Yuja Wang plays Albéniz in Verbier

- Here is a new recording, this time with a quality sound, of the two pieces by Albeniz that Yuja has programmed for her recital this year 2022.
In these pieces, which are so difficult that one can hardly follow them on the score, she seems to have fun, putting so much life into them! One can also admire its contrasts of sound intensity, with forte of a great plenitude and pianissimi of a rare softness.
A small amusing detail: in Lavapiés, she omits 4 bars from 6' 39'’16'’' and 8 bars from 7'00’’23'’'. As she can see the score, these very slight shortcuts are perhaps voluntary. Mystery.

Nothing seems "off" to me. All I hear is the magnificent Albeniz.
If you watched the live streams of the Tchaikovsky / Shostakovich Trio, or the Liszt Concerto, or the bits of this recital, just by her manner coming off and on stage, something wasn't right. This Albeniz is great, and she is a consummate professional, but at least to me something was different.
To me Yuja ranks among the greatest. The unpleasant comments, let say without being negative are uninspired.

Musical opinion CAN differ intelligently (and I, tho' a fan of hers, do not lay claim to everything she plays being 'definitive'), and emotional likes or dislikes run rampant in musical history (Mozart vs Clementi/Liszt vs Clara Schumann/Horowitz vs Rubinstein/etc). But most of her naysayers here hate what she wears, and are jealous of her technical ability. This 'informs' their critical mindset; the cart before the horse, and simple irrelevant prejudice as such...

Even for a pianist as good as Yuja Wang, it’s impossible to not make the beginning of Lavapies sound like a chaotic mess. Albéniz was such a troll 😂😭

But being the picky bastard that I am, none of the recordings are clean enough for me---even the legendary de Larrocha. The only version I can listen to happily is the Musecore midi 💀 But that's my problem, not Albéniz's!

I hope Yuja is ok. Something seemed off with her performances in Verbier this year, including the last-minute cancellation of the live streams, and not full performances being released. This Albeniz is excellent still but feels a bit routine as do some of her performances recently.
Don't know. A lot of performances were cancelled because of COVID. She could be slightly out of practice for a performer of her level. I know from playing tennis that some days, every shot just seems on and then other days there are more missed shots. She could be tired from traveling or have other issues that are affecting her mood. Any way you cut it, she is a wonderful pianist with a very extensive repertoire.
Interesting choice of her to leave the sports watch on for a performance 🤔

As much as I admire her musical genius and technical virtuosity, and know that she is truly a marvelous pianist, I hear nothing of the Spanish flair in this music. It seems to be more technical than anything. All of the music of the various cultures and nationalities have there own idioms, cultural sounds and subtle musical perceptions. We can say that of Beethoven, whose Viennese tradition I adhere to, along with Schubert. The French have their own sound, the Spanish theirs, and the Americans theirs, etc. etc. I think she needs to go into this more, and to be aware of it, and to develop her musical sensibilities in this area. The best way is to listen to the old masters, especially those that had the tradition handed directly down to them through the composers themselves, and to have that musical encounter in the countries where they lived. However, that does not mean giving up one's own musical perception, but tradition is the best teacher.
Your case is overstated and wrongheaded. One does not have to be of a certain ethnicity to play with 'flair'. The notes and traditions are around for any musician to study and absorb. Often, in fact, some of the best interpreters of compositions are NOT of that country. Your right not to like this performance or play, but let's not put it down to some spurious magic 'tradition' or ethnic exclusivity...Yuja Wang, through a lifetime of study, listening, and being taught and exposed to the best, knows all about 'idioms' and 'cultural sounds and subtle musical perceptions'. Sorry, but you simply sound rather pretentious and disrespectful...
I know these pieces are extremely difficult to play, but I miss the Spanish sole in these interpretations. Melody line is sometimes not very clear. To my opinion De Larrocha was the only one who really mastered this cycle of twelve pieces. She sort of inherited the Spanish piano music and she produced a very beautiful sound which was unique as well as her rubato. Certainly on the EMI recordings (old Hispavox).
You are unfairly running down Wang's performance by merely placing it against an alternative version you personally happen to prefer. You give no tenable reason for this preference which is capable of response.
Maybe she is beginning to realize how ridiculous she looks in her costumes! Or she thinks her flawless technique makes up for the lack of musical expression. There are lots of outstanding female musicians who are beautiful with wonderful figures, but they have enough self respect to not flaunt it. Yuja is clearly an exhibitionist.
