Me, originally from the Jersey Shore arrived in Fürth/Nuremberg back in the summer of 93'. Met my German Frau in January 94' tied the knot in 96', was the last three MPs to close Darby Kaserne in late 95' before we moved up to Schweinfurt for my last year serving. During the heyday's of the US Army in the AO the late 80s, we numbered over 40,000 or more in Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen, Herzo Base, Schwabach AO. I'm still here helping raising our kids 27 km northwest of Nuremberg. On a clear day, I walk out to the highest point outside my village and look south to the tallest structure, the TV/Radio communication tower in South Nuremberg. I try to get to Nuremberg once a year, soccer (1.FCN), Volksfest, riding my bike or a train connection. My last time was back in April when I had a train connection in Nuremberg with my daughter and niece (NJ) who I took to Vienna and Bratislava. The memories of the people who came and gone in my life during my 5 years serving....3,5 of it in Bavaria. Have you ever tried a Pfefferkarpfen before? Lebkucken schmeckt immer lecker. Safe Travels. Prost und schöne Grüße aus Mittelfranken.

Good to know, Tammy. One of our issues with fast travel is we have limited time in each place and tend to miss things like the Albrecht Durer House. We will be doing a video on our upcoming 2024 travels in a few months. For now, we will be touring Italy and Turkey to complete the year.

Nuremberg is such a lovely place to visit, we were there in 2005 on our Grand European cruise with Viking from Amsterdam to Vienna. Really looking forward to it although it will be a bit cold for sure.

Great stuff as usual. We lived about 3 hours west of Nuremberg when I was age 1-5, probably where I developed my own fear of heights (Landstuhl Castle was nearby). What a pleasant surprise to wake up to!!! I'm glad that you guys have made it to Germany. Germany can be a lot of fun. And I'm sure you will enjoy a lot of the different types of beer. It's great that you tried out gingerbread items. I've loved gingerbread since a small child. Bread in Germany is also really good. You guys are connoisseurs of beer, but I'm a connoisseur of bread. LOL!
Keep having fun and I'm looking forward to your next destination. I'm glad that you'll be getting to Munich. I had already typed that I hoped that you would get to both Munich and Hamburg. It's good that I didn't hit, send, as at the end of your vlog/video you then mentioned that you were now off to Munich. LOL!
As for Hamburg, I used to go both through it and to it quite a bit since I used to live in DK for whole summers and back then to get off of Sjælland, the island that Copenhagen is on, I'd take the train to the south end of the island and the train would pull onto the ferry and cross over to Germany, reconnect on the German side, and continue its route. It would then eventually end up stopping in Hamburg where I'd either change trains or stop for a night or two and then continue on to usually France or other more southern countries for a week or so of sunshine and warmth before heading back up to Copenhagen. I like hot weather. LOL!
    Greetings from Los Angeles

For the Streetname: Most of the german streetnames (in the old city centers) have their names from the former craftsman workshops which was located there in old times. The Weißgerbergasse means (if you split it in 3 words wich built this name) White (Weiß) tanner (Gerber) alley (Gasse)
White tanning is a tanning process in which the tanning is effected with minerals, such as alum or common salt. white tanning, also called mineral tanning, produces a particularly light, almost white leather. White tanning was mainly used for finer and thinner leathers of calf, sheep and goat.
Often there was more than one of these workshops and before streetnames and building numbers that was the way to find your way through the city (by shopdistricts or often by smelling for example bleeching clothes (smells terrible) or bei POI like old Inns or Pubs or different Soldierplaces (watch - from Watchtower in german: Wacht means Guard) so you had different districts for orientation

You didn’t try the Nuremberg sausages (smaller finger sausages) that the area is known for. Plenty of WWII sites too like the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and museum. That depends a lot on the area... 200 km further west, in the Rhine/Main area with Frankfurt (5th largest city) in the center, people drink a lot more cider, in addition to the usual beer consumption. The alcohol content is similar to beer, but you can add seltzer water or lemonade to the cider, which is very nice. You can also drink the cider hot in winter, very similar to the mulled wine known from Christmas markets. Here the advantage is very clear, because the hot cider contains less than half the alcohol than the usual mulled wine. And while we're on the hot subject... Unlike beer, cider is the ideal refreshing drink on hot summer days. Anyone who has ever spent a hot day at the quarry lake and was unwise enough to pour down several beers understands what I mean. And it is precisely for the reasons mentioned that the Hessian cuisine has developed more around apple wine than the otherwise typical German dishes that go well with beer, which of course can also be found in Frankfurt. As mentioned at the beginning... It depends on the region!

And this includes the schlessia region that became part of Poland when Russia annexed it. That's where my grandmother's family was from. Actually since you're in Europe I think it includes much of Europe going back hundreds of years.

I live around 45 minutes away from Nuremberg :) What I really love about the city is that it is beautiful, but its also good to live there, enjoy it as a "local" and to be able to enjoy the city without HUGE masses of tourists. :) Sometimes if you live in a very beautiful touristy area you cant really enjoy livign there because there are so many people and everything is cenetered around tourism. I always feel "bad" for locals when going on vacation in Italy. Especially smaller cities. :D Do you guys know what I mean?

hi, I'm Stefan from Nuremberg. Thanks for your interest. May I answer a few words to your question? Like almost all larger German cities, Nuremberg was almost completely destroyed during WW2. It was 95% in ruins. At 10:55 you can roughly see this in the picture. After WW2, due to a lack of building materials, a lot of buildings were reconstructed from the old stones. A number of buildings consist of old foundation walls that have been rebuilt but true to the original. It took many, many years.
