Tyler, I agree. I liked your original idea of expanding the playoffs to 16 teams to make sure no one has to be forced into a layoff. Then I would reseed to make sure the regular season means something because the teams who did the best would get the easiest playoff schedules. Brackets prevent that from happening and right now MLB uses brackets. The third thing I would do is make the playoffs series longer so weaker teams can't just rely on their best 2 pitchers and pretend that means they are the best team. It's not a 2 man rotation. It's a 5 or 6 man rotation. MLB used to have a 9 game world series. Now it's only 7 games, the DS is only 5 games and the wildcard is a measly 3 games. Step 1: replace brackets with reseeding like the NFL does. Step 2: make sure no team ever has to have a bye-round. Step 3: make the playoff rounds longer so the best overall team isn't going to get beat by another team that only has 2 good starting pitchers.
Those are fantastic ideas!! I do agree, something has got to change! A 5 day layoff is ridiculous! No MLB team has that long of a time without seeing a 99 mph fastball and a curve ball that breaks 18" since...well, before Spring Training starts! THE OFF SEASON!

This format was intended to benefit the best teams. I'd rather have a wild card series of one and done (as before) on tuesday, on wednesday all teams start a best of 7 and all the following rounds a best of 9 series.
I agree with everything you've stated except the first sentence. Maybe their intentions were to benefit the best teams, but I don't see how anyone could think that. The winner of the wildcard series plays in a best of 5 division series. The first team to win 3 games moves on. Where's the advantage for the best teams? Add the days off within the division series and the advantage most certainly isn't there.

I rather have all teams playing in the wild card, but only the winner of 1 vs 6 matchup gets the bye. While the winners of 2 vs 5 matchup and 3 vs 4 matchup play each other until one will move on to play the winner of 1 vs 6 matchup.
Met fan here. I was very critical of the new format when it was first implemented because I thought the wild card series was too short for baseball. I have no prolem with the bye if they change the division series to 7 games. The longer format will help solving the rust problem. I suggest they cut regular season to 150 games and make the playoffs longer. I don't agree with you regarding phillies are the better team than the Mets. The Mets have the best record in baseball since June 1st. That's 4 months of sample size. So I think actully the better team won the series.
They played a shitty royals team that has nowhere near the level of superstars or talent like any of the NL wild card teams past 3 years (aside form the shitty dbacks who should have never been in)
