  • I've had great success with growing sweet potatoes in straw bales. Even though the weather was tough for gardening this year, I would still call this harvest pretty good. Most of this harvest came from only two slips. Let us know if you've ever tried to grow things in straw bales. Thanks for watching!

    Nice potato harvest. Will make delicious sweet potato casserole for Thanksgiving. I still have lots of work I need to do outside but I’ve lost momentum. The next week looks really nice and I know what’s coming so I’ll try harder. Good to see you are doing ok.

    That's a good harvest for the red garnet. You got more from those two slips then I did from a 8'x3' bed. My store bought purple potatoes grew last year, froze off, I covered the bed with compost, they grew back. I harvested in October. I maybe got 5 pounds, I haven't weighed them. The vines grew great too great I think. I kept trimming them back and giving them to a friend with chickens. They loved the vines. For the effort put into them water and fertilizing it really isn't worth the time and harvest in my opinion.
    I'm glad to see you back in the garden. Hope you are feeling better. Have a great weekend 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

    The Trader Joe's purple sweet potatoes are Murasaki. Your huge one is a good example of how Murasaki sweet potatoes are often shaped. Some of the Trader Joe's packaging includes the Murasaki name, but others just say 'purple'. Awesome harvest!

      Thanks! I think Murasaki sweet potatoes have white flesh. These are purple on the inside too.

    The bale looked dry for raining that day. The heat was bad this year. Might have to up the watering. You did get a decent crop. Hope they cure up nice for you.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 місяців тому

      Thanks! Yes it did look dry. I guess I should have said lightly raining. That one end looked extremely dry. Probably why I didn't get much from that end. It's possible that one of the drippers got clogged.

    Nice harvest! You got just shy of the same volume I got out of a 8'x2'x3' birdies raised bed that was planted with about 12 slips. I dug mine October 20. I was very disappointed because the soil was very loose and mixed with lots of straw, peat and vermiculite going in. But I experimented with interplanting 4 tomatillos down the center of the bed. It looked cool but I hated it and I won't be doing that again. Pretty sure it's why the harvest was so poor. Also I am wondering if our drought level was more severe here. We were in the most extreme level of drought up until a few weeks ago. It was "exceptional drought" or something like that. We are in the suburbs east of KCMO. Weird that my lawn never died and I thought sweet potatoes thrive with heat and drought but I guess everything has its limits and this years heat wave pushed the limit 🤷‍♀️

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 місяців тому +2

      Thanks! Yes, I think you are right. Everything has it's limits. We were in exceptional drought here for most of the summer too. We improved to moderate drought with some recent rains. Maybe the tomatillos shaded the vines too much. It never hurts to try different things though. At least you will know next time.

    They do look excellent. What do you have to pay for a straw bale where you live? Remember when they were less than 2 bucks and I'd buy them for horse bedding. Glad I'm not having to buy hay, straw or shavings anymore...but really miss the compost it made.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! The price of straw bales around here is getting ridiculous. It doesn't seem like that long ago they were 4 bucks a bale. The last bale I bought was $8.50. We did have a bad drought this year though. Like you mentioned, they do make some good compost.

    In my experience the purple sweet potatoes dont perform as well as the other varieties in production and size. How much are you paying for a bale of straw?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 місяців тому

      I don't know how much longer it will make sense to grow in straw bales here. They have doubled in price in the last several years. We paid $8.50 for the last bale we bought.
