    Botvinnik, seeing that far ahead with his knight move, and seeing at the end he'd be up a pawn at the end, simultaneously blew my mind and made me understand why he's always taking so long to make moves. Wowza...

    9:58 This is the kind of tactic that I'm trying to get better at. Often times at the GM level they create the position they want through deflection tactics. That's something that most of us lower rated players don't usually calculate very well. If anyone has any suggestions for a great tactics book with this kind of tactics please suggest below. Thanks!

    • @HermansAbel
      @HermansAbel 3 роки тому +1

      What helps me to quickly see knight moves is to realise a knight always moves from a black square to a white square, and so on. Maybe obvious, but for lower rated players a simple way to avoid devious traps (or make them ;-) )

  • @mre_physvids

    I’m 100% sure I would have miscalculated at least 7 different lines to botch that endgame as black over the last 15 moves.

    At 19:32 white queen c5 check wins for white, forcing queen exchange ... black can't stop the pawn from queening! Reuben Fine's book on chess endings covers this situation with one pawn and two kings, placing your king on the file next to the pawn file provides the opposition king an escape square, so queening is inevitable unless the pawn is on the A or H file, then there's a possible draw.

    19:03 -- Qh7+ is still drawing, as after Ke5, then either Qe7+ (not Qh2+) or just a waiting move of Qh4 (which is perfectly fine because the pawn cannot advance with a piece sitting in front of it). Additionally, even if Tal were to blunder with Qh2+, he can still hold the game, as, with perfect play thereafter, there's no way to advance the pawn beyond the 6th rank (the engine gets very excited, according White a +3.98 rating, but cannot secure a win).
    19:14 -- Here, a few more moves along the "blundering" Qh2+ line noted above, the engine actually does find the 0.00 drawing line: Qh6+, and either perpetual check continues with the queen sliding the Qc1 after Kc5, or the White king is safe from check on d5 -- but then the pawn cannot move. Even if Black plays a silly move, such as Qd2, White has no forced winning lines, as optimal lines for perpetual check remain for Black. In fact, Black will almost always have more than one choice of moves that maintain a draw.
    20:30 -- Even if White had his pawn on d6 already, he's is not assured of a win if it is Black's move.

  • @RipperMatricus
    @RipperMatricus 6 років тому

    This needs some clarification . At 14:03 there is a variation even loosing for white, if King would go g2 after the check on f3 and the rook comes down , Queen check on A6!! lose for white, after double exchange on c4 black is up a whole piece.
    So white King has to go f1 which tends leads to your variation which would lead to a draw by perpetual.
    I wrote this because somewhere in the comments I read that after the check and the fork black should capture the queen which is just a bad payoff when there is much more in that position than just a Queens Trade.
    Botvinnik is not an easy one to fool.

    • @anthonyokechukwu3888
      @anthonyokechukwu3888 6 років тому

    At 17:28, you say that white doesn't gain anything by Qd1, but I think you do. You're guarding both pawns and on your next move you can take the pawn on g4 with check, which means black still can't take either pawn.

    16:57 imo trying to trade queens with white queen to e2 could be better since the black king would be too far away from the a3 pawn and if black avoided the trade then either white queen to g4 with check if black queen left the diagonal protecting the pawn on g4 ,otherwise white queen to e5 with check,seems to me white would have a better position whether if the black queen goes for the h2 pawn or keeps protecting the d5 pawn. but it s an open board so there are probably a lot more options for black
    also at 19:29 , wouldnt it be winning for white if he went for a queen trade with white queen to c5 check? if queen trades then black king might not be able to stop the pawn since he s at f8,or if queen blocks,after trading it s white king's move to get a better position to advance the pawn but idk ;)

    When tal played queen to e7 during the endgame, botvinnik could have played his queen to e5 with check forcing a trade of queens and his king would end up capturing tal's queen and eventually improve his position and get his pawn promoted ? That move would likely be the best for botvinnik right ?

    Why didn't Botvinik play 59.Qc5+ [20:00] , ofcourse it leads to an exchange of Queens but Botvinik will be a pawn up and he'll queen it easily, forcing Tal to lose the game.
    Black would only have the move ...Qxc5, or ...Qe7, whill will also end in exchange of Queens
    I'm just curious why didn't he think about it (:

      I meant in the video title. Say when people want to see games when Tal was white, they could skim through the playlist more easily.

    @12:42; wouldn't it be better for White to play Q×h6 instead of Q×d2

      If the queen captures the rook, then the knight was going to capture the white rook on f1 and black is up the exchange..

    31.Rf1 was a losing move, but Tal played Re1, not noticing Reh4!
    Also, I wonder why did Botvinnik play 21.g3, instead of naturally looking Nf3.

    I don't understand the triangulating move thing at the end can you explain? It's still tals move after queen checks at d5

      It's not in the playlist. He called the game "You're here to win the match!".
