I should start filming my ride.... I've been a traveler for about 10 years...started out homeless after losing my business... decided to get out and travel and look for better opportunities elsewhere... ive mostly lived out of a hiking pack since hiking was always my thing... 1 year was spent strictly hitchhiking... 48 states and went i into bc Canada as well as down to the southern tip of baja... then I developed a route of seasonal jobs in my favorite places... started flying and taking buses... cars vans motorcycles.... hiked the Appalachian trail twice... countless 20 mile hikes seen pretty much all of the national parks and forests... I've always wanted to do a bike tour... but for all of these years on the road... I've had a 120lb Sr dog... so pulling her and gear just wasn't realistic... well she passed a little over a year ago... and now I have tcup chihuahua 😂 SO WE ARE OUT DOING IT RIGHT NOW... 🤣 learning as I go.. I haven't been on a bike in 35 years... I bought a salsa journeyer 650b... after flat number 30 in a week going from Alamosa Colorado to Santa fe New Mexico... I did a wheelset swap.. to a 700c x 28 tennis airless tire... rougher ride but... so far so good... I'm about to go from Santa fe NM to Quartzsite AZ for the winter and then up the 101 on the Westcoast in the spring all the way to Seattle... I need to start posting videos😂🤣 nice to see someone else out here living the life...
Possible helpful perhaps: They opened a new section of the Rock Island trail in The KC area. You will be meeting the Rock Island trail at Windsor on the Katy. The Katy has a decent website. Plenty of camping options along the Katy. If you're looking for a route through Kansas the BIKE ACROSS KANSAS BAK has maps of the route they use yearly. You just need to reverse it because you're going west. Also being told trail conditions on the KATY are outstanding this year.
Well my friend it's people like you that inspire others . I've just picked up a 520 fully loaded on the cheap .It came with all the panier racks and bags .New Orleans or bust this fall .New York to Nola .Did it three years ago on a Harley .Now it's going to be a matter of prepping .Ciao for now .🚴🚴🚴🌅🚴🚴🌅🚴🌅🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴
Awesome, sounds like you’re all set up. That would be a great ride. Not sure of your route, but check out The New River Trail. It runs north to south in VA, it’s very scenic, lots of bridges. Catch you on the road.
@@TravelingThru222 Yea ive heard of a few trails but now its time and money .I still got to get of all things my butt in shape .I need to invest in a better seat .The one that came on the bike is junk .
I rode the Katy ~5yrs ago and the coolest day was 99F, the rest over 100F. The trail was alright, not much along that one, I won't go out of my way to ride it again. Avoid it in the summer though, all the water is nasty and you won't be jumping in rivers like many other trails, so when it's hot out it really sucks. The Sparta trail in Wisconsin is only 30mi long but a must-see. If you get the chance to fly over to Australia, ride the Mawson trail and the the trail that crosses Tasmania, both of those are pretty epic.
@@TravelingThru222 Thanks. But not so much anymore. I seem to ride my bike more and more and skateboard less and less every year now that I'm old. Mostly just stop by the skatepark when I'm out riding and watch and chat nowadays. But knowing you skate and ride makes me like you even more..
Had a great time in Indiana, lots of bike trails to choose from. Looking forward to seeing what The Cardinal Greenway is all about. See you on the road.
Don't ride it when it's really hot out, best advice I can give you, and check trail conditions if in the spring, the river might flood out some parts of the trail
Cool! I live right by Switz City. Glad you enjoyed riding through Indiana. I found your channel today, and will stay following subscriber 👍 keep it up man.
Indiana was a great time. Planning on getting to that Cardinal Greenway in the near future hopefully. Theres a lot to see out there. Thanks for the sub, many many adventures to come.
Looking forward to seeing a video of you ok the Katy. Not sure if you like coffee but the Santa Fa Trails bike shop in Leavenworth KS has decent coffee. It may be out of your way and would put you into urban cycling conditions.
Had to do The Katy Trail while it is still the longest Rail Trail in America. Nebraska is planning on extending The Cowboy Trail from Valentine to the border, making it the longest Rail Trail, need to do that one too. Never ends, its a pretty great time to be alive with all the new bike trails in development. So many trails, so much to do.
Nice video, I have been planing a trip myself, starting off on a 1000 mile. I'm in average shape, but I haven't ridden bikes further than a couple miles in years, so I won't be in a rush. I would like to know a couple things about your ride if you could enlighten me; to give me a baseline of what someone who does this alot manages. About how many mph do you suppose you average? How many hours a day do you travel? And how many miles a day do you average? I googled and found that about 20 days, give or take, is average for 1000 miles, and you did over 1300 in 25 days, which I feel is pretty good time. I could do the math on miles per day you made, but I don't know the hours per day you ride, so that kills my figures lol.
Well, let’s see. I am an early bird, usually up before the sun, and definitely on the road before 7:00-8:00. I would say my average mph would be around 8. I do a lot of ride by shots, flying the drone and I really hang out a lot. But I ride all day, usually pushing dark because I love to ride at dusk. So my days are all day. I had no trouble riding 60-80 miles a day, again I don’t think I’m a fast rider, I just ride all day. If I wasn’t filming and stopping every ten minutes, I feel that I could have achieved 100 mile days fairly easy due to how light my load was. This was the first trip that I wasn’t physically exhausted after and even thought about riding back. I shaved a lot of weight off the bike, my tires weren’t nearly as worn as they usually are, and I really felt great. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Great trip you're on - I'd like to go west to east one day. About the dogs, do you just try to out pedal them? Or do you have a bat or hammer just in case of that "altercation"?
I rode from West to East a few years ago, equally as rewarding. However going East to West, left The West as a huge finale. Looking forward to riding across again, see you on the road.
The jacket is Enlightened Equipments Apex Torrid. It weighs in at 8 oz, and is a heat pump with a hood. I went with this to replace a fleece I had. Glad I made the decision, It is half the weigh of the fleece and 3 times as warm. The Apex will be with me on many trips to come. Hope you pick one up.
I've only been chased a few times over the years, but the last one was a gorilla sized dog out in farmlands surrounding Frankenmuth, MI. They had a huge very deep drainage ditch filled with cattails and tall weeds along the road, and the dog fell in the water and got mud bogged trying to clear it 😅
Yes sir, generally they might show up within the first 10 days. Then after that I’m usually good for the rest of the tour. I don’t carry or use any kind of lube for this. I barrel Thru.
@@TravelingThru222 Just curious what others experience. I commute about 4k per year and I get saddle sores around this time of year. I think the fabric against my skin is more important than the saddle. I’ve been on the same Brooks B17 for 4 years and I don’t ever wear cycle specific clothing or use lube. I going to try Cycleglide this season, but I am already dealing with my first saddle sore this season.
hi I live in Indiana would you consider helping me fix my gas house and stealth camping in it I can pay you need someone to help me fix it up like a cabin to camp in
They need to start putting these dog owners in jail when their animals hurt people. Especially pit bulls that maim and kill all the time. They say their dogs wont bite or hurt people. I say let's see how willing they are to stand by that statement if their freedom is on the line. I carry a 2 ft. piece of electric service cable as a club so a dog better hope it doesn't get that close to me but it shouldn't have to come to that. Thinking about getting a cattle prod. I would carry something dude.
Glad that you've been problem free. Watching your GDMBR videos right now. I guess your more worried about bears than dogs now. Lol. We had a woman here in southern Ohio get attacked by 3 pitbulls while riding back roads and had to have a leg amputated so it's got me salty. Thanks for the reply and cant wait for your next adventure

Yeah not bad mileage for being under the weather and grumpy. Good days bad days. Indiana really had some nice riding, and some quick doggies.
