Sorry but that clip against Lauri is exactly an example of the difference between a normal pump fake and foul baiting. If Lauri had jumped into Shai, 100% that’s a smart play and a good pump fake. But Lauri jumps into empty space, which shai then also jumps into, which is 100% foul baiting
I 100% agree that it's foul baiting. But I do think that that was also bad defense and if you have open space, you should move your feet closer and remain vertical. Obviously easier said than done, which is the reason why it's a mismatch in the first place.
Exactly! What we should be talking about is how players are actually playing better defense and fouling less in general (backed up by stats), so to get the fouls that SGA does he is clearly foul baiting. The best test is the eye test and EVERYONE can see it. Rare Jimmy L take here.
dude markkanen jumped 6 feet forward lmfao
Didn't they make it a off foul last season wtf
Yes jimmy even said “everyone knows shai isn’t going to make the shot he’s just punishing the defence” how is it not foul baiting if shai doesn’t even plan on making the shot, didn’t harden and chis Paul have to stop with the rip throughs because of the refs I feel it’s literally the exact same thing

That Lauri example is a perfect example of what should not be a defensive foul. The offensive player initiates all of the contact, so why is it a foul on the defender?
I thought that they were ruling out this nonsense a few years ago?? Then people will say "players today are more skilled"
Because he defender must jump in a vertical motion and if he goes forward as well as the attacking player and there is contact, its a def foul
@@jimmywalker8354they made a rule for that to be a offensive foul and just never followed it 😂😂😂
If the he had jumped straight up and Shai had jumped into him it wouldn't have been a foul but he jumped forward. The rule is you have to go straight up, if you don't and the offensive player initiates contact, that's your fault you should've gone straight up.
@@jimmywalker8354 AFAIK they ruled out offensive players drawing contact by kicking out their feet, circling into a stationary defender arm, and other wack moves. Defenders leaping towards their man on a pump fake had never stopped being a foul.
The issue is not that SGA is foul baiting. It's how he does it that annoys fans. When you compare it the likes of Kobe and D Wade, the defender looks silly because they jump on the pump fake and they commit the foul on the way down. Unlike how SGA and Harden does it where they intentionally throw their body towards the defender to fish for the foul.
Towards a defender WHO HAS POSITIION. But it's on the refs. You can't complain about SGA taking what the refs give him. But you CAN say that taking advantage of incompetent refs isn't a basketball skill worth praising and rewarding.
There were several clips of Kobe jumping at an angle into the bodies of defenders. Everyone just picks and chooses who is good enough to call it smart or unethical. The fact he literally just walked everyone down the numbers and shows that sga clearly should be getting more calls due to the high volume of drives and the history of other 30 ppg scorers, means he can’t be doing the “unethical” things very often per game
nope, Wade is just as unethical as the players that you hate, hes the reason that the 2006 Finals is known as the most rigged finals of all time
@@GXprogamer yup, the rules were made to stop his BS and somehow they have let it resurface.

This is the age old debate of utilitarian ethics vs kantian ethics (outcomes vs intentions). Jimmy is looking at hoop ethics through a utilitarian lens, where Shai’s morality is judged on the measurable outcomes of his actions (his FT rate). On the other hand, alot of fans take a kantian perspective, arguing that Shai is unethical because his underlying intentions seem immoral in a lot of his shot attempts (looks like he isn’t even trying to get a bucket, he’s just tryna get to the line).
This is the best comment here!

Yeah, it is unethical lmao.
Also is swear the NBA said they’re getting rid of the “jump into player” nonsense and calling it an offensive foul.
you're missing the entire point of the video. unethical does not exist, it's smart. at the very most, yes, get mad at league for allowing the calls, but it's simply smart to try and get a call you know will be called
@ unethical exist; that’s why it’s a term. Regardless of if it’s smart or not it doesn’t stop the other from existing. They’re not mutually exclusive.
Also doesn’t help that Shai gets ridiculous calls that people in the SAME EXACT GAME WITH THE SAME EXACT refs don’t get.
“Unethical” what is this the sin of basketball or smn? Is it blasphemy and he’ll be sent to the depths of hell? It’s basketball dude. He’s taking advantage of the whistle. Why would you not do that if it’ll get called. Since when did free throws become 0 points. There’s just as much clips of him genuinely getting fouled. Yall see some foul baiting and think that’s a player’s entire body of work. He gets to the line and makes his free throws. If it’s worth 0 to u guys, take them all away from shai and every player. Be consistent with ur takes. If we were to do that, he’d still be averaging more points than ant, curry, trae, lamelo, and almost every other guard AND player in the league. He probably is averaging more than every other player in the league when free throws are taken away, but I’m not gonna bother looking through all those numbers
They got rid of the "lean in" being a foul a couple seasons ago for the first 10 games because fans were complaing then, and the NBA reversed it because all the stars started complaining about not getting their calls. Doubt they get rid of it again because i think the NBA likes players scoring as many points as possible.

Shai may have gotten better at scoring more pts without going to the line during the offseason (maybe because he knew he risked getting labeled as a foul baiter) but with this graphic you can’t deny that getting to the line is and historically has been a pivotal part of how Shai boosts his points
Why you complaining about his 2025 season then if the 2023 season is the only one you can point to being a "negative" outlier?

That's fine, he has every right to share his opinions on his own platform, but it's important to recognize that that's what he's doing.
He basically said in the video that Shai is indeed playing the type of basketball fans are complaining about, but in his opinion it's not unethical it's just smart.
So he didn't really prove anything here, just said that he thinks foul baiting is a skill rather than 'cheating' which is an already known existing take on the subject.

He literally jumped diagonally like five feet just to force contact with a defender who was already on the ground with his feet planted and his arms by his sides. If Shai had gone straight up like an actual basketball player who is trying to make a jump shot, Lauri wouldn't have even touched him. The fact that he has less dependance on it this year in his best season means something does it not
See the problem with comments like this is that you ignore the fact that Shai got him to jump Lauri is at Shai mercy in that predicament so why wouldn’t he attempt to get to the line. @EuSou_Eu"Objective" by showing biased stats 💀 Don't let the man fool you kid. For one, Jimmy failed to consider how refereeing and policies have changed over the years. If it was 2019 and SGA was doing the same thing he's doing now, he'd definitely be averaging more free throws 😅
@asilentrndm3016 stats cant be biased, i think you're lacking some critical thinking skills.
@@tron4816 Stats can absolutely be biased if they lack context. Someone can show you a stat that the player with the highest field goal percentage is DeAndre Jordan with 67.4%. With no context that stat would make it appear like he's the most accurate shooter but with context we all know he's a terrible shooter it's just that he's a big man who plays mostly under the rim so he has a lot of dunks and layups less than 3 feet from the rim therefore mostly high percentage shots. So without context the stats Jimmy showed make it seem like SGA doesn't get that many FT as people think so he isn't a foul baiter except with context like ACTUALLY watching him play with your own eyes he is clearly a notorious foul baiter and flopper.

that luka video gon be crazy
9:30 - No, I don't care about that. He literally jumps into a player in order to draw a foul. He would never have taken a shot there, he just did it in order to draw a foul.
It's one thing driving towards the basket and getting fouled on the shot attempt.
This is just scummy. Not looking to make a shot at all, but then purposefully going into a defender to draw a foul is just bs.
I'm not saying that's all he's doing, or that he's always doing it, but there are soo many examples of him doing exactly that, even in this video.
You don't think he'd take a shot there?
sgas not the only person who does that. curry does it, kobe did it, mj did it, thats just what happens when someone falls for a pump fake. why attempt a 2 point shot when you can shoot for a possibility at three?
@ Not saying he is the only one. Just because it happens, doesn't mean it's not scummy.
In that situation, the only reason he went for a shot was to draw a foul so he can go to the line. Defender can't do anything, as his body is already in motion, and he can't just move out of the way, while the player purposefully goes into him to make contact and draw a foul. He literally jumps towards the defender to draw a foul. It's ridiculous.
Yes, while you can say that defense is not good, it doesn't just automatically make it not scummy to do what SGA and others are doing.
@ Not in that particular situation, no. The only reason he did it, was to draw a foul and go to the free throw line.
Lmao he shows a bunch of clips of Kobe where the defenders fall for the pump fake, land in his face, where then he takes the smothered shot. This is smart basketball.
Then he decides to show the Markkanen clip where Shai is literally given space, then angles himself 45 degrees forward, jumping 2-3 feet into him like a missile. It's textbook foul baiting.
I don't know how he thinks they're the same thing because they're not.
I'm gonna sound like an Old head (I'm younger than LeBrons Career), but the difference between Shai and Kobe is that Kobe wanted to score through the foul, players like Shai, Harden or Embiid don't, they only want the two free throws. Kobe knew 2+1>1+1, we could even say that he prefers to shoot getting fouled because its harder
Yup. 💯
Depends on the play shai gets tons of and 1s
Idk where and 1 trackers are but I’m willing to bet shai is at least top 3 in that metric. Just last game he had 3 or 4 and 1s

Kobe has 7 games with 20+ FTA
@@trudat849 You completely misunderstood OP.
8:32 one key point he’s missing here is that while Kobe is baiting the fouls he’s still trying to make the shot and is putting himself in the best position to do so while baiting the foul, but when he shows the clips of Shai doing it he clearly isn’t trying to make the shot at all he is just trying to get the free throws
That's a good point but I don't think we can really go off just the few clips he chose to include here to come to any substantial conclusion
He didnt pick the clips where shai actually makes them (which is often)
So does Shai 99% of the time.. watch games
Why do people act like sga is the one who makes the call if he is baiting then the ref should feel some type of way that sga is telling the ref that he has no choice in the matter but in the same logic everyone will accept that the ref will always give the superstar the call so is that he's earned the right to get the call or is the ref just that much of a bot that he has to call a foul on every bit of contact?
As long as Shai is shooting the ball, he’s trying to make the shot. Just because it doesn’t go in doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying to make it plus it’s rare u can get a shot off a rip thru

I agree. I also think that talking about the term 'unethical' is just esthetics. You can call it whatever you want, some people approve of it, some don't.
I understand where you’re coming from, but great players earn the respect enough of their defender to get them to bite on certain moves, allowing them to easily draw fouls. It’s not necessarily a direct skill, but it is an added benefit to having incredible skill in the first place. Similarly to how being a great shooter translates to getting to the rim more easily because defenders have to play up on them more.
For the record, I’m not a fan of SGA, or his play style at all. Jokic deserves MVP undoubtedly
Its boring to watch and should not be a part of the game. Make whatever excuses you want but saying “the defense is forced to foul him” is just so stupid 😭

That's why so many people want defense allowed in the first place, so they don't have to watch a guy shoot 20+ FT in a game. Basketball's greatest advantage is in its pace, and the product is complete dog water when you have guys going to the line three possessions in a row. Complete L take.
Kobe better than Lebron.
Honestly I think there is a big diference between pump faking and acting. And that makes the entire diference on wether someone is foul baiting or not.
Pump faking is necessary if it wasnt a thing it would be almost impossible to shoot without being blocked. There needs to be a pressure that someone can dribble for the game to be balanced. Unethical doesnt exist here, it's smart. Why would shai not jump into him if he didn't know he could get a call, do you want him to just pass up on that? At the very most get mad that the NBA calls that, it's not shai's fault whatsoever he plays with what he's given. SGA instead of taking a open stepback shot on lauri he would rather guarantee a foul because he is a good freethrow shooter. I believe 95% of every superstar ever takes that step back shot on lauri btu he chooses not to because he knows a foul is coming
and this also makes alot of his other shots way more open because the defender does not want to foul. SGA is a great player, he is a superstar and being compared to jokic in mvp talks is outlandish. If SGA wins mvp it will be because of voter fatigue and not wanted jokic to get his 4th.

It's a skill to be able to draw fouls consistently, if it's so obvious maybe the defense should adjust. Stop jumping on his fakes and stop making obvious contact but guess what? They can't because when someone can score in a variety of ways, it's little to nothing that you can do to stop them, they're jumping because he's able to make those shots if they don't, they're getting physical to try and slow him down. There’s a reason Embiid and Harden constantly wash out of the playoffs early. Actually there’s a bunch, but one of the main ones is that they don’t get those calls as frequently in playoff games. Making it harder for them to score and by extension their team weaker for it. So you’ll most likely get your SGA answer once OKC is back in the playoffs. Also, that Wizards/Jordan clip is absolutely wild.
Harden washes out because his game is completely two dimensional, teams playing against him over the course of a series just adjust to his play, I don’t think it’s fair to preemptively criticise shai for the same thing when in his limited playoff experience he’s been as good as usual and because he’s a significantly more versatile offensive player than harden

As a Kobe fan and basketball enthusiast Shai is simply using the meta as was intended. Coaches tell players all the time stay on your feet. It actually takes quite a lot of skill from the offense to pull off the footwork to pull off his buckets. If they weren’t convinced by his average of 8.3 FT then there was no convincing them from the start. 💀
