Francis Vallejo on illustrating the Folio edition of Anansi Boys

- Award-winning American artist Francis Vallejo was chosen by Neil Gaiman himself to illustrate the Folio edition of Anansi Boys, and the result has to be one of Folio’s most joyous creations.
Francis says: “This project gave me the most cool stuff to work on that I’ve ever had… hopefully it got conveyed in the art that I did, because I had a blast doing it.”
As well as vivid spiderwebs on the page tops and five superb full-colour illustrations, the Folio edition of Anansi Boys features a very special tactile pictorial slipcase and a binding that nods to the dual nature shared by the characters Fat Charlie and Spider. Inside, fully illustrated, original black-and-white chapter headings tell their own folktale - all of which are especially fitting for a book about the power and vitality of stories.

This is one of the most exciting illustration projects I've seen in some time. Congratulations to Francis, Neil and Folio. Inspirational.
I went ahead and made the purchase. I was hesitant since it’s so expensive for one book. Even by Folio standards this is pricey and I debated getting 2 or 3 other Folio books in place of this one on the order, but at the end of the day I want to show Folio and Francis Vallejo that going the extra mile on the production of this means something....that there are people who appreciate and value creativity that goes to another level. Creativity costs and if people don’t purchase then we may lose opportunities to get masterpieces like this. Thanks Folio and Francis...looking forward to getting this in the mail in the next few weeks.
Side note: I know Folio claims to listen to its fan base so if you are reading please consider putting something out by Michael Crichton. Also, I think The Martian by Andy Weir really deserves the folio treatment. The book is modern but timeless!

Amazing work. I doubt any Folio illustrator has put as much time into a book as you did in this one. Very impressive. Wish I could get it but it’s so pricey. Maybe someday.

Man this is super inspiring wish i could get the book! Reminds me of Will Eisner but better. Love the comic book feel and the sequential part in the chapters. This is really creative concepts going on here. Thanks for sharing your process I'm digging it all.
