JUST IN TIME! This year at my majority white high school (the entire district is 88% white) Me and a couple of my friends created a black empowerment club (even with tons of backlash from staff and students of all races we are still going strong!) and every year we are supposedly supposed to have a black history month assembly and it always happens to be canceled and last year they even tried to reschedule it for April last year smh (but of-course it never happened) and my freshman year was the only time we had one which was more of a Michael Jackson tribute they brought out a terrible look alike who could barely dance it was too disrespectful and they had all the white students wear black t-shirts for the assembly it was terrible! But this year we have asked to take it over so hat we can make sure it actually happens and is done right without repeating MLK and Rosa Parks a million times, don't get me wrong I respect them but this is not "civil rights rememberance month" it's BLACK History month so we are trying to do many cool things such as a "soul train themed evolution of black dance" and even starting out the assembly with a Morgan freeman cup that says black history month shouldn't exist like how many people who are attending feel and we rebuttal that with a response and the entire assembly and we are planning to do a Black lives matter tribute despite people warning us that we shouldn't do it. Sorry for this long comment are assembly is on Friday and I hope it turns out amazing.

lol sorry guys, black people didnt invent peanut buttter, and theres a much deeper stain on africa for enslaving and selling tens of thousands more of its own people than were sold to even the colonists, mostly to the middle east where the slaves lineage would stop because unlike white colonist, slave owners in the middle east castrated their slaves instead of freeing them and letting their descends become part of the country with the highest standard of living in the world

I went to an all black elementary school. None of us knew many white people at all, so when I learned about slavery, my initial reaction was, "Hey! Why don't we enslave the white people?!" and I feel like there was a general consensus. Like we all agreed it was a pretty good idea. Lmao.

    • @MrKgBizzle
      @MrKgBizzle 6 років тому +1

Tiye Stephens I was 50% of the white population in my school. For those who can't do math that means I was 1 of 2. I had no problem with anyone until race came up by the teachers or the racism of the kids parents. The more we address the things of the past the more we are doomed to repeat it. We need to stop victimization of skin color and start moving forward together. Remember that the slaves in Africa were sold to the Europeans by the African people. It doesn't make it right, but then you have to tell it how it was if you open that can of worms. I don't see anything about that nowadays.

My high school was predominantly Hispanic and Black and then I got to college which is like 60% white so its actually really weird to be surrounded by so many other white people now. I don't think any of my friends had to get up and talk about slavery in front of the class because they were black (since there was a lot of black kids there) but I know they had to deal with bullshit about the US needing a White history month and similar issues you mentioned.

Ganthore....I have never heard someone demand worship during Black History Month....I question whether or not you actually heard this, and speculate that you are just exaggerating the mere thought of having to consider that other races of people exist and they also have history that can be learned about.....

    • @avalimpa
      @avalimpa 7 років тому +1

@ganthore If there was no black history month, would the accomplishments of black people be taught? Would black history be taught? A white teacher taught about Native American history for about 2 weeks and complained that she was tired of native American history. It's hard to see things from a nonwhite perspective, but actually white history is all year long every single year, not just one month. Even in British colonies European history was the mandated subject.

Very glad that you touched on the depression that comes with hearing the constant unnecessary back lash. I went to an all "black" school most of my life so never dealt with much of that until college and post college. Behind the fight to not be targeted is often times sadness. It can be overwhelming. But as you stated, acceptance is key. Not always easy but necessary to move through this insanity.

3 years late but I hope someone sees this and helps a girl out. :(
I'm the ONLY BLACK MUSLIM GIRL in my medical class of 280 students and at first I didn't think the stares and the dumb questions would continue for so long and start to bother me.
I decided to grow thick skin but that was a whole facade. Everyone in my family back home in Kenya is rooting for me so I decided to brush off the petty behavior off but it slowly started to eat away at me and to this point it still does.
I ask myself twice why I'd no one would sit with me in the canteen, bus, lecture halls but only ask me stereotypical black questions.
(It was raining and I didn't want the ends of my trousers to get wet so I rolled them up and one guy asked me "Is it true you don't feel cold because Africans absorb the sun heat ?")
I wish I watched this video when it first came out, I don't want little comments and gestures to ruin the momentum that I have built for myself.
    But am only human.

The sad thing is, it won't be much different if you go to a PWI. I can't speak for all PWI's but a lot of them (including mine) pride themselves on diversity, when in reality there is not that much minorities. In all my classes, I'm the only minority and African American. I'm constantly the spokes person for my raise and I constantly feel the eyes of my professors and peers when someone brings up a racial issue. People will still be ignorant with their ideas and beliefs. It sucks but that's the reality for a lot of institutions.

This reminded me of what I dealt with going to a predominantly white school. I dreaded english and history class during black history month. People would stare and say the most awkward things. One day during history class, my teacher started discussing slavery. The girl sitting in front of me turned around said, "OMG if we lived back then I'd never put you to work in the fields. You could've been one of my house slaves."😲 She said that with a huge smile on her face like that was supposed to comfort me. I was so shocked I didn't know how to respond.

They play lots of hip hop and R&B in the dining halls during the month of February and put up posters of Rosa Parks and MLK. Most of the black students avoid the dining halls during back history month.

She is the best example of "its not your race, its you"!
Her being black has nothing to do with her treatment. Its the fact that shes a know it all marry sue that makes people uncomfortable! People don't like it when others make them feel bad.....
So she maintains her victim ego and calls everyone racist for not validating her as some genius.

5 stages of being white during BHM:
    1) Embarassment (and Rage!)
    2) Not being able to get past 1
    3) Buying food colouring (or optional, shoepolish)
    4) Turning to religion because God doesn't care about colour
    5) Though finding some peace in 4, now and again regressing back to 1

There is Irish History Month and an Italian History month. These history months are mainly created for groups that were historically oppressed and are currently marginalized in today's society and excluded from USA History education. White history is not exactly excluded in USA society.

totally agree with this! even though im so white i glow in the dark we had 1 half black girl in school, heck 1 black family in the whole town and everything would get all weird in feb, more so then it was normally. my family is the only one who would look around and be like why?!? learn something appreciate what you are learning and cont constantly look over at the girl making her feel uncomfortable. I did have some pretty awesome teachers that taught us sooooo much more then just the stupid text books. actually what I learned from black history month never came from text books the teacher got their own information and stuff a lot more graphic and detailed then the school books. still remember my first black history month i hated what my skin represented, the hate and damage it caused the fear oppression and damage that never went away.

Funny to hear how you can feel about it in the US. In France mainland, well how can I say... There's no such thing as black history month and I learned by myself what slavery was 'cause at school it takes 1h to "say it all".

I’m guessing this video is gonna be about, “shit happened that isn’t actually racist, but here is why they are in my mind, and this is why your freedome needs to be infringed upon so that I don’t have to be bothered by the bullshit I just made up” let’s see if I’m right.
Hey I was wrong, it was a “shit that never happened, and here is why this made up shit bothers me”

My son is 1 of 3 black kids at his Jr high and there's no Black History Month anything going on. Makes me so mad. Now I have to teach my son about black history myself, knowing damn well I only half remember what I was taught during BHM when I was in school. Public schools have failed me on so many levels.

I was the only black girl in my class in 5th grade and I was pretty depressed all year, i didnt make any friends until the 3rd quarter. (This was a new school) The white people would ask if I washed my hair and if I knew who my father was. They asked if I could teach them how to twerk and laughed and left. During February my teacher asked me to read a paragraph from our scholastic, and two white girls had their hands raised as well. A white boy in my class yelled out and said to those girls "She wasn't picked because she's smart it's because she's black." And some people laughed and others nodded.
    I cried.
    I hated school.
And I was just another angry black girl to them.

"the voice of her people" What people is that? There's about 120 or so different peoples just in Africa ranging from nearly paper white to midnight black. Color is not culture; it is an accident of birth.
Which one do you presume to speak for? All of them? Not much variety or independent thinking?
But there's the problem of the Hutus and the Tutsis. They are enemy to each other; you cannot very well speak for both of them at the same time. Zulu; Masai; Kara, Dinka, Nubian, Ethiopian. All alike? I don't think so.
