Absolutely superb video. I love how you played different songs to the styles that were meant for their core song, brilliantly done Woody.
thanks!! one of my techniques to avoid sounding *too* cheezy!
I agree!
Dear Woody, it is a joy to see you having so much fun. Many thanks and encouragement from Mick.
Woody does a fine job of taking you through this new keyboard and explaining its features. I appreciate his effort and knowledge and his demos truly show off the instrument.
Thank you so much for your beautiful demonstration, Wonderful keyboard, you are very interesting and love your playing.Kind regards.
These instruments blow my mind thinking about what they were like in the 90's.
Woody, thank you so much for demonstrating this absolutely fantastic keyboard so masterfully played by a phenominal keyboardist.
Your grin says everything. So glad to see you having fun. ❤
Great video nicely done.😊
Great keyboard, great demo. Thanks a lot, Woody!
Loved the video the country music Depeche Mode was hilarious
You would almost dancing & playing simultaneously 👌with pleasure, and I have this marvellous keyboard, very satisfied 👍
oh wow, already!! congrats and enjoy :)
Amazing review, top notch videos!
Sounds excellent you play so perfectly well. I’m sure your audience including myself would LOVE to hear the new improved vocoder/vocal harmoniser.
Great video, great keyboard. I recently set up my PSR 500 again which I got for my 14th birthday in 1993. I think it is actually quite impressive what it was able to do at that time and for the price point. Hey, perhaps you could do a video on iconic old machines. ;)
thank you, and yes, it would be fun to revisit some vintage arrangers. i started with roland ra50 in the late 80s!
Small world, I had a PSR-500 back then too.
@@WoodyPianoShack Reminds me of my Roland Pro-E way back in the last century 😂 btw: you really bring a smile to my face with your videos. Really refreshing.
21:50 This song is called "All that he wants is another Popcorn" 🤣🤣🤣😉
Keep on having so much fun!
Sounds great, well played!
Excellent demo and information. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you for the time and effort you put this video🎹🎶
I've been watching your videos for years. Please don't get me wrong with my following text, you are way beyond my playing ability. I love how you convey so much enthusiasm. At the same time, I notice that your hand sometimes shakes nervously when you play. That makes you very likeable and incredibly real. We all want to give our best in front of an audience and a little excitement is naturally part of that. Demos by players who are virtuosos on their instruments without ever making a creative slip-up intimidate me straight away. It's different with you, I can just about empathise with the quality of your playing and I'm not totally frustrated.
thank you for all the kind words and for sticking around for so many years. yeah, have shaky hands but nothing to do with nerves, just old age i guess :) but you are right about a few slipups here and htere!
Thank you for the demo!
I would like to hear the vocal harmonizer. I used the vocal harmonizer on Tyros2, Tyros5 and SX900. I like the Psr 8000 best.
Hello Woody! Great video! Cheers from Poland!
Great demo. Im still holding on to my PSR-S775 as it still does what I need for my wedding gigs
yeah, those older models still getting the job done, no doubt!
I must say I’m very impressed with the sound, more articulation + and articulation 2 sounds would of course always be desirable but all in all a super cool arranger keyboard ❤
Hello Woody, besides the fact that you play great on the keyboard, you are also very cool, I never get tired of hearing your voice,👍Ali from Germany.
i never considered myself as particularly cool so loving that, thanks!
Winning keyboard! Winning smile 😊!
8:30 Mary's Prayer!!! Awesome 😎
Thanks, that smart chord, maybe some advice for newbie users?
Depeche country !! Interesting you have fun with these bandinabox keyboards .. yet you hang on to the Nord to join a band .. the question is which is more fun ??
i see pros and cons to both, can't quite decide. maybe gigging with a vocalist/guitarist and the psr would be best of all worlds.
Another great vid Woody, now you got me undecided between the SX720 and the SX920. Watching and listening to you I want the 920, which way should I go? Forgetting the $$$$$$. Do you think there is enough difference to justify spending the extra $$. Thanks again for taking the time to do this demo for us Don
tough to say, see my recent video "buy the best you can afford" breaking down the costs of ownership.
Hey Woody can i ask your advice , I have korg triton extreme and flight case , i am tired of how heavy it all is . I was considering selling and buying a korg krome and bag instead .... What are your thoughts on this ? Would it be a downgrade ? I have heard krome keybed action is bad , but i am tempted by light weight , nice screen , nice sounds .... Mainly a guitarist , playing keys only few years , forgive my ignorance !
Great demo!
You've always been a superb player, but ... have you gotten even better? Been doing any new theory learning, or something?
I feel like I was extra amazed by your performances in this video!
haha. that's pretty funny and encouraging to read. no, nothing in particular, although i do (when not filming, prepping or editing vids) try and spend an hour pracitstinc random stuff at the piano!
I really loved the way you take known songs and make them your own version, wouldn't mind some more of this. also, that childish smile :)
The instrument is really good. I can't really afford the Genos so maybe this one will get an OK from the partner..?
go for it, and thanks for the nice comment. if genos is your dream, then maybe hunt around a bit for G1, which is still the superior instrument most would agree.
Forgot to ask you Woody, are these sounds as they come in the keyboard or have you enhanced anything? Thank you.
Being a film maker myself, I notice that you are great at filming - very good lighting and quality. And you put a lot of effort in setting up camera perspectives for what you want to show. Very nice! One improvement though would be to use manual focus for the close-up shots of the keyboard, so it stays in focus. You got a lot of focus hunting between the keyboard and your hand. It's also very noticable since you seem to use a photo lens for filming, so there is noticable unwanted change in focal lenth while focusing (looks like zooming). Parfocal lenses for filmmaking don't show this unwanted behaviour, but they're expensive. As long as you don't rely on autofocus, your current lens is fine of course.
thanks for all the great feedback and compliments. i'm glad you noticed. i take your point on the AF, but in practice, manually focusing between every shot reposition would take too much time, and danger of me getting it wrong and completely losing the focus. i am using AF and setting focus lock on the panel, but as you say the hand messes it up which is pretty stupid of the camera!
@@WoodyPianoShack One possible workaround could be to use autofocus, but once it has locked onto the panel turn autofocus off - the focus point the camera has chosen should then stay in place. This works with most cameras. So the camera does all the focusing work for you, and it won't be irritated by the hand. I use this method a lot (professional cameras even have a button for this). Just don't forget to turn autofocus on again for the next shot; you proably have a AF switch on the lens or the camera to quickly do this (not sure which camera and lens you use).
BTW love the presentation of the keyboard, well done. Have had my SX920 for 10 days now.
@@valuemastery thanks again and good suggestion, but I know from experience I will inevitably forget to reactive AF or adjust focus, losing the entire shot, so in my case better with a bit of focus hunting when my hand gets in the way! congrats on your sx920 and enjoy :)
thank you for the review; kindly review the VH with a female singer or your voice either way we would really appreciate it
I love your enthusiasm ❤ . Not sure about that thing for me 😂
Ohh!!!!.... FLETCH IS SMILING HI RIGHT NOW!!!!! BRILLIANT!!!😎
Nice played Woody, I like the song you played at 23:15 to 24:26, unfortunately I don't know the name of the song. You're a good keyboard player. I really enjoyed your videos. I've SX 900, I'm practicing alot to play just like you.
i refuse to rewatch my published vids, after spending so much time editing and watching myself, it's a case of never again! somebody else will chime-in I am sure ::)
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Lodi
My telly was on mute when this started, and what sweet cringe it was to watch - I haven't laughed so hard in months! 😅
And just in case anyone's appalled indignation gets too worked up, the key word there is _watch_ 😉
I would like to see how can you arrange music with it. From beginning to end. Not just using predefined styles, but create accompaniment and melody or main theme.
Thanks woody. Is this keyboard to be about 2 grand in £'s ??
yep
I came to know that there is some sustain fadeout issue while trying to off the sustain button/pedal on hold. Will it be resolved by a firmware update?. I was planning to buy one, but now i am sceptical
no issues encountered by me in my casual playing so far, so i would not worry about that.
The style dynamics are a bit more than just velocity (which would be just volume), but the depth of sound (from those many samples of each instrument) is adjusted. Not sure how much use the smart chords are, but I guess useful on a 61 key format instrument, so you can shift the left/right split down to give more right hand space. You noted the Genos 2 wasn't very good with seamless transitions, but haven't commented on it for the SX920 - is it the same? You seem a lot more upbeat about the SX920 than you were about the Genos 2 - I'm not sure if you expected more from the Genos 2?
no sst here either! i feel at the price of the genos2 we can have much higher expectations... so prepared to give the sx a pass. although i have not shared any opinions yet, this was more of an informational demo, review to come!
@@WoodyPianoShack in which case, the "baby Genos" moniker is likely to really stick to the SX920. In saying that, it comes too late for me to have any real interest as I decided to upgrade from the EW400 I'd been playing for 6 years, bypass the SX700/900, and jump straight to the G2 - a move I don't regret - other keyboards might do some things better, but I was already invested in the Yamaha ecosystem, so it made sense to me. Also because of the 76 key format (going back to 61 keys would have been annoying, even if I tried to fool myself that it would be okay). Anyway, the SX920 is a welcome refresh to the range for those that don't own a forklift truck to transport a G2 to gigs (so heavy - possibly my major complaint about the G2)
got mine too : )
wow, that was quick, lucky you!
Have had mine now for 10 days. Had a one-time opportunity for a great deal - 920 for the price of a 720 - so I didn't think even a second about it.
Can you make a video on how these keyboards are actually controlled? I see you are mostly playing the solos, but how does what you are playing influence the arrangement? (It seems the instrument is basically playing "itself", something I find very confusing).
yeah, i understand it can look confusing, and that's a good idea
@@WoodyPianoShack Yes what I can't figure out is what to play myself, and what to leave to the instrument, if that makes sense.. (I do not own one of these, so I have not been able to "figure it out by myself".)
Great demo, Woody! Curious as to which Fingering mode do you use? Do you keep the default split point? Thanks, Jerry
hi and thanks, split point i find i need to adjust depending on the song, then save as registration. been using "fingered bass" previously, but the yamaha demo guys convinced me to switch to left hand AI mode, don't recall the exact name. takes some practice but opens up lots of possibilities.
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for the quick reply, I've been using "Fingered on Bass" mode, and have struggled with "AI Fingered" mode. It changes the chord with almost every Melody note. I must be doing something wrong, but sounds like a good topic for another video.
@@JerryKolata Actually the "AI full keyboard" (or "full keyboard") mode is changing the chords while you are playing the melody.
The "Fingered on bass" mode is always using the lower note that you are playing with your left hand as the bass note of the chord.
The "AI fingered" mode on the other hand, doesn't use the lower note that you are playing as the bass note, but instead it is using as bass note the root note of the chord so it sounds more let's say a "steady" chord.
This is also very useful for players (like myself) that we use inversions of the chords and this way for most of the chords we usually need just one octave and except from some "weird" chords, we don't really need to change the default split point.
I have a really bad left hand so this way it helps me not to make big movements around the left keybed.
You can always record your playing(as a midi) and then watch on your screen what notes every part of the style is actually playing while you are changing the chords in a different mode.
Still waiting for mine to arrive, please can you demo acoustic and rock guitars
you are in luck, we do a few! congrats on yours :)
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought I heard that this works with software to export your recording to a score. If not, what external software does one need to create new styles?
there is some midi-2-style software available from yamaha. many daws will display midi data recorded from the psr as a score. in fact i think it can be done on the instrument itself and displayed on screen but probably quite primitive.
How does Super Articulation+ differ from MegaVoices? It seems like maybe the same technology but designed for keyboard players rather than MIDI data writers?
i think you maybe summed it up very well yourself there,
Life is tasteless without a passion.
Sorry out of my budget, but that does not mean I do not want one 😅
Now hopefully the prices for the PSR - S series and the previous SX will go down . So I can hopefully buy either one of the keyboards.
Same here. If I have the money. I would get it.
It's better to get a 900 or 700 it has the same fiters and and they look the same at a much lower price
Is the keybed same as sx900? How different or same is the keybed? I guess its the same. Please let me know.
must be same, otherwise yamaha would have said it was upgraded or improved.
It's the same old hardware with some new sounds...?
yeah, I think same hardware, new sounds and features.
Is it worth upgrading from the SX900? 🤔
i can't say it it is worth it FOR YOU!!! but hope the vid helps you to decide. also could consider an upgrade to used genos1 as an option.
As i the sounds of super articulation 2 sounds hear white the sax its the same on the korg PA 700, 1000 and 4X keyboards
also the assignable knops for the effects, the PA700 has more sounds than the 920 and sounds great and kost less,, the PA 1000 has aftertouch
and the 1 finger accord you can fined on different keyboards also on the korg PA and more, but the 920 sounds oke and great styles too ........
The one person band market:
Genos2 = full time pro singer/musician?
SX920 = part time singer/musician?
Genos2 = hobbyist who can afford it?
Yes, those registration are VERY powerful for custom designing your styles without any technical programing, simply mute or adjust mixer settings and save as another similar style, then save the similar style in a registration for smooth, no glitch, ready to go style changes across the 8 registration pads. This gives you access to many more variations of the same style, you can have 4 very simple bass variations, then switch registrations to a base, and drums 4 variation...and so on...
Very strange we have gotten to this level in arrangers but still including speakers that can't compete with a good value near field monitor like the JBL305P. Remove the speakers and add tone editing controls, and physical sliders for the 8 channels of style and 4 channels of live play. Articulation buttons, would prefer 4 pedal inputs for this and other modulations. You have played and heard both, from your videos I am hearing the Genos2 quality of effects and the end output of mastering effects/EQ much superior? Maybe better output stage preamps and DAC as well? I assume you heard a sound quality difference, but not really related to the sample/patches if heard dry in comparison?
Suggestions: I would like to hear a dry, no effects at all, no master end effects 100% dry comparison between the Genos2 and 920 with just the best sax (super whatever) in solo play no styles. IF you still have the Genos2?
Hejsan jag har beställt en sx700 min fråga till dig hur mycket tror du jag förlorar på att köra en 700 istället för en 720 ?fick den princip 3000spänn billigare en 720in och det är en uppgradering från min PSR s750
i would not worry about the differences, now you have made your choice, just enjoy it for what it is! there will always be better and newer models, just learn to get best out of what you have, 700 is still great :)
Does it half bar eg 2/4 function?
that rings a bell, but not sure, maybe someone will chime in
2.500 € - (still) no aftertouch and no usb audio interface ( even a mx has one😮) so i hope that korg will bring up a new midclass arranger... Probably when i'm 64😢
First instrument with SA2-voices was Tyros3 in 2009.😉 14:15
indeed yes, and this is first time on a non-flagship PSR!
Okay Woody, a suggestion. See if Korg will send you a PA1000 and do a comparison between the SX920 and the PA1000. Since the PA1000 is a couple of years old (it's the 'baby brother of the PA4X) the SX-920 should be better. The price here in the U.S. for the PA1000 is a couple of hundred dollars more. I'd like to see both of them together.
Oh yeah, Genos 2, PA5X, SX-920, DGX-670 . . . are you ready to go 'One-Man Band' for playing out? LOL!!!!
Hi gary, thanks for the suggest... the PA is more than a few years old I think...? in that case, maybe not such a hot topic to make a video about tbh, might be a lot of work for little interest?
@@WoodyPianoShack I will grant you that it's just over seven years old, being released on September 1, 2017. However, it is still active in Korg's line up and basically holds the same place as the SX-920 in the line ups. The Genos 2, being the top of the line for Yamaha only has a 76 key version, whereas the PA5X, as you are aware, has 61, 76, and 88 key versions. But, as you move down the line, the next keyboards are the SX-920 and the PA1000, respectively for Yamaha and Korg.
As to 'little interest', that might be true, but both keyboards are under $3,000 USD versus closer to $5,000 for the top of the line keyboards.
Anyway, it was a suggestion, and if you don't feel it's worth it, I understand.
What disappoints me is that the PSR SX-920 should have an aftertouch-capable keyboard, a digital audio output and 256-voice polyphony for this price.
yeah, i concur with that at this price point
I have a weakness for anything yamaha. Own a montage.😀
@@TheLawapa99 me too. It’s a weapon!
ok woody, here's a challange ,, make your own style in the style creator (lol)
You should just be playing these covers in a wine bar somewhere
verry old school arranger (onemanband) playing i love it ......but i'm into my fifties now and heard and played enough of this -- (good)shit, always the same kind of repertoire/styles. Now realistic piano/e-piano/organ/Synth on a stagepiano-combo (Studiologiccompact NX2) and some simple step sequencer drum and bass to greate More acoustic and real-playing.... love to test the new juno D6/7/8... (ticking al the boxes i need) Statement: A arranger keyboard is nice but let say its playing with the band in box leading!!! And not the band is playing with you!!
Got mine 920 and 720 already :)
cool! you all need to sub to this channel ↑↑↑
You got both?!
@@cinepost yes. I have a music school and will create some small UA-cam Videos as well.
@@Aikkiang the Sx900 to SX920 demo showed an obvious improvement!
@@cinepost it’s really hard to compare everything since they updated everything. Under the hood, it is now a Genos 1. But there’s also content from the Genos 2. All the one touch settings are reminding me on my Genos 2. Of course it is still not a top model. And there will be a lot more content coming with the Yamaha expansion Explorer and an arranger workstation is about content so this is really a huge generation. This is the main reason why I would choose one of the newer keyboards instead of buying an old one. You could also think buying a secondhand Genos 1. But there is a lot of stuff to sweeten the deal to get a SX 920 instead.
22:01 detta va inte popcorn, detta va ace of base - all that she want hehe men visst det du spelade funkar åxå haha
Yamaha need to upgrade 73 or 76 keys
they call it genos2 ;)
Top tip: when it is time to return the SX920 to Yamaha, slip in your SX900 and see if anyone spots it. You could just say it was a genuine mistake if they do! 🤣
will definitely consider that!
Looks like fun but, not for pro users…
Perhaps one man band in local Pub…
lol what you mean with pro user? its for one man band this one and it also can be used for a pro user woody is pro user but how much are your prepair to pay for a keyboard? 5000euro for the flagship genos2 or did you stay on synth maby roland fantom or yamaha montage i dont know but to say noob synth on this is to say all are noobs. i have tryed them all and i dont like to create my own patterns you can record patterns on this one to... you can create your own voices but its harder when you dont have slides
Thank you woody for your amazing content video. I think you are most the influencer man for Yamaha in UA-cam. I love this sx-920 arranger andI bought from sweet water in united states. That have amazing capabilities with awesome price. I think that’s best arranger that Yamaha released in history with that price point with Yamaha expansion manager on phone capability that you can add expansion sounds from Yamaha app on phone from many countries and install on your Yamaha . That’s game changer technology that Yamaha brings in arranger so you can download and install. You don’t have this cloud local expansion sounds technology installation in any brands in world and this expansion sounds on cloud of Yamaha is expanding everyday.I don’t know why middle class like sx-920 has 3 features like super articulation plus and some new styles and A-5000 expansion pack available for that all that features are not even available in genos 2 . So what’s point of flagship genos 2 here? What kinda policy Yamaha do with this middle class will break records of capability with very good price make most valuable arranger keyboard in world now.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️✌️✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
