    For anyone who is wondering about this clicking noise when the engine is slowly rotating, it's because the blades are designed to be loose in their mounts so they self-balance, find their best position and to reduce vibrations

      I had a job long ago with Emery Worldwide loading air freight containers. I was the guy with the headphones and yellow vest. And no I could not pick up music unless the cockpit was playing a CD or listening to the radio. I plugged into outlet on the outside (obviously) of the plane and gave the pilot word up on the fans starting. If they're spinning he's good to go. Pull out chocks and flag him out. Whoops, forgot to unplug...

    If I remember correctly (I am long retired from aviation), the original 737 Classic with CFM56-3 engines could not be dispatched with an inoperative starter because the engine was difficult to start in flight with nothing more than the rotation caused by ram air. In other words, the starter intended for ground use might be needed in flight. Later models of the CFM-56 engine do not have this limitation, so a manually-controlled start such as seen here is allowed before flight.

    • @pap401
      @pap401  4 роки тому

      Very good and correct point.
      Extract from MMEL - "The -300/-400/-500 airplanes must have modified Main Engine Controls (MEC’s) installed on both
      engines for dispatch with the start valve inoperative."
      The A/C shown in the above video has the modified controls but the whole thing was part of a practical training exercise

    Seeing this reminds me of when I was a kid, I worked at this place that had a crane with a big diesel engine. To start it I would kneel on the counterweight, about 10' above the ground with the engine doors open and first start the pony engine. Eventually I would have the big diesel spinning and then close the compression release while spraying some ether in the the intake. The whole process was very noisy and intimidating for me and when the diesel lit off I pissed myself every time. Maybe it wasnt a big deal but I was 14...

    We learned how to do a manual start on the 727-200 in the event the start valve didn't work. I would be on the baggage belt loader and taken up to the engine (they were high in the rear). I would open a small access panel on the cowl and either use an allen wrench, or reach for a small button. I would hold the button until the engine ignited and I was given the signal to release the button.

      he is not controlling the compressed air, thats coming from the APU, he is merely holding open by pulling the starter valve since it failed to open via the toggle switch in the cockpit - without this switch the bleed air cannot enter the engine from the first engine NOR from the APU...the cord below you see is a communication cord only....compressed air cords are not so slim

      You don't need a powered starter control valve for flight. If they had to relight it in the air, the airflow from flying would be enough to turn it. Its "fun" to manually start the engine on a TF-33 (JT3D) because the bypass duct terminates right ahead where you stand, so you're getting blasted with bypass air as you hold the valve open.

Bad move because it felt like two gorillas grabbed me and were trying to pull me in. I quickly recovered with a heart pounding in my chest. When I got over to the others in the launch crew they were like WTF we thought for sure the headset was going to get sucked in, I said you have no idea I thought your fired! All I wanted was to feel it’s power and I felt it all right.

    Back in the 80s my friend who flew the 757 had a similar problem. He got the co-pilot to blow the fan blades like blowing a dandelion until it picked up enough speed then he got out his cigarette lighter and manually lit the combustion chamber up. What they forgot to do is set the parking break and it started rolling down the apron, but luckily they managed to chase after it and stop it. Those were the days... golden age of aviation.

    During WW2 the German ME 262 used a gas motor attached to a long shaft that coupled directly to the fan hub directly in front of the engine air intake. Some fellow would hang on the platform and run this gas engine until the turbine got up to speed and they then pull it out of the way, hoping to not become ingested by the turbine blades.
    The Germans were hard up and it was either hangout in front of a jet engine to start it or the Russian front. I personally think I would try swimming the English Channel.

Found elsewhere fuel-add starts at 15% max RPM. Bashed together the numbers in a calculator, and came up with ~80kW/100HP maximum from the starter motor. Assuming the shaft torque is over-rated for safety I'd expect 40kW/50HP-ish from the starter motor. As demonstrated by LS though, you could probably hand-start and APU sized motor which could start the main engine though.

    I was a jet mechanic in the military and they used bleed air from the engine already running using a switch the pilot Would toggle. It appears this is not an option on a passenger airliner and has to be physically opened and closed from the cowling that’s odd. Maybe I should rephrase my question is why someone has to manually switch a valve to start the engine post failed start cold/hot start? We’re all aware of what’s happening the question is why?
