    Very likely that cylinder did not need to come off. Lycoming Service Instruction No. 1191A specifies that a HOT ENGINE compression reading above 60 psi is airworthy and should be checked again at 1oo hours to determine trend. Another mandatory diagnostic tool is the borescope which should be used anytime a compression test is done, in fact TCM now calls for that.Compression bypassing the rings can be caused by things like ring gaps aligning , transit stuck ring, carbon on the rings / piston, that can and does correct itself just by flying. Good catch on the wrong intake valve installed by the cly overhauler but that is exactly why you only should pull a cylinder when absolutely necessary. Also the stuck ring solvent flush procedure by Mike Busch from Savvy Aviation corrected two 40 psi low cylinders on my 0-320 back into the 70s. I had stuck rings due to carbon build up. See Mike Busch's excellent book "Mike Busch On Engines", it will save all aircraft owners money, sometimes lots of it.

      Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. On our cylinder a crack was discovered. With the exception of the delay associated with the wrong valve, pretty straight forward cylinder swap.

    From an A&P/IA in the States, I'd say this was an excellent presentation of all that can be involved with cylinder removal.

    just a side note if you were to flip your locking needle nose pliers around you would have less chance of slipping just like there is a correct way to use an open-ended wrench the needle nose also has a correct direction of use.

    How about trying the solvent flush that Mike Busch describes....to loosen sludge in the rings...and maybe save the cylinder from being removed?

      Totally agree. Plus if time passes, and you get involved with another project, and then you come back to this, you have something to review.

    It's no wonder these aviation engines fail all the time. What a horrible design. And replacing only one piston at a time? There goes whatever balance the engine had.

      Perhaps you don't understand how these are built. They are designed to be able to replace only one cylinder if needed. Can you imagine replacing all 18 cylinders of an 18 cylinder radial just because one was bad???
