Hey guys, I have just watched your video and it is really cool! Well done. :) I live here in Nuremberg and when this pandemic is under control you have to visit us again. In summer we have cool attractions. Like the "Bierfest" (beer festival?) in the moat on the backside of the imperial castle. The we have the "Bardentreffen" (directly: bard meeting). Three days bands playing free music from the morgning to the night in the whole old town. In atuum we have an medieval festival in the moat and the "Altstadtfest" (directly: old town festival) where you can have some concerts, plays, poems, speechs and so on for free. Also you can have some drinks or food in tiny wooden cabins. And of course in winter we have the "Christkindles Market". If you visit Nuremberg at this time, so make sure you come on a working day. Do the shopping early when it opens an get your mulled wine and the ambience in the evening, so you can enjoy it. There is a little market called "Markt der Partnerstädte" (directly: Twin cities market). There you can have "Hot Toddy", which is a Cinnamon Spiced Hot Water with Scottish Wishky.
I've been to Nuremberg (Nürnberg) twice and I love it! I have a BA in Art History, so I'm a big admirer of Albrecht Dürer. I went to his house and to his grave. Great video!
I am going to have to keep working on convincing my family to go on some of those city tours! It is so interesting listening to the bits of information that was shared with you and that you shared with us. Nuremberg has been on my radar but now I really want to go. I really should see that castle! lol! Going through the lock was neat. Actually I loved everything in this video.
So much history there in Nürnberg. I just realized i've never been to a walking tour in a german town, only in foreign cities. Should do walking tours here, even in my hometown, so much to learn.
Great video, Nuremberg looks like a interesting place to visit. Really like the architecture there. Interesting to see the boat going through the locks; there are a lot of those on the canals near my hometown in the uk. Loving this series overall, quite tempted by a river cruise myself.
Yes Nuremberg is really great and don´t miss Germaniches National Museum, it´s incredible that a museum of this importance is located in such a small town, can almost be compaired to the Louvre in Paris.
My husband and I love watching your vlogs! We are sailing on Uniworlds SS Beatrice for the Xmas & New Year River Cruise and where really glad you did this vlog on Nuremberg as this is where we begin our river cruise. We are so excited as we are from Australia and we are hoping for our first white Christmas. Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing travel diaries 😃😃😃😃
I have a little story about the locks. In 2015 we bought a boat in Heidelberg, my wife, had her 1st helm experience when she drove it down the Neckar & Rhine to Mannheim, including some deep locks. She was thrilled and we didn't crash or sink !
Living between Rothenburg and Nürnberg (where i studied economics at the University) it makes me appreciate my region even more watching your videos. 🖖🏼😎
I’ve found your river boat series super interesting! I’ve always wanted to go to Germany but never considered a river boat. Definitely going to check out Uniworld.
Aside from the history of Franconia, Bavaria is also administratively divided into 7 regions. Each with their own local government. Franconia is itself divided into three of those regions (Lower, Middle and Upper). Since Bavaria is politically completely dominated by one party there has always been some accusations that the state government only cares about the south and neglects the north, which then fueled that Franconia vs Bavaria rivalry. There were times when this was true, but it's no longer the case. For example there is an arrangement where each region has to be represented in the cabinet. There are also some differences with the cuisine and the traditional clothing (for example the stereotypical Lederhosen are really a southern thing). You can also tell the difference from the local dialects. Franconian sounds nothing like the Bavarian they speak in the south. The Middle Franconian in Nuremberg is also pretty distinct from other Franconian dialects, though the basics are the same.
When you sail or boat from Chicago to New Orleans there are a ton of locks too. It would be great if you guys were to try those too. I thought those free day tours in Germany were in German only. Yes these boat tours are from Amsterdam to Budapest I think. They are great!!!
Ok the Boston Terrier was just too cute. Totally makes the trip worthwhile. Not a huge fan of their gingerbread but oh the wurst is to die for. Sorry it appears you didn't get to eat 6 or 8 or 12 of them.
Hello guy, here is my travel tips : try to visit Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelände museum, it is s great experience, enjoy..., Btw, also try Nuremberg red beer, it is awesome
... absolutely right to mention the lebkuchen-gingerbread thing here (btw, this brand is known like VW all over Germany) and of course: this Hänsel and Gretel story is true, I swear !!!!!!! ;-)
Lebkuchen Schmidt makes the BEST gingerbread incall of Germany. My family mail ordered those already 50 years ago. And I still do. By the way, you can buy "Lebkuchen-Bruch" for a lot cheaper - that's pieces with little imperfections (which I never(!) manage to see at all). Go for the Schokolade kind. Addictive - be warned!
Hey guys! Loving this vlog! Do you guys use a stabilizer for your camera? I went to your gear list but couldnt see one. I'm in the market for a handheld stabilizer and I wanted another opinion. Thank you!
This city is so beautiful. I know that Nuremberg laws were made there. How can such a beautiful city has such painful history? Thank you for sharing this beautiful world with us and the good we do have here
When the Nazis dreamed of their thousand years 3rd Reich they saw this as continuation of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE) as 1st Reich which ceased shortly before reaching the thousand years. The HRE had never an official capital city but Frankfurt (place of the coronation) and Nuremberg (former home of the imperial regalia) were among the most important and biggest cities of the HRE. Frankfurt as place where the emperor was elected and home of the first German parliament was from their viewpoint no option. Thus they choose Nuremberg to show that they are the *real* successors of the HRE. It is however not so that they had any intention to shift any legal power to Nuremberg. The former free and imperial cities of the HRE like Nuremberg have afterwards always seen as proud, selfish and obstreperous. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_imperial_city This distrust (or fear) is so deep that no Germany after the HRE (Imperial Germany, Weimar Republic, 3rd Reich, Federal Republic of Germany) has ever given these cities any legal power. Putting Bremen and Hamburg aside which kept their independence till today as own German federal states, no former free or imperial city became a state capital city or seat of a German federal court. That's why Frankfurt is not the state capital of Hesse. And neither Cologne nor Dortmund are the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite being the biggest cities in the respective states.
Just call them Nürnbergers and avoid the issue. 😉. It was fun to see you there. My husband and I go to Nürnberg often and we have always loved it. We call it our European home. The gingerbread there is SO good, but I hope you also got to try the Nürnberg sausages!
Great time there! I need to ask, do you not have locks or canals in America? I’m in the UK and we have them everywhere, but ours are smaller and mostly hand operated. I live near a very famous series of locks in Devizes, have a look at them. Theres 29 locks all in a row, takes you a whole day to accend/descend. canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/caen-hill-locks
In Fact nearly half of Bavaria is not really Bavaria, Upper Palatinate would mostly also disagree and together with franconia northern Bavaria nearly makes half of the State
Hahahaha, yes the Franconian vs Bavarian thing. I am a Middle-Franconian Bavarian (note: there are also Upper-Franconians and Lower-Franconians in Bavaria and there are Franconians in the state of Baden-Württemberg) so I could tell you a lot about it but I guess the UA-cam comment function is not meant for novels. So I'll try to make it short. It's in fact not a special thing between Franconians and Bavarians. I guess you can find those "rivaling" groups also in the states of Baden-Württemberg or North Rhine-Westphalia and others. Or for that matter in the state of Berlin (it's one of three city states) with the eastern Berliners and the western Berliners. In the end it always comes down to the cultural matrix which is much more diverse in Germany than the 16 states can reflect. There are differences like predominantly catholic or protestant regions or historical significance (power/influence) or traditions (clothing, food, drinks, professions) or dialect or even sense of humor. But even then we Franconians aren't a homogeneous group at all (altough we like to pretend that we are ;)). What unites us Franconians most is our "opposition" to Old Bavaria. But even Old Bavaria isn't homogeneous at all: There are Upper Bavarians, Lower Bavarians, Swabians, Upper Palatinates... In a nutshell: It's complicated and basically most of it goes back to the Holy Roman Empire (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d8/Deutschland_im_XVI._Jahrhundert_%28Putzger%29.jpg ), the Reformation and the many wars (coalitions and divisions) in Europe over the past centuries.
Its not a castle its a fortress.. we have here Schloss..oder Burg oder Festung..the last 2 words are more alike 😂😂 Sorry, its the German way to correct everybody. Its not only Nürnberg who call them selfs Frankonian.. f... Bavaria 😉😂 greetings from Würzburg
Love Nuremberg (American spelling). The good with cruising is you get a taste, the bad is you are time limited. Much of what you saw was reconstructed post WWII very quickly as the allies bombed Nuremburg heavily but paid a very, too high a cost. You mention nothing of the WWII history , the museums, the recent past , you are true semi educated millennials.
The most amazing city I`ve ever been to is a small place in Galicia, NW Spain, called Santiago de Compostela ( Saint James of The Field of Stars ). `The third City of Christendom - after Jerusalem and Rome. `Been to Rome - another amazing city but not quite so enchanting as Santiago....
Wer einen Franken "Bayer" nennt, der besser um sein Leben rennt! No, seriously, most of us don´t like the fact that franconia is part of bavaria, that´s true, but it´s not like we hate bavarians. Just don´t call anybody between Solnhofen in the south and the region between Wunsiedel in the east, Aschaffenburg in the west and Neustadt an der Saale in the north a bavarian, and nobody will have a problem with you...
There is so much more to see in Nuremberg too!
Ohh woow i like to try that Gingerbread 👌🏻👌🏻😜😜 i love Germany i need to add it to my bucket list 👌🏻✈ keep safe guys ❤
Loved this video! It brought back so many great memories as we visited Nuremberg often while stationed in Germany.

@@WAYAWAYWithAsh I did the apt river cruise.. Budapest to Amsterdam.. was a wonderful experience.

This is my favorite series you have done so far! Great job!
George! We’re so glad you feel that way. We loved making this series and I know it’s visible through our videos. Thank you so much for watching.
We went and had the Nuremberg gingerbread last week based on your video. It was sooo good, tasted just like Christmas! Thank you for the suggestion!!
Just started watching your videos and I’m loving living vicariously through you all! Your smiles are contagious!❤️

Your UK needs trials for bombing civilians in Nuremberg and Dresden. Soviets as well. Justice for German people!
I'm loving this series, you two!
Started watching all your vids. Love them. Now I want to go to Germany.
@@mlipner4990 I would love to but it is a long long way from New Zealand and a bit beyond my ability to afford. But you never know. :)
I really enjoyed your video on Nuremberg. Great story about the gingerbread!

It‘s kind of funny as a german how you say „Main River“ just as „main course“ but „ai“ sounds actually like „y“ like in „Sky“. But nice Video!
It also help when you know how to pronounce the name of the city "Mainz" (+/- mines)

How much of a tip do you usually give the tour guide? Obviously it can’t be free since they earn their money from tips.
Usually 5-10 euro each more if the tour is extra special.
