Good Morning Jim - Awesome video on growing sweet potatoes in bales and I'd say with the success you have had, duplication by others would be pretty easy. Hope you have a great weekend and are continuing to heal..
Im growing for the first time in straw bales and I must say, I wish I had done it long ago. Not just sweet potatoes. I still have done some in ground planting but so far it has been so much less work to maintain.
Excellent video on growing sweat potatoes. My garden space is rather limited for growing sweet potatoes. The vines do sprawl everywhere. You've had some great harvests from your bales over the years. I hope everything is going well for you. Take care and have a wonderful weekend 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Thanks Shirley! Yes, we've had some pretty good luck growing them in straw bales. Everything is going well here. Hope you and your family had a Happy Thanksgiving!
@@MidwestGardener Thanks, we had a great Thanksgiving, I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving too. I'm glad all is good there, everything is good here too. Out in the garden planting today 😀😀
Nice video, mate! Seems like there’s a fair bit of work involved but those potatoes must taste “sweeter” than those you buy from the supermarkets. Enjoy the weekend. Cheers :)
Thanks! Yes, there is some work involved....mostly at the beginning. Just about anything homegrown is better than what you get in the supermarket. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
I don't worry about clearing off the mushrooms. Sometimes more of them pop up after I plant. I don't remember if I mentioned it or not in this video, but the mushrooms are poison. Once it gets hot every day, I water every day.
Thank you for sharing all this info! I have a follow up question - after planting, do you have to continue fertilizing with any particular strategy due to the fact you’re growing in the bales? Many thanks!
You're welcome! I have added some water soluble fertilizer a couple of times during the summer. I've also not fertilized at all and have gotten a harvest....just not quite as large. The roots eventually make it into the soil below the bale.
You may wish to add a final step explaining how to cure and store sweet potatoes. Curing improves the flavor and long term storage durability and the storage environment has a significant impact on tuber quality during long term winter storage.
Thanks for the suggestion. I did think about including that in this video, but I didn't really have any clips I clips that I could use to show the process.
😂thank God for you teaching us a cool methid❤
You're welcome.

In the south a lot stuff needs some shade.
I can understand that. We can have some pretty hot summers here too.
Do you clear off the mushrooms before planting? If we dont have drip irrigation do we just water daily?

Would bone meal work?
I doubt if it would have enough Nitrogen.
Those look like the Cell Asylum mushroom
Could be....I have no idea.
Do you plant the sweet potatoes now, or wait?
I usually plant mine in the first part of May.
