The Wolves have returned... Bear(s) too! | Living Off-Grid on the West Coast

- Hello everyone! My apologies for being a day late. My excuse is that is has been the busiest 2 weeks of the summer so far!! A mish-mash of stuff, but I hope you enjoy!
ps. I had a chat with one of the kayak guides on the shoreline and she told me last month she had put her tent up on the trail to our property and during the night she heard a wolf run right past her tent down toward us here - yikes! She said he was in quite a hurry. I haven't seen any deer in the last few weeks - which makes me sad :(.

• Woman Living Off-Grid ...
Hi Amanda, what a great video, I am thrilled that showed a different side to you than just being outdoors cleaning out. Hope to see you do more cooking indoors. You are very smart when you know there is a bear around and you can't see it, the best thing is go indoors. I am always excited when you post, thanks for sharing.
Hi John! I am glad you enjoyed the video. Living the way I do things can get a little redundant i think (haha!). I do have to give credit to Peach for sensing the bear way before i knew it was there. thanks again for watching 🧡🧡
@AmandaOffGrid Always, you are on my most favorites list.
Always happy to see you and Peach❤ When I see the fog rolling in, I just love that, there is something magical about it. You are looking well and Peach looks happy 😊 still very convinced the owners are so fortunate to have you as the caretaker of their property, you work hard and keep it looking beautiful! Thanks again for sharing
i 🧡 fog as well :). you are right about it being magical!! thanks so much for watching 🧡!
Day late better than not at all, wolves and bears , omg, be safe 🙏❤
Another great video & love the tahini addition! Definitely craving that now & will try your recipe!
Nothing like waking up to the cones hitting the cabin roof like a bomb. LOL
Nice beach combed wood.
I find that the music and scenery at the start just makes me happy and relaxed! I enjoy every minute of your videos Amanda❤ Hope you and Peaches stay safe.
i am so happy you enjoy them :)!! 🧡🧡🧡
Hey Amanda & Peach
What a lovely surprise and a welcome break 😊
Hi :)! Thank you so much for watching :) 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Amanda thanks so much for your video! I noticed how cool it is there. In central texas where I am located, we are having a bad heatwave and it’s supposed to get worse through the week. Today the high was 111 degrees😮! I love the cooler weather for sure. Anyway, I have to deal with rattle snakes. At night you have to watch where you step. I imagine where you live bears and wolves could be a big challenge.
Anyway, have a beautiful week and thanks again for sharing your adventures with us ❤
Oh and give Peaches 🍑 my best too! 🦮
i have heard how hot it is in Texas - yikes!!! stay safe!! the only snakes i see here are small garden snakes, thank goodness! the bears aren't so bad. they'll avoid us if we leave 'em alone (which we do), but the wolves are a bit of a nuisance for the dogs of course. really restricts their freedom on the property. thanks so much watching and stay cool!!!
Laughed my head off a start, when you mentioned the peanut butter...Hope all is well with you Amanda and Peach too, always great catching up with you every week...Stay safe 🙂
yah, it definitely had to be Peach as she's the only one that had peanut butter this morning :) 🧡🧡
@@AmandaOffGrid Haha 🤣
Lovely video, foggy opening shot was neat! Stay safe!!!🇨🇦👍❤️
Thank you Lucy! Thank you for watching :) 🧡🧡
Your scenery looks heavenly! I’m in Dallas TX and today was the hottest day of the summer 107°F.
Enjoy your days! You and Peaches stay safe!!
oh wow, so hot!!! stay safe in that heat!! 🧡
Thanks for showing us how to make home made tahini. I eat tahini all the time but never thought to make it myself.
oh gosh, you're welcome!!! yes for sure make it! i got that whole bag of sesame seeds for $18 at Costco. a jar of tahini here is about $11 and you only get 1 cup of tahini in it!!
Hi Amanda nice to see you and Peach 🐕 stay safe 🙏🥰🇨🇦
Deep breaths, so peaceful yet so much hard work to maintain!
Your tahini looks tasty! Fingers crossed that the deer took a swim to an island where the wolves are currently not! And that the wolves move on soon so you and Peach can walk around a little more freely. Take care!
yes, i hope they've swam to another island. that would be great!
Hello Amanda and Peach. Your tahini looks delicious. If you ever have sweet potatoes, they are yummy baked and topped with tahini, a bit of soy sauce and butter. Good to see you. Thanks for sharing your lives with us.
that sounds delish!!!!🧡
So good to see you and peach! Now I have to make my own tahini! That looks yum!!! Hope y’all have a wonderful week! ❤
hi Pam, i hope you do. it's delish. Avocado oil is good too if want to use a more neutral oil :). 🧡🧡
Another great video - I look forward to every one . Do you ever relax?
The black bears have been active here as well. I think it might be the time of year for them to fatten up a bit for the winter - they've been eating the blackberries and wild apples on my property.
Stay safe.
there has been surprisingly little black bear activity here this year. i wonder if it's cause it was colder than usual... thanks for watching!
Hi Amanda, great episode ❤ would be nice to visit their one day
We got that rain and thunderstorms on Saturday night. It was crazy lightning in Tacoma Washington.🌩️⚡️❤️💯. Thank you again for a great show.❤
crazy!! i thought i heard thunder here yesterday... i think what you had just moved over here :)
Hi Amanda real nice video love seeing Peach and you and what a beautiful start to the video . I am just back from an off grid cabin in northern ontario , saw a couple young bear around where i was . Fun watching you whip up some Tahini. shall have to try that. thanks and thanks for bringing us along .
how nice! i hope you had a lovely time... i always love seeing bears! thanks for watching!! 🧡🧡
Great video Amanda! It was so wonderful to meet you and spend time in your slice of paradise! We had an amazing trip, and on the way home saw Ocra to top off our amazing time.
hi :)! i really enjoyed meeting everyone. i think in my video i said there were 5 women, but i realized after it was '6'!! i am so glad you got to see some orcas... they've been here a couple times, but haven't had a good view of them.
Hearing the whales in the background was amazing! I love tahini on roasted eggplant- I guess it's reminiscent of baba ganoush but less involved. One of my favorite sweet treats to make is sesame crunch, toasted sesame seeds folded into hard crack caramel with a little honey! It's so good but has the sesame to make it more nutritious.
oooh you just reminded me of that recipe. i think i'm going to make that for dinner :)! i'll look for a recipe for sesame seed crunch. i wonder if you could make that with maple syrup?
Another great video....can't believe it hasn't warmed up enough out there to remove your torque and heavy work shirt!!! LOL
Hi Amanda, so refreshing to see your greenery, listen about your wildlife and I will try the tahini.
Love from Italy 🎉❤
Your video pop up and well dinner can wait! That fog is thick. Funny I used to call August Fagust when I was way younger.
My husband and I used to go on many of trips when we were younger. Unfortunately he is not well, so we are home bodies now. I really enjoy your videos, especially when we had a heat wave. Watching you in the cool weather, with your flannel shirts and sweaters made me feel like I was back home. Thank you!
haha!! we are kindred spirits as i'm a homebody as well... wherever my home is, that is where i like to spend my time :). thanks so much for watching 🧡
I live on a small residential island in Niagara Falls, NY. It has been so wet this summer that I have marsh like conditions in my front yard from all the rain and my sump pump discharge. I've lived here 49 years and this is the first time it's been like this. We've had a really "tropical" summer until this week. Cooled down to upper 60s and it's a welcome change!! We have a few fox and coyotes here, plus deer once in awhile. They swim the river and land occasionally. I've not sen them, but other residents mention seeing them occasionally. Glad you're keeping Peach on leash. Like most young dogs, she's too curious for her own good😂 I've read a lot of books this summer because of the weather! I don't have tv, just watch a few favorite shows online. However, cell reception is sometimes inconsistent, so reading is less frustrating 😊 I enjoy your videos when I get the chance to watch. I just watched one of your earlier ones where you were still living on your boat and had a seal "visit" several times!! Be careful and enjoy what remains of your summer.
You were not kidding about Fogust! It's wonderful to have lovely new people around, but it's nice when they go too! I bought toasted sesame seeds, but from now on I will toast my own! I like my tahini a little runnier too! Yum. So just roasted slabs of cabbage? Then drizzle on some tahini and lemon juice?
yah, we've been socked in every morning with fog for weeks! here is the cabbage recipe (i forget where i got otherwise i would credit the person!!):
2 heads cabbage (quartered)
1/4 cup olive oil, 1/2 tsp each, salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder (this is a rub)
roast 400F for 30 minutes
tahini sauce (pour over roasted cabbage)
¼ cup lemon juice from fresh lemons, 60 mL
2 cloves garlic minced
½ cup tahini 60 g
2 tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp salt
¼ to ½ cup cold water can use more until you reach a consistency to your liking, 60 to 120 mL
@@AmandaOffGrid Looks really tasty and I have all the ingredients! Woot! Thanks Amanda! Elaine is out!
Happy to see you and Peach are doing well 🦮❤ The cooking part of your latest video is really interesting! I never knew that making your own tahini is quite easy 😄 I think I´ll try making that as well! May I ask what you usually eat on the island? All the best to you and Peach! Be blessed 🥰
it's so easy!! and so much healthier for you if you use a good healthy oil :)!! i eat a lot of eggs :)! i stock up on those. i don't eat gluten, so no bread. i just made myself some thai chicken with rice :).
Hi Amanda. Another great video. I love the cooking and cleaning you added. You are a hard working lady for sure. You be safe and keep peach on that lease. Be blessed dear.
hi Carol! i'll see about adding more cooking stuff. i'm just glad people found it interesting :)! thanks so much for watching :)
Took a peak, long daylight here in saskland, winter comes will try to fit in some catch up vids! Sounds like a wonderful life. Good health to you! Thank for the post!(lots of work)!
You live in a magical place, Amanda! Your guests are soo lucky. Lovely to watch the cool fog on a hot day in Germany 😅 Stay safe! ❤
Hi Gina :). I love watching the fog as well. especially when we're completely socked in! thanks so much for watching.
But I am wondering about bears when you and Peachy are alone? Love you guys, Hi Buttercup in spirit!
It was fun to see you cook and see the beautiful cabins
I love your videos! You´re so beautiful and peach seems to live such a happy life.
Thank you so much watching :)!!! I hope Peach is happy... the wolves are cramping her style right now :)
Loved everything bout this video, especially the cooking!! Stay safe my friend! Beautiful Island to live on! 💜😊
yay! thanks for watching 🧡🧡
Be well. Be safe.
While we love Port McNeill, I agree shopping for groceries is expensive. I too shop Fields, IGA and also a small discount store in the same mall a little bit further from Fields and further from IGA. I always find good deals at Fields and that discount store. This year, I was delighted to find a yummy French mustard at the discount store for $2 and it was a good size jar. I think prices in Campbell River (Canadian Superstore), or Nanaimo Thrifty and Costco, offer a better price, but then we all need to do what we need to do to survive and that often means shopping local (which is good for local economy). Over the years, I've periodically found good prices on a van in Alert Bay selling produce, but I don't have a good handle on when they are there. Definitely not a local business.
Love your videos, your photography is awemazing!!!!! Thank you for sharing, love to you and Peach❤
oh wow, thank you :)! thank you for watching 🧡🧡
Be careful around those wolves. We had a recent incident where they attacked some people. Heck they even killed someone not to many years ago in this state.
Thx for sharing your lovely part of the world with us can’t imagine living with bears and wolves just hanging about hug to peaches and stay safe
yah, i could do without the wolves :)... i worry about Peach too much :). thanks for watching!
That tahini recipe looks great - I've only ever bought tahini from the store to make hummus. More cooking segments, perhaps? 😁
I just love Amanda and this channel.!
Glad you & Peach are safe after your bear encounter! I'm used to watching out for snakes, so I'm not sure how I'd handle coming face to face with a bear! What's the warmest that it gets in your area? I'm in the south and we're baking with temps in the upper 90's. It's nice to see your videos and dream of cooler weather! Stay safe. Thanks for the recipe for Tahini. I'll give it a try!
Please! Keep making your videos. I love watching them as it always puts me in a good mood.
If there is a next life? I want to spend it like you do!
oh thank you!! i hope to make them for awhile yet. who knows where life will take me :). thanks so much for watching!
Love the spiders' webs. They are a work of art. I have a resident spider, Horace, who lives below my deck. As long as he stays there, I love seeing his webs. I captured him at night once, in torchlight and he's huge!
i'm imagining something from the Lord of the Rings living under your deck - haha!!
@@AmandaOffGrid I am monitoring his whereabouts!
Joys of nature, the good, always respect plus be aware of, as we share the beauty of it.
Yes! Indeed! I have a very healthy respect for wolves and bears and always err on the side of extra careful!
We haven't had too much fog this summer. There was a couple of bad weather days where a couple of the fishing lodges got really messed up with changeover!
It must be chilly down there, you still have a thick jacket etc on! ......it's very much shorts and tee shirt weather up here.
Hi Sarah :). it's chilly in the mornings and during the day inside my cabin. I don't keep the woodstove going all day so I have to stay buttoned up to keep warm when I'm inside. That morning it was about 8C. Once 10AM hits temp starts going up. I think our high last week was 17C. I think we got all the fog down here!!
Loved that you added a bit of food prep in the kitchen! I remember you saying you eat gluten free, curious to know your favorite GF meals. I'm always looking for GF meal inspiration. Great video as always! 😊
I'll be sure to do some more cooking in the kitchen :). maybe i'll make some of my 'sweet' treats next :). gluten free of course!
@@AmandaOffGrid Looking forward to it! 😊
👍👍👍😃✌️💪❤️great hearing from you!
I'll be making the tahinni.. Thank you.
it's so good!!! if you roast the seeds longer (darker) they get a deeper richer taste :)
and it's so much cheaper!! that whole bag of seeds was about $18 from Costco. a jar of tahini that size here is about $11!
I enjoy your videos. Splitting wood seems to be a big part of your job. Is wood the primary source of heat for the buildings with propane (perhaps) secondary? Do you get out on your boat often? Thanks for the tahini making segment -more please!
splitting wood is my main job in the summer as i need wood to keep me warm through the winter. the cabins are 100% heated by the woodstoves. thanks for watching :)! 🧡
Saturday and Sunday were quite the loud thunder and lightening. We even had hail in Shelton. Washington.
hail?!! that's crazy! wow!
That tahini looks delicious! Can you share your humus recipe? Love watching your videos! I live on the South Island.
it is super good :). maybe i'll do hummus in another video perhaps :? thanks so much for watching!
Another perfect video thank you for sharing 👍😁
A beautiful opening.
Love the intro! Be careful with the wildlife. Have u started fishing yet? Thanks for the video!
A beautiful area! And nice channel! I’ll follow it.
Thank you!!
Living your dream. Stay safe...!
Enjoyed your video thank you
So glad! Thanks for watching :)!
i`d be carrying a pistol for sure - get familiar with one - i wouldn`t even count on bear spray
The squirrels are eating the pine nuts. Do the owners rent out the cabins on Airbnb? We’d love to visit. Always enjoy your updates.
ah good to know!! thank you. you can email me at the email address in my YT bio ask about the airbnb :)
@@AmandaOffGrid I don’t see your email in your YT bio, am I missing something?
there's a button that says "View email address" under channel details. Click that :)
You've inspired me to make my own tahini salad dressing. Have you met the new caretakers on the neighboring island? Are there extra sets of sheets if the washer or dryer should fail when a guest is coming the next day?
yay! i haven't met them yet. I probably won't meet them until October at the earliest :). Yup, there are 2 sets of sheets, which is good as we have back to back guests over the next week :).
Great video. What sesame seeds do u use for tahini loos delicious
i got the bag from Costco online - i think it was about $18! super good price.
Ok, lots of guests, bears and wolves aside the really important question is,,,,, was crunchy or smooth peanut butter? ;-)
haha 😆… smooth!!
Can i ask how long have u done this job ? Im not sure i would be happy living with bears and wolves for too long and i haven't seen much sunshine there either .
I am going into my 4th winter here (It sure doesn't seem like it's been that long!). This summer was a very odd summer - lots of rain and fog. That's not typical. Bears and wolves don't bother me too much. They're not too interested in me. I worry more about Peach getting herself into trouble than anything :).
@@AmandaOffGrid I can get that ...I would be frustrated that they couldn't be the dog they are if that makes sense ... Final question 🤭 how long do U think U will do the job ?
i have no idea :)!! haha
@@AmandaOffGridright! or bring the trouble to you-smart. Also be wary of a non-threatening but too curious a bear however that follows you two. Glad you have the horn.
how big is the island? how close to other islands are you? and are there more than one lot on the island? ( if I can ask?) you really do have lots of wildlife in and around. if you set up some game cameras I bet you'd be surprised by what you don't/ haven't seen.
drop a line! get some fresh fish in the frig!
i do switch it out to a baseball cap if the day warms up. that morning it was about 8C. i always wear a hat b/c of tics - i do not want to get a tic in my head while under a tree splitting wood for sure! i think our high last week was 17C, but that was only 1 day. i am quite grateful for the cooler weather :)
@@AmandaOffGrid ?
hahah!! ohmygosh. you got someone elses reply. i must have typed it in the wrong box :).
Hi Amanda, I am Mike from new zealand, may I ask what the deal is with the air bnb. Im interested in in knowing what is like to be in a situation alone and offgrid.
Thank you.
Mike in New Zealand
Does Peach stay inside with you? I would love to live in nature but it scares me to be that close to wild animals. Nature is their home and I do not want to intrude. ❤
Yes, she is an indoor dog. With the wolves around she is inside quite a lot now, which is sad for her :(. We definitely live in harmony with the animals on the island. if we have bears visit we will generally go inside and let them feast on the dandelions in peace :).
@@AmandaOffGrid thank you 😊❤️🙏
Enjoyed the cooking segment. What would happen if the wolves took Peach? Would they kill her?
oh yes, for sure. they'd kill her. normally what they do is howl and the domestic dog will run to where they heard/smell them. the wolf will lead them on a chase and then his/her wolf buddies will show up and they'd take her out :(. coyotes do the same thing. i have to be extra careful as wolves will even attack a dog on leash. i am keeping peach around the cabin area... so if we see a wolf i can get her inside quickly.
@@AmandaOffGrid I hope they move on. That’s terrible
me too!!!
Hi wow that’s a bit scary ! Keep your dog near , they will and have your dog ear marked , what would their natural prey be on your the island ? Do they swim over and leave again? I would worry if their is no natural prey …. Your prepared at all times take care . Wildlife are always aware of human presence .. a trail cam could show the wildlife pattern. Both for your safety and biodiversity Count . 😊.
oh yes, they know she's here and i'm sure they're returning to try and lure her out. we do get a lot of deer on the property, but they only show up at night now, so the wolves aren't here for them at 6:30 in the morning. the owner did put a few trail cams up a couple weeks ago, but i'm not sure where. i might get my own. i am hoping they'll leave in the fall!
Scary😮
yes, sometimes it can be scary for sure!
Are the wolves living on the island, or do they swim from island to island in the summer?
you know, i'm not sure. i'm wondering if they even left. they're sea wolves so they do swim from island to island, but i'm not sure if they ever left from earlier in the summer/spring.
Do you think you will ever get back on your boat?
yes!!! absolutely!!! i'm not 100% sure when, but i will definitely get back on my boat!
I saw a report on Global today, that showed a Mamma and cubs that had swimmed across the bay, authorities say it's good that they are heading to their natural grounds? Stay safe! ua-cam.com/video/N4mdAx2ygHk/v-deo.htmlsi=6hL4UnTkni6I4zsd
