Now that I have seen other track videos by those who have bought the retail version of the Model S Plaid it is crystal clear that the car in this video is not in standard retail trim, despite Tesla claiming that it was and the record being listed under "Electric production cars".
This car is show accelerating in turns at the limit of traction, accelerating while riding on track curbing, and braking heavily and repeatedly at speed. Stock Model S Plaid cars sold to date do not do those things.
Recently Tesla sent an OTA update to enable "Track Mode" which may address the corner acceleration shown in this video 4 months ago, but the record setting car seems to have had brakes that were mechanically improved over stock cars.

On that long stretch of straightaway just before the finish line the driver had plenty of room to floorboard the accelerator and reach the Plaid's present top speed of roughly 165 mph (268 kph). We know that EV's are super fast, but is it only me, when I watch these records being set in an ICE car it sounds exciting the engine revs screaming, the bilp of throttle on down changes etc. With the EV's nothing but the tyres screaming in protest and the wind noise.
I appreciate EV's and I'd love to own a Tesla as a daily driver, but for track use I'll stick with my cars with good old fashioned engines powered by dead dinosaurs. Plus I race endurance races and that's where EV's struggle. How many times do you think this Tesla could lap the Nordschleife before running out of charge? then having to sit in the pits for the next hour charging the battery. Even Formula E races only last 45 minutes. So I guess the point I'm making is yes its fast, but limited in race terms, fast for the roads but in nearly all countries the speed limits stop you from having any real fun so I'm not sure what Tesla are trying to say with this record, it noting that we don't already know EV's are fast but limited in range.
