Growing up in FL I have different memories of KW in the 70's & 80's compared to KW post JB. I remember first being introduced to Jimmy's music, "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean", then when "Living and Dying in 3/4 Time" came out I was hooked. California had the Beach Boys but I just couldn't relate to their music. As his music grew in popularity so did the dream of the Key West life style. The KW I knew and loved was pushed out by $$$. I have walked the streets, visited the bars & places you shared, Thank You. Too many killed brain cells but such fond memories.

A lot of information I did not know. Thank you so much. Seeing Jimmy Buffett perform live in concert was on my bucket list and I had planned to see him last summer. Unfortunately, things did not work out for either Gym or myself. He is sorely missed. But when I do get to Key West,which hopefully won’t be too far off in the future, I will definitely be visiting all of these places. Thank you.

Like a lot of 60's - 70's history, those of us that were there don't all have the same memories and those who claim to remember it all weren't really there :-) Watching the video series "Songs You Don't Know By Heart" with Jimmy proves that, even he doesn't remember everything about his own experiences, but that's life. I was in Key West in the early 70's, my last visit was Sept of 1976 and it was a tourist spot then with plenty of T-shirt shops, it was just not expensive and the upscale big money town I hear that it is now. It had a sister-city relationship with Provincetown on Cape Cod and lots of the same artists, writers, drifters, smugglers and beach-bums spent time living in both, including Tennessee Williams and "Old Joe Bones" (a musician mentioned in My Head Hurts...") who lived in Provincetown up until his death last year. The schooner Hindu also spent half the year in each port for the past 60 years or so and wound up on the solid there for a couple years. Like so many other places that once attracted the creative, bohemian non-conformists with a character and atmosphere that nurtured and inspired - the money moves in and the things and people that attracted us there are pushed out. It's nice to see some of these spots in your videos and cool that you've researched what can be found from those years, thanks for making these and sharing, but as the saying goes - We can never go home again.

OK, Just finished Part 2. Again excellent video, every Parrothead should watch. As for The Green Parrot. I'm sure Jimmy had to have gone there at some point. Everyone does. That you for the great tribute to Captain Tony. As for the Chart Room. First time I went there was early afternoon. At first I was the only person there. The bartender told me many stories besides those about Jimmy. The first still photo you showed, I was on the second bar stool from the door. Great job.

I know it well, Stationed at Boca Chica 73-77, did the circuit and hung at The Anchor and The Boca Chica on Stock Island. I think he(Jimmy) still owes me a drink.

I knew he got his start there, but did not realize he lived there for so many years. I live in Minnesota, and am a huge fan of his music. I have it on my bucket list to travel to Key West one day and visit Capt. Tony's. Now I will add a few other destinations on that visit! I liked and subscribed - thank you for your great work!

Floy V. Thompson played the role of the landlord in his early video on Waddell Street. She was very well connected on the Island and had befriended Jimmy in his early days. When she passed in 1994, it coincided with a break on his summer tour, and being very loyal to his old KW friends, he came to her funeral. She is one of two people dedicated Barometer Soup album to. I was living in Key West at the time and saw him then. There are a few articles on the internet about her, and there are scholarships for students with her name.

Jimmy's life story keeps on writing itself. His latest endeavor is an appearance on the hit series "Blue Bloods". Additionally, he maintains a tour schedule and still manages to squeeze in the occasional self-piloted flight or surf session. Jimmy takes every breath God gives him for what it's worth. I'll drink to that.

Fort Lauderdale native here. My pops traveled down to Key West in the mid-sixties and throughout the seventies. My first trip with him to Key West was as a kid in 1975. Returned in 1980 and several times beyond count between 1984 and 1992. Then returned again in 1999 and 2002. Many changes. I actually like what it has become, even though it is tourist-centered now.

Rick, thanks for watching! You are correct, the phone booth was around the back end of the bar in what is now the open air hallway of the Pier House. Scott Atwell, author of Buffett Backstories has a short video documenting this (it came out after my vlog).
The picture is widely available online and identified as Phil. More importantly, the picture is in Tom Corcoran’s book: Jimmy Buffett the Key West Years. Corcoran was a bartender at the chart room and close long time personal friend of JB (and knew Phil personally). In other words he had first hand knowledge. But like I said, if someone has additional information please let me know! I greatly appreciate your help, thanks!
I thought he said they were at the Islander on Boca Chica Key?
The Islander was on Stock Island. Boca Chica is the next key to the north, I’m not sure why it has been identified as the old site but it was not. Similarly, the Boca Chica Lounge (another JB hangout) was located on Stock Island too.

We tried to find a JB tour but weren't able to find anything (pre smart phone). Now I find out we stayed in the same hotel where he lived! Amazing! Lol!

Jimmy said, while introducing Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit in Atlanta for what would appear on YOU HAD TO BE THERE, "the Islander Drive-In Theatre on Boca Chica Key outside of Key West, and pulled up to the front row, watched a movie called PAYDAY..." perhaps the cheap Gilby's gin worked better than he thought to get his geography wrong.
Or maybe saying Stock Island just didn't fit right.
Boca Chica is the island directly north of Stock Island. No idea why he would say Boca for the Islander - other than the two names may have been interchangeable. For example the Boca Chica Bar that JB and crew frequented was also on Stock Island. But the Islander was on Stock Island. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Enjoyed your tour of these sites and the narrative was solid. I would suggest maybe walking around and stepping back from these locations a little more when taking videos to get a better perspective. On some of the tour spots you did that others not so much. Another thought would be to prepare a small POI map showing broadly where these sites are in relation to one another.

Thank you. My husband & I stayed at Pier House for our honeymoon. One long bar hopping day on bikes, we get back to Pier House. I couldn’t make it very far without throwing up in the bushes of Chart Room. My husband said, people were looking out the window with a gross look on their faces. I’m sure I wasn’t the first or the last. Funny memory though. We went to KW because we are such big parrotheads. 🦜 Fins Up! ♥️
