I find it significant that you have to be Zora Link for these interactions. It makes me think that the astronomer is seeing Zora Link as a fellow adult and being completely frank with him. Since the astronomer is familiar with the Bomber-kids gang and sees human Link as a child and a fellow Bomber, he likely doesn't get into the dread of the situation as a means of comforting the children. Seeing as how the Bombers aspire to be do-gooders and problem solvers for the people of Clocktown, an inevitable, terrible fate might shatter their resolve to be righteous and selfless in these last few hours. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
¿Wonder if Darmani(Goron Link) who's also an adult also gets the same response? I haven't played the game in ages so i don't remember very well but i recall him saying something similar yet slightly hopeful compared to this somewhat fatalistic resolve.
"All I can do is accept what the cosmos has designed to be the destiny for me and this planet." Wow, Shikashi knew the end of the world was unavoidable and was ready to accept death.
It's interesting to note that in this dialogue Shikashi avoids any mention to a deity or divine being such as the 4 Guardians and the ellusive "Goddess of Time" to explain away the inevitable fate that would befall the world implying he didn't subscribe to any religious beliefs whatsoever and had a rather naturalistic and atheistic view of the world. The details in this game keep piling in.
@@shapedlike____7305 Not necessarily considering the messianic nature behind the "Hero of Time's" arrival to an apocalyptic land cursed by a demonic being which said Hero was more than likely predetermined to vanquish. The Zelda world works just like a divine game of chess with the Golden Goddessess constantly pulling strings so that Heroes (Link) may always be around to fight Ganondorf and wathever other villain showed up. The "Cosmos" as Shikashi put it did indeed design the fate of the planet by sending the Hero of Time to Termina in order to stop Majora's Mask.
@@javiervasquez625 Okay, but the comment I responded to said that Shikashi knew that the end of the world was unavoidable. It would have been unavoidable if Link hadn't shown up, but he did, so the end of the world was avoided. If you want to believe that the Golden Goddesses pulled some strings to get Link in Termina(pulling strings in this case being: make Navi leave Link without a word at the end of OOT), then go ahead, but I personally believe that Termina being saved had a lot more to do with Link. And with the whole divine game of chess schtick in mind, I could technically say that Hyrule in BOTW was doomed in spite of Link waking up after a century and defeating Ganon.
@@shapedlike____7305 The comment you responded to said this: "All i can do is *accept* what the Cosmos has designed to be the destiny for me and this planet" This is true for Shikashi as he accepted the fate that had been preordained by the Goddessess and the divine pantheon which precides the Realm in which Termina lies regardless of wether he may not personally believed in any gods actively willing reality together and making everything function to it's core. ¿You do know that "Link" is far more than a simple mortal being right? He's the mortal personification of Courage in the Zelda world and the literal *messiah* who MUST save the Zelda universe from Demise and Co. as part of a divine plan involving the Triforce. It doesn't matter what you think Link may or may not have done out of his own "freewill" to save Termina at the end of the day he's the "Hero" of the story and so he was destined to save Termina no matter how you look at it. Not sure what you're getting at with your "argument" about the Great Calamity. Seeing as BotW Link was just as capable of defeating Ganondorf just as his predecessors did it only reinforces the fact that the character of Link has the predetermined *purpose* to fight Evil whenever it appears.
Honestly the Dynamic dialogue for how early this game was in the video game industry it is has always made me love it. There's no detail spared with the NPCs and the changing situations. Especially how the Happy Mask Salesman explains each mask.
A lot of Zelda games have development issues concerning cut content and the remnants left behind (Wind Waker's infamous missing temples, Ocarina of Time's medallions that don't do anything, but were originally meant to cast magic), but Majora's Mask never comes up in that conversation. I guess since they knew they were on a tight schedule, the development team tried not to get too carried away with too many work-intensive ideas. Since the development time was so short, you'd think there'd still be some noticeable signs of cut content, but there really isn't. However, I think the Astral Observatory may be a remnant of an idea that was originally much larger. It's such a unique place, there's a classic song written just for it, but you do nearly nothing there. In Termina field there's a couple places with patterns of small rocks placed in walls, these are theorized to possibly represent constellations, which I feel may be tied into an original idea for the Observatory. Also, I always wondered if there's any Easter Eggs I missed that have to do with the telescope and looking at certain places at certain times (besides the deku scrub flying away and the waving men), but that's a lot of work to check comprehensively
Two other things I can think of are the guay, which drops a rupee on the field if you look at it at a certain moment, and the skull kid pattern on the grass. Also that deku scrub doesn't just fly away, he flies around and eventually enters the grotto in front of the observatory and sells you a heart piece for 100 rupees if you deny his initial price of 150.
@@inkaymr4919 how is the deku scrub cut content when its literally part of one of the game's bigger sidequests plus the other thing is just an easter egg
I've always had the same thought; very elaborate design for the interior, its own original music for the location.... and you spend all of 1 minute there. Something bigger was definitely planned for the Observatory at some point.
I always felt like Snowhead was intended to have a lot more going on. It's the only area without a mini dungeon where you get either an item or a song, just the Lens of Truth cave, and the only challenge there is getting to it. Not a lot of sidequests, the only non required things in it are Gilded Sword and Don Gero's Mask. Snowhead Temple has the same boss in it twice and two rooms with the only purpose being Stray Fairies, and one of the fairies is just in a corner, not even in a chest
this kinda confirms that he witness Link on the clock tower, calling the giants and entering the moon only he from Termina (without counting the Happy Masks salesman, the two fairis and the skullkid) can aknowledge Link as the Hero who saved the world
Once again, I'm learning new things about this game over twenty years later. It's a very smart that the astronomer only says to adult forms of Link. No sense in scaring poor children.
this is one of my favorite details of the game :') it's amazing how effectively players were shown the different ways that a person is treated, depending on whether they are an adult or a child. when you're in deku or hylian form, shikashi is very kind to you and wants you to keep your innocence, but when you are an older form like zora or goron, he tells you his worries that he never lets your younger self know. its a very endearing yet sad detail. i love this game very much :')
Majoras Mask best game ever. No one or game could EVER recreate the ambience of this game. When I played it when it first came out like 20+ years ago, I was like 8 years old and had never played a game with such a deep thought in the back of the games mind. Legendary. Always will be too. Even to this day playing MM literally makes me feel all the emotions that make me human all in one plot, nothing else has ever done that to my senses.

@@LostSoulSilver He was going to but Aonuma and co. either didn't have enough development time to put him in the game or simply decided against it due how awkward it would have been to have a 2 meter tall evil looking Gerudo male who ironically isn't evil and has no relevance to the main plot of the game. Mind you though they did eventually create an alternate dimension version of Ganondorf with the character "Zauz" from Phantom Hourglass. That Termina isn't in the world of hyrule as he called it Earth and 3. That Majora's Mask is on of the deepest and secret rich games I've ever seen.
Phatom Asriel I have to admit the word Earth is used in Zeldas that take place in Hyrule too but Termina is also a parallel world to Hyrule. It's interesting to think that the games as fantastical as they are still take place on Earth, really makes you wonder what that means for the lore
Does he tell the same things to Goron Link? He is also an adult, in fact, I think that he is older and more mature than Zora Link. Darmani seems to be a middle age man while Mikau seems to be a young man in his early 20s.
Considering the gameover cutscene after the 3 day cycle where we see Link unsuccessfully *running* away from the Moon's collision with the planet it's likely that smart people just like Shikashi(the man in the video) knew all too well the inevitable end that the whole Termina world would suffer once the Moon crashed into the surface to even consider escaping to a far away land.
If an object the size of that moon were to collide with a planet, the kinetic energy from that collision would reduce the entire surface of that planet to molten rock. There would be nowhere to run. NOTHING could save you from that.
@@TheDisarminghinkle ¿Do you know the channel "Kurzgesagt"? They made a video a few months explaining what would happen if the Moon(the real life Moon) was pulled into collision with the Earth. I don't know if there would be a risk of lunar dust falling down from the sky as small asteroids but the Moon itself wouldn't be able to reach the Earth given it's smaller mass.
@@javiervasquez625 That is indeed why asteroids don't frequently make it to the Earth's surface. I haven't seen the video, but I trust that they'd be right about the moon breaking apart. It's probably fragile enough. But, the moon of Termina did not break apart. It's colliding in one solid mass. And, the result would be as I said. We've observed such celestial collisions before. The prevailing theory is that that is how our main came to be in the first place. A massive collision knocked off a chunk of our planet. The resulting kinetic energy reduced both the moon and Earth to molten rock. And, that molten rock was free-flowing enough to reshape the planet in a sphere(ish shape) again.
@@TheDisarminghinkle Cool info about our planet's past i didn't know that. Regarding the Moon from Majora's Mask remember it was being *magically* pulled into the surface of the world by Majora with an outcome that can be seen in real time should the player fail to stop the Moon from crashing after the 3 day cycle is over. Based on the gameover cutscene that follows all we ever see is fire spreading across the land and destroying everything until all that remains are fire and Majora's Mask floating amidst the hellish aftermath. The fact that there's fire around suggests the planet itself did survive the Moon's impact yet it's surface was completley consumed by fire once the Moon crashed into the surface. Watch the gameover cutscene and see for yourself for confirmation.
