  • Mablethorpe M.R is a 7 1/4 gauged railway that runs around the edge of the Queens Park Putting green.
A petrol driven steam outline loco takes you through a tunnel and cuttings twice around for your ride.
It is nice to see these seaside railways still giving the children loads of fun and long may it continue.
We were very surprised to see that it opened at twelve o'clock (then it was late) on a Bank holiday Saturday, with everything else open and earning good money, the money they must have lost!
We enjoyed our time by the seaside lovely sand on the beach, well worth a visit.

If it is a diesel it should at least have a horn instead of the driver blowing a regular whistle I think he could make a lot more business if it was a real steam engine

I think your right a steam loco would be better, but this loco is a lot easier to run and cheaper to maintain ..I think the horn must have failed the day we were at the track.

We drove past this twice Chris, but as it was usually evening time, so we didn't notice it...what a shame...Loved the safety dome which had been made from a flower pot!...Regards....Bob

Not the best looking loco but it keeps the kids happy! We enjoyed our short stay in Mablethorpe,we had a great hour or so on the penny slot machines........Best wishes Chris

Have a great BHM Chris, I'm hoping to make you jealous but for the first time ever I'm at the Great Dorset Steam Fair and it's the 50th one! You're the first in my acquaintance circle who's hearing! Like I said hope you're out and about AND steam-hauled somewhere beautiful tomorrow. All the best.

Many years ago, possibly early 60's, there was a miniature line close to the railway station, with a live steam American style locomotive and toast rack coaches. The owner also had a wonderful collection of steam models in a hut on the same site. Never missed a chance to visit!

@@wooltman Relying entirely on memory, it was 10 1/2", the loco was, I think, a 2-4-2 painted maroon, broadly similar to Stapleford Park locos. Track length possibly 75 yards or so. The exhibition models covered most types of steam engines and were irresistibly fascinating to a 12 year old. Happily I managed to get my oily hands on some full size ones later!"

Many of these seaside miniature railways have sadly now closed, such a shame..But we still have some thank goodness. So when your at the seaside, use them or lose theme as they say...Regards Chris

@@wooltman I agree Chris. I've a few books on some that have gone - I rode on a fair few as a kid. I like the ride in, as opposed to, the ride on aspect of this one (using a two bogie chassis rather like a two truck Shay, as opposed to a mainline diesel).
