Well Chris and I are now well and truly OBSESSED with rooftop tents, so much so that we started googling buying our own, while we were still on this trip! We had so much fun on this road trip starting from Tokyo, going to Niigata first, then Nagano, all in the cutest little Suzuki Jimney Siera (which I'm now also low-key obsessed with). It couldn't have been a better trip.

I wish my life was such, that I can road trip across japan without a worry in the world, making burnt cheese toast in the morning by a lake, have a morning dip in cold water, go hike in the fog, making curry on a portable stove in the dark, making beautiful memories.. I used to live in Niigata and it was just lovely seeing familiar countryside very similar to where I lived. The rice fields, the mountains, the morning fog, all the green, was just so incredible. Thank you once again for capturing the natural beauty of Japan in another terrific video, Hannah! ❤️

Such a great video idea!
In the meantime, look for groups in your area that organize hikes for beginners! At least in the US, there are meetup and facebook groups for this in many cities. Get yourself a small backpack (18-25L), a water bottle, some bugspray, plus lots of snacks. You don't need fancy hiking clothes or shoes to start. Athletic clothes and running shoes work for most people. Start small on well-marked trails, with a good view or waterfall to enjoy.

I once loved to go outdoors using a rooftop tent. Mine was an imported one from Italy. Bought it nearly 20 years ago. Used it for 8 years and spent in it for around 300 nights. An important part of my adventurous trip throughout the country. Incidentally I could soon recognize the So-daki waterfall, though never been there for decades. There are good onsens surrounding the Mount Myokosan. Your nice video helped me recall my good old memories, when my parents were still young and active. Thanks a lot.

This video is STUNNING! I've always loved your musical choices for your videos, and the shots in this have some real Planet Earth series feels. The misty lake shots are my favourite. Rooftop camping is something my SO and I have been figuring out how to do ourselves!

Omg, this is a dream trip! Traveling in tiny Jimny across beautiful Japanese mountains.
We own a Isuzu AtoB camper for some years now .. they also make smaller campers ..
The truck frame is adjusted for use as a camper and Isuzu ELF with the double wheel at the back is a very save truck to drive ..
You can park it on a normal car size parking spot and is very easy to handle with its semi auto gear
It is the perfect way to travel in japan
We take two dogs and a cat with use during trips and mountain bikes ..

It never occurred to me to overland across Japan. What a great idea! I have wanted to go for awhile. I lived and worked in Okinawa for a year and loved the culture. The locations and videography in the video is amazing as well. So well done. It will def inspire me to do better! Thanks for documenting the trip, i loved watching it.

The Jimny is a real banger of a vehicle eh? All this setup needs are solar panels methinks; not sure what it would take to put some panels on top of the tent shell, or if it's a good idea (how will the wiring go, would it affect the car's performance) but I can totally imagine doing extended one, two week trips in one of these if I had solar power and I'm not totally dependent on the car's alternator to charge up the powerstation.
Ugh can't wait to be able to travel again and camp under gorgeous skies. Take care there!
Yeah I talked about that with Chris and it’s be great if we planned to stay at the same spot for awhile but we usually end up driving around a lot so it wouldn’t be needed, but a cool idea for another time maybe!

NGL, owning a Jimny makes TOTAL sense in the Japanese context. Way more powerful than the usual kei car but fits in the same space, and despite not having much space inside it opens up a lot of options. Road trips to remote mountaintop campsites in Nagano! Tracing the coastline of Shizuoka and Ibaraki during summer! Epic journey from Hokkaido to the small islands in the Seto Inland Sea to Okinawa (yes there's a ferry from Kagoshima), then going back but now on the Sea of Japan side!
Is it possible to rent a camping equipped Suzuki Jimny in Japan for overland trips there?
