Much later Lost Code was brought to Phila. Park & one afternoon they brought him.out between races to give an exhibition work out. I was leaning on the backstretch rail to watch him along w/our top groom, an old guy from MD. who.had forgotten more than I learned. We watched him.move from his warm.up into his working gallop & he came around the first turn rt @ us w/the crowd so quiet you'd think.we were in church. He came storming past us in full flight & you had to be there bcs it was the 1st time I watched a work & COULD BARELY HEAR HIS HOOVES HITTING THE TRACK. Just this little-bitty "trrp, trrp, trrp..." as he went off around the stretch turn. Idk how he did it. To move like that meant he had to.be hitting every stride on just his one toe for the whole trip. And he still remained sound. And the joy he brought to racing had him.do.that in every race he was in. Even the ones he lost. I was grooming for one of the top trainers in the country & the word I heard from him & his cronies was "Freak...". And his connections were fobbed off as nobodies who just happened to luck into the horse & amazingly didn't break him down. Ah, but by Haskell time most of the Ky blue bloods wouldn't deign run against him, preferring instead to retire early to the social whirl of Saratoga. Lost Code proves there will.always be horse racing. But oh, my dear, could we use DNA like that in our Thoroughbreds today! 😪
Lost Code was 1 of the most amazing horses in racing & that was in the generation of those other 2! Look @ him here in what I think was the best race of his career - even tho they caught him on the end! Look @ those fractions. He drove the outcome of the race the whole long way & it took these 2 other legends to run him down. In a 5-horse field! That shows what the best thought of him then. He had figuratively come out of nowhere to take so.many black type races away frim the Millionaires Club & always did it in fine "in your face" style. Compare his race highlights w/what is being sold so hard to us NOW. How many times did he run the half in 46.2or 46.3? And he still had a kick coming down to the finish line. He & Alysheba were my favorites that yr & Aly went on to win the greatest BC Classic the sport has ever seen. What a shame we'll never get to see much of his blood go on, due to.his connections being so unfashionable to the business at the time. And Alysheba was having the same problem when he passed away so.young. Only Bet Twice went on to become a prime stallion in racing's traditional sense. Guess we know where the money was on that one.
