I pulled a fast one on my local bookie right after he crossed the line. He was slow to change the Derby ante post prices on the board so I stuck a tenner on him at 16/1 to win the Derby. I was flat broke when Derby day came around and that £160 was a life saver.
Slip Anchor was so underrated ... He is one of the best horses of the last 50 years ... doubt any horse could have beaten him that day at Lingfield and later in the Derby
Certainly was Jean ... His run in the Derby was superb & some quality horses in the field, Brilliant performance.. 85 what a year ...Oh So Sharp & Slip Anchor ...
@@gregl6527; I saw Steve Cauthen give a brief interview & he said that Slip Anchor was the best he sat on BUT someone popped on a comment saying Steve told him PERSONALLY that Affirmed was the best he sat on. In my opinion the 70s and 80s were the two best decades in horse racing. The 85 LingField and Epsom Derby was the easiest of a winner you’ll ever see in a horse race. Just absolutely a monster performance. Cauthen was just magical. Came back and did the same thing two years later on Reference Point.
Actually it's Jimmy Lindley not Richard Linley. The latter who you mention rode a lot of Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin's horses in the 1980's - Gaye Brief, Half Free, Fifty Dollars More et al.
I was also there on Derby day, however, the only horse I saw that day was a bloody police horse..... Spent the entire day drinking beer and playing cards 😂😂😂😂
This is superb, I've only seen the head on part commentary from the racing year 1985 video, presented by Brough Scott. If Slip Anchor had remained free from injury I'm sure he would have won many more races

Those were the days when Lingfield was a joy to go and watch racing - no dirt BS on the inside - a good proper turf track only !
Graham Harvey yeah Kempton and Newcastle lost their turf flat tracks all together. No Substitute for turf in my opinion

Steve rode a beautiful race to win the Derby trail on Legal Bid 2 years later to.
Reference point,Legal bid finished well behind slip anchor in his derby,
Legal bid never won any derby, he was well down the field behind slip anchor at Epsom, and Steve Vaughan won his second derby on reference point.

Interesting to see Steve riding in the English style there, when he first arrived he rode in the typically American style.
They Dont have Races And Jockeys And Commentators Like the Old School Tradition
We know the horse's name & surely Steve has stolen it! 🏇
Hi Eddie, do you have any of Slip Anchor's pre Lingfield races to upload?
Thank you in advance of any ☺
Lingfield sure has changed!
Jimmy "stands over a lot of ground" "stamps his stock well" Lindley.
impressive.
rip jimmy
Slip Anchor, slipped away and crushed them in a walk! Good by!
I wish more jockeys would learn to judge a pace from the front.
Cauthen, great rider. They ran him out of NY. NYs loss. Racing in the states is un big trouble. Same characters stealing all the money!
I expected an American accent
thats unusual to hear an american accent from an american !
@@iancarpenter6298 I think the suggestion was that Cauthen did not actually sound American and had lost his accent here.
