Dawn in Costa Rica jungle - Howler monkey sounds

- Rainforest soundscapes are extremely diverse and fascinating to listen to, Costa Rica being no exception. The sheer amount of biodiversity results in a rich and varied acoustic environment no matter the size of the stretch of jungle. Insects, frogs, birds, mammals, even trees - they all need to communicate. Rainforests are mostly dark and as a result visual communication isn't possible at great distances. Sound on the other hand propagates fairly well even in a busy setting.
One species has clearly gotten this message. Howler monkeys are considered the loudest land mammal and their terrifying calls travel for miles in thick jungle. They start calling before dawn when the soundscape is mostly a high frequency insect chorus and they continue doing so until after sunrise. They also call sporadically during the day. Their howls serve to advertise territory and avoid physical confrontation with other groups, and they are typical of central and southern American rainforests.
On my Costa Rica expedition I was reacquainted with howler monkey calls after first having heard them in the Amazon a few years prior. Sleeping on an open platform with only a thin mosquito net between me and the outside helped me immerse myself in the landscape, but also made me much more aware of my surroundings. Hearing howler monkeys at 3 am while the jungle is still in complete darkness is a difficult experience to convey using just words. Hopefully this sound recording will do a better job.
Recorded in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi microphones. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

Listen to a calmer soundscape I captured in Costa Rica: ua-cam.com/video/fRDUdndLSdE/v-deo.html
I've been there. The howler monkey's truly majestic. Their sounds much larger than life. It feels like King Kong will break through the trees it's that loud and strong. Worth the trip if you go.
Yep, they're the loudest land mammal apparently.
Amazing recording! The rainforests of Costa Rica are truly something else. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Insane... this soundscape is stunning. I just hope we all keep hearing about it for a long time. Very well done. thank you
I hope so too!
Incredible soundscape! Thank you for sharing your passion George, it is greatly appreciated!
My pleasure, thank you for listening!
Beautiful sounds. Great work. Amazing channel !!! Thanks so much...I wish you a million views 🤗🔔
Thank you so much 🤗
Fantastic recording. It reminds me of the first time I heard howler monkey calls, 7 years ago at dawn, in Drake Bay, Costa Rica. It was completely unexpected and very intense, with many monkeys calling, very close to the place where we were sleeping. One of my most memorable wildlife experiences!
Yep, difficult to forget such an encounter.
You never fail to deliver beautiful sounds George.Nice stuff.
Thanks very much Will :)
I stayed in Puerto Viejo! I was awaken to this sound at 4 in the morning. The sound in real life is unreal. Glad I recorded it on my phone.
This is amazing!! I stayed in the rainforest for 3 weeks, sleeping outside and being woken up by the howler monkeys every morning!! I missed these sounds and this takes me back to that amazing experience
Amazing, glad to hear you found the recordings.
I have seen and heard Howlers in CR, amazing animals., superb recording.
Thank you!
Thanks for recording this! Brings back memories :) Loved waking up with the noise of howler monkeys.
My pleasure, that's one hell of an experience indeed.
Wonderful as usual. Thanks George.
Thanks for listening :)
Thanks for sharing this soundscape!
Thanks for listening.
Thanks for the vid ,I wish I could go to some of these places to hear and feel the surroundings.
It's definitely worth visiting if you can.
Keep checking ticket prices. Every now & then (especially in “green season”) I find tickets for like $80, cabins for $15 a night too! The food is very affordable there as well 😊
Wow! Thanks for this! We keep hearing this sound and couldn’t find out what it was
Glad I could help
It blows my mind this is recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi mics. What kinds of settings do you use to get such an amazing sound quality with such low cost equipment ?
Wow, I only just saw that in the description. Amazing. I expected it would be some expensive rig.
Yep, expensive gear helps but mic placement and listening skills are more important. So is access to good sounding locations.
@@GeorgeVlad Unfortunately, these mics are currently sold out. But I keep them in mind.
I agree, this is insane!
PS:
Previously, you recommended alternative to the Clippi Mics because they are not currently available, but I forgot to note it.
PPS:
what's the Smallest Handheld field recorder you use, i'm beginning to think the simplest, in tirms of one I can opperate without site is probibly best at the moment, until I get a grip on things...
Also which software do you use in post production and what kind of changes do you make with regards to both posting on UA-cam, and editing for effects Libraries and so forth.
Thanks Melissa. The Clippy EM272 mics are actually the alternative to Lom mikroUsis which are harder to find.
I have 4 Sony PCM A10 recorders and I love them. They're not easy to find though and I'm afraid Sony is trying to discontinue all their sound recorders. They're very small and power efficient and they sound great combined with mics like the mikroUsi.
You can read about my editing workflow in this blog post: mindful-audio.com/blog/how-to-edit-master-field-recordings
I love it!
Thanks Claire!
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
amazing sounds! great job!
Thanks for listening.
This reminds me of the movie Greystoke with Christopher Lambert...❤
❤
I close my eyes and dream of being on the terrace of a cabina somewhere in Costa Rica's rain forest
Enjoy!
Gorgeous
Thanks Fleur.
@@GeorgeVlad I miss the jungle and howler monkeys so much. Amazing to hear them again
niiiice, great sounds, i'm from Costa Rica
Thanks for listening
As MO said in Netflix it's just wind
This is taking me back to Costa Rica 😊 I miss it!!! The howlers 😂 god they scared me the first week
Been there, same experience 😂
Loved the gameplay
hearing them while camping in Costa Rica felt so surreal, like I was actually on the set for Lost or something instead. Such a unique sound. Not quite relaxing.
I know, it can be anxiety-inducing when you're in a tent and it's 4am, very dark and humid.
Do you know what animal or bird is making the call at 50:00? Listen to these dawn sounds in Manuel Antonio this morning.
It's definitely a bird, although I'm not sure which species. I will update this once I get to the ID stage of my work.
Looks like a Gray-necked Wood-Rail
Where was this taken? Sorry if I missed that info elsewhere.
Osa peninsula.
@@GeorgeVlad thank you. I just bought property in Costa Rica (near Lago Arenal) and can't wait to spend time there with the natural scenes & sounds of the rainforest.
Very cool, enjoy your new life!
I SWEAR I'm hearing shades of Wagner!!!
These are very cultured monkeys you see.
Sitting here doing nothing monos. Call
THIS IS NOT SOMETHING TO FALL ALSEEP TO. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RETURN TO SLUMBER
OH NO!
