instruction I can’t say I was very excited 😂 After watching your excellent video I’m now feeling much better about the whole thing! On a totally different topic, my favorite purchase this year has been my Grypmat’s! Nice to see others have found them useful.
I am very glad to hear that you found the video helpful. Good luck with the job tomorrow. Yes the Grypmat's have been fantastic and a great way to protect tools and airplane.
Having the correct tool certainly simplifies any job. Well thought out and presented video. Thank you!
-Respectively
I am glad it was helpful.
Informative video, thanks.
If prop has been dynamically balanced, Maybe consider marking flywheel to aid in reinstalling as removed.
I am glad you found it helpful. Yes marking is always a good idea and would have made for easy installation. The flywheel can only be installed in on location.
V.Good verbal instuction. Difficult to film, another person would help possibly?. I found the tool excellent on many occasions, also dropping the seal in boiling water helps make it supple for slipping around prop hub. Just keep everything clean,. A good demo. Thank you.
Yes a scond person to film would help alot I think. Especially if they were also good at editing it all afterwards!
I am glad you found it helpful.
@@fastbackflying853 Thanks FB, nice workshop BTW.. Are you in the UK?
Your videos are very helpful, and I appreciate your effort.
Grease for the crankshaft flange and seal. DC4 or something like Mobil 28 ?
I don’t know if you can edit, but next time you’re replacing one of these I would love to see a close up of hooking the metal spring.
Thanks for your efforts 👍🏻
Thanks. Next time I change one of these I will get some video of the spring at a close up position and see if that will be more helpful.
Lycoming SB gives you all the details on how to install. Basically some grease around the crankshaft to make it slippery and then you use a 737 natural cure sealant to hold the seal in.
Thank You for video! 👍👍🤝
Glad you liked it and I hope it was helpful
I need to replace the seal on my Lycoming O-360. Thanks for sharing your experience with that. What grit did you use to sand the crankshaft part where the seal squeezes in?
You can use 150 to 220 grit paper for this. Good luck.
too bad that most of the video is of you back
Yes I really need a film crew and more time.
Watching you from across the room is kinda meaningless. But when you finally got around to giving us a close-up of what you were doing, your hands are in the way. Learn to use a camera.
I am sorry you didn't find it useful. I am certainly not the best with the camera but am hopeful improving with time. I try to make some content that interests and assists people and this video was intended to educate people that there is actually a set procedure and instructions published to follow.
Thank you very much , i found exactly what i was looking for in this vidéo !
I love your “by the book approach”. I’m of the opinion that most short cuts lack the context of knowledge.
Your verbal was very good but your visual was awful
Thanks for the critique. I will endeavour to do better moving forward.
