Peck and Gardner were good friends. When Ava Gardner died, Peck and his wife hired Gardner's maid (a close friend of Gardner's who Gardner wanted to ensure had
a decent job) and adopted her dogs.
Peck was known to be a decent guy.

@@terrytalksmovies He was great in somethings that needed subtle, dramatic acting , 12 O'clock High, Gentlemen's Agreement, The Outlaw or To Kill a Mocking Bird, come to mind.
He was good in light comedies, The Million Pound Note, Roman Holiday or Arabesque.
. . . and sometimes he would look WAAAAAYYYYY to deep into the part and really screw up the part and the movie: Moby Dick, MacArthur (usually signaled by a long, complex, well-thought-out memo to the director).
It kind of reminds me of Charlton Heston making the artistic decision in Touch of Evil to play Mike Vargas, a Mexican Federale and Hildago , with a US accent on the grounds that Vargas was US educated, upper class guy . . . .. but when Vargas has to speak Spanish, he also speaks Spanish with a US Midwestern accent.

I have both the Dr Phibes movies - they are definitely up for a re-watch this month, as is The Curse of the Faceless Man (an old favourite of mine since I first saw it in the 70s on our old Thorn B&W tv on Deadly Earnest.) I'm also watching The Wicker Man this week along with The Vampire Lovers. Cheers and have an awesome week.

The best thing about Schlock is that it is Rick Baker the makeup artists' first feature film. Saw a brief film discussion with Landis and he interviewed a very young Baker living at his parent's home. When Landis walked into Baker's small art room he thought this is the guy, he's a genuis. Anyone else Landis found to make the gorilla costume wanted 20k plus, the total budget of the movie was 60k. This got Baker work as a makeup assistant in The Exorcist and making the mutant baby for It's Alive.

On the Beach is such a great movie. I know it’s based on a novel, but I think the title makes people think is some romantic movie like Roman Holiday or something. Absolutely chilling with a great sense of hopelessness and melancholy.

Great collection, Terry! I've got a few I haven't seen yet marked on my "Buy them when you can afford it" list, and I've seen many of the rest.
Absolutely to the original THE WICKER MAN (and never in Hell to the Neil LaButte remake!), and I really like how unlike anything else AIP was doing at the time THE DUNWICH HORROR was. That was the work on Daniel Haller, who was Corman's production designer on the first two Poe movies, and whose first film as a director was the Lovecraft adaptation DIE, MONSTER, DIE! starring Boris Karloff and Nick Adams in a movie team-up I'm sure nobody, including Karloff himself, was clamoring for. DUNWICH is a much better film and Lovecraft adaptation overall, even if Dean Stockwell channels the Stygian Power of the Elder Gods by putting his fists to his temples with his thumbs out, as if he's trying to cure a headache by tuning onto cosmic zonk rays!
CABIN IN THE WOODS is surprisingly divisive for a film that's a mainly satiric version of "Why DO all these dumb high school and college students always go to deserted cabins or mansions to get picked off by monsters, anyway? And why are all those college students horny, drunk, and dumb as a box of rocks when faced with a threat to life and limb?" THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER PODCAST's Paul Chapman hated the movie and felt the surviving characters were incredibly selfish(!) for not just letting themselves be killed, and his guest host hated the movie as glib and smug! I don't expect to agree with movie critics, or other fans, all the time by any means, but that take was decidedly...bizarre.
Since you like the Dr. Phibes movies so much (and they're great fun-I have both on Blu-Ray), what do you think of Robert Fuest's THE FINAL PROGRAMME? I *think* I like it, but I also feel like I need to read up a lot more on Michael Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius to know what the movie's going on about.
Finally, if DIE HARD is a Christmas movie? Then ON THE BEACH is a horror film-a very depressingly realistic one that I don't go back to because the movie, like the book, leaves me feeling *really* depressed....

    • @terrytalksmovies
      @terrytalksmovies  4 дні тому +1

I like The Final Programme but I acknowledge it's a weak adaptation of Moorcock's novel.

A great selection of movies, some I have yet to watch. I remember seeing _On the Beach_ on television as a pre-teen kid. It bored me, but I was interested enough to watch the whole thing. I just lacked the emotional maturity to really comprehend it. As an adult, it hits much harder.⬅
Yesterday, the GoodBadFlicks channel released a video you may be interested in, "5 Overlooked Films Ep.21 -- Ozploitation Horror". I don't remember you reacting to any of the films he mentions. You may be interested in taking a look; he seemed to like most of them, and he intentionally chose lesser-known movies. You might also consider doing a reaction to his reaction, allowing us to compare an Australian's take to someone from North America.⬅
This last is sort of off-topic for your channel. It is something I suspect you will like though, one of the most transgressive anime's I have ever seen, yet in the USA it can be watched on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll. There is a possibility that Disney/Hulu could have censored parts of it, but Crunchyroll, and I assume Netflix, just throw it all out there. *All.* It's wonderful and uniquely unique, given the odd name "Dan Da Dan". I can see you doing a season review once this batch is complete. (Netflix is actually airing the episodes as they come out, instead of their usual thing of waiting until the season is over and airing it all at once.)

New camera output looks flat and grainy .... ? Wait, no, I had down-tuned YT to 240p on this device, because this device has been throwing fits. Back to 1080p, looks great.
Oh man, that edition of Wicker Man looks AMAZING! Best horror musical ever-chop! chop! Always love to see a godsniffing arsehole get what 's comin' to 'em! Hopefully he's in hell with Carrie's mom ... or would be if hell ... or these characters ... existed.
"... a rabbit hole you'll never emerge from ..." considering the subject this came across very ominous indeed! :D
On the Beach ... excellent inclusion. I'm always down for some Cold War apocalyptica, and have quite a collection.
We (in California) acquired a color television in 1982, and parents used that 19" set for 25yrs. Only grandma had a color set in the '70s, and it was a two-ton console beast that had to be craned around. I might exaggerate a bit, but not much.

I love the Dr. Phibes films! They are so much fun, for all the reasons you mentioned, but also the wonderful performance (in the first film) of Peter Jeffrey as Detective Inspector Trout! He is the perfect combination of bumbling but just smart enough to be one step behind Phibes. Plus his boss always referring to him as another fish! The part gets dumbed down in the second film, which disappoints me. But they are still great fun films. Cheers Terry!

I regret not picking up that Dead of Night DVD when it was available. Like you, I first saw it on TV, albeit probably long after you first did.
Wicker Man took me a long time to appreciate. First time I saw it on VHS I just didn't get the fuss, but I understood it a lot better on a DVD rewatch, it clicked for me in a way that it didn't before.
I have that very Hammer Horror Collection DVD too. That's where my ongoing Hammer collection began.
Cabin in the Woods... beautiful. I particularly enjoyed the ending and how it made sure there wouldn't be a sequel... but at the same time I'd kind of like to see one get made if only to see how they rationalise it.
I remember seeing Dunwich Horror on TV back in the early 90s when I was discovering Lovecraft. Don't think I cared for it, but I'd be interested in a rewatch now. There was a radio version, oddly enough, back in 1945 on a program called Suspense, and it was really good. Much more faithful to the original, too.

I just watched The Addiction (1995). It took me back to my college days. I didn't take anything seriously, since I had my whole life ahead of me. I just studied, worked and partied! It was the 70's after all, and I was young. It was comforting for me in that the main character, a philosophy student, thinks her way into acceptance of her vampirism. The philosophers however give her no solace. That's how I would have done it in my 20's - always over thinking and analyzing. The philosophy is there, but I had trouble understanding Existentialism in my early 20's - too abstract for me. I had never heard of this movie. Mike here, not Anne. We are not huge movie people as far as dramas and such goes and watch mostly Film Noir, monster and some science fiction movies. But if I had to name my favorite movie of all time it would be the "Navigator" a 1988 time travel movie from New Zealand. Do you know it and if not could you please check it out and do a review of it. Thanks

Hi Mike. I've seen it. I'll look around for a copy of it.

Great selection of comfort horror!! Love the "Yokai Monsters" collection, especially the first three done in the 1960's. They make for a good double feature (one for one) with the Daimajin trilogy (stone idols of gods who get wrathful cos of evil disrespectful land developer's- kinda like if the Statue of Liberty bitch slapped *Rump!). "Dead of Night" to this day gives me chills (despite the comic episode done to lighten things up midway)-like you, saw it first on tv and often missing parts (coming in late and finding it already on) so was really glad to get it on DVD then Blu-ray. Philippine Horror/Vampire films?! Count me in!! as for Joss Whedon i want to believe people are redeemable and hope he's doing what he can to make amends. Like JK Rowling i still appreciate the books and the films but i can't support her recent attitudes to trans folks etc. nor Morrisey's racism. but i don't want to dismiss their previous work. sometimes assholes make good art, but it does make revisiting it painful.

There isn't an evidence that Whedon is doing anything to apologise and make amends. You also have to be careful about disgraced celebrities using crisis management companies to finesse their reputations.

Every one says the Devil rides out is Lee’s best roll. I’m still trying to blunder into a copy

Lee is superb in this rare non-villainous role. Interestingly, both Lee and the lead antagonist, played by Charles Gray, were both one time Bond villains.
