  • GISELLE, 1841, with Carla Fracci as Carlotta Grisi and Vladimir Vasiliev as Lucien Petipa.
In 1987 a two-part television programme called The Ballerinas featured Carla Fracci, with some of the top male dancers of the period, in a series of reconstructions putting various ballets and their interpretors in an historical context. Fracci was an amazingly youthful 51 when she danced these extracts.

Two legends in signature roles. By no means a wispy dancer, Carla gives the impression of floating. Her strength and grace are remarkable. Those wafting arms are magnificent. Before Mikhail, there was Vladimir. His cabriolets and pirouettes would use gasps of awe today.

First of all, _Vasiliev is about 47 years old here,_ and I don’t believe I’ve seen many danseurs dance like this over 45, and that includes Baryshnikov. Many dance experts put Vasiliev ahead of Baryshnikov and Nureyev, and I have to agree. His versatility, height of his jumps, extension, grace with incredible athleticism and mostly his acting make him very difficult to top. And he is the danseur who raised the bar so high for the role of Basilio, as we know it today....he was doing that in the ‘60s! Neither Baryshnikov or Nureyev ever danced “Spartacus,” either; a role that made Vasiliev lose 11 pounds in one performance (the choreographer weighed him before and after). The reason why people in America for sure never include him or underrate him on “best” lists is bc he stayed behind the Iron Curtain when the other two defected. Personally, Baryshnikov’s short stature is a big problem for me, and which greatly limited the partners with whom he could dance, and I could never really believed his acting....his head always seemed to be in his technique and athleticism.

@@voraciousreader3341 Erm….the person you replied to was actually complimenting Vasiliev. Saying that he was there BEFORE Misha, and that his moves inspire gasps of awe.
No need to be so defensive, especially when there’s nothing to be defensive about!

@@voraciousreader3341 I could not agree more! Vladimir Vasiliev Is grossly underrated becsuse he di not defect. Nureyev, at the time of his defection, had no One in the western world Who could compare with him. I do not know weather he was really great in the early sixties as I was a child, what I can say Is that I have seen several pityful performances given by Nureyev, even at the peak of his fame which ti me was undeserved.

but Volodia Vasiliev is the best of the, best, his dance had a spirit not only technique.

l was so lucky having seen many many times vasiliev at his time at his top in all his great roles and l agree with you he was a true phenomenon in his art ,but soloviev really despite less seen in west was the only on the same level ,imo he and vasiliev despite some differences in style and caracter are the greatest maledancers ever ,and l saw all the great males of the golden age included many times baryshnikov and nureyev (that was far less good than them )

pediatrapaola: In my opinion Y.Soloviev was rather lyrical dancer, Nureyev was not so clean technically but had more power, fire, emotions in his performances (perhaps only Vakhtang Chabukiani was more powerfull dancer with a greater temperament. He was like a tornado.....). V.VASILIEV had all of them - lyricism, fire, power and magnificent technique.

l saw so many awful performances from nureyev since half 70's that l also don't consider him among the top .chabukiani was magnificent for his time his manlyness his stunning fastness his dinamic enery his fiery temperament are hardly matchable .soloviev had the greatest elevation of all times .vasiliev is as told one of my main heroes .but imo among the greats of that time also mikhail lavrovsky deserves to be remembered

VLADIMIR VASILIEV, a true legend of international ballet. I wish everybody would give him the recognition he so richly deserve and his modesty prevent him from demanding. I TRULY LOVE HIM.

@@lidiabonini3568 It’s truly sad that people don’t know about Vasiliev-although Nureyev and Baryshnikov surely did, and both rated him as the best of the three-especially in America, bc Vasiliev was behind the Iron Curtain for most of the best years of his career. But, I mean, he’s also old here for a dancer, _and look at his turns and leaps!!!_ I kept shaking my head, bc I knew how old he had to be if Fracci was 51, but I could not believe what he was doing, lol!! He’d put 30 year olds to shame!!

@@voraciousreader3341 unfortunately people are spoofed by biased press all bent on creating what I call the HOLY CAWS. They are made untouchable. I can understand the accolades for Micha Barishnikov as he possessed talent and breathtaking techniques. But Nureyev totally undeserved the global praise he was given. I understand the time when he defected here in the Western world, we hardly had dancers worth of the name, so he was a sensation but I have seen many less than thrilling performances by him even at the peak of his fame. Vladimir Vasiliev in my opinion, made the mistake of wanting to live in his country and be the best among truly great artists unfortunately them too almost unknown to the public at large.
