264 miles sounds like a super great week to me. Old cycling guy here in Ireland loving your videos. Recon I’ll never get to tour in the US but these films are the nearest and great. Happy trails.

Just taking my time, always. I spend so much time thinking about bike touring when Im home and back at work, that when I finally make it back on tour I find it very easy to relax and be present in the situation without that whole "I got to get there", semi-competitive attitude. Ive been on bike tours with deadlines, and dates I had to be back by, and it kinda throws off my head game. If at all possible I try to travel open ended and the willingness to be open to direction change, no set schedule, and where ever the highway points me next. To me thats whats its all about. Hope to catch you out there Weezle.
Here’s our story of cycling Missouri from St. Louis to West Coast. We got some cycling maps from Missouri DNR that were just beautiful, all the roads color coded for safety. Flooding was heavy that Spring so we headed south thru Potosi. The maps were total fantasy. There wasn’t a safe cycling road down there. We would divert to get on “safe” roads only to find heavy high speed traffic with no shoulders, just drainage on the side. Walked half way across the state on SR 8 to Rolla. So glad to see Missouri has begun to develop its bike structure. Still for me, Missouri has some of the most dangerous cycling roads I’ve ever ridden. Narrow, high speed, rolling hills, and lots of narrow turns and no shoulders. Stunningly beautiful place but not a cycling paradise.
That sounds like a tough one, hard for me to not like Missouri because I was on The Katy Trail the entire way across the state. The roads I did ride, were super quiet and very nice. Thanks for watching.
Didn’t expect a reply but you got me thinking about our cycling adventures crossing Missouri. I looked at the states newest cycling route map and it is still showing Hwy 8 as being a moderately safe route. It is really treacherous. When we arrived in Rolla the woman at the motel shuddered when we told her we rode 8. We have lots of family in Missouri so we go back there often. The roads are still not cycling friendly. That is why we are happy to see the Katy being developed. It also shows a change in the mentality of citizens of the state. It is a conservative place where it can take a good deal of persuasion to gain acceptance of something new. To see the number of cyclist increasing is encouraging. Because as we all know, seeing the world by bike is the greatest. Keep your vids coming. We enjoy them immensely.
Summer June 2021 so much rain!.... trail washed out and even went under water, had to get off at Jefferson City and get back on at Sadelia. Was enjoyable when, it wasn't raining blinding torrents..no regrets🙂 tho
Hey, St. Charles is a great place, right along The Missouri. Thats awesome you have access to this amazing trail everyday. Its hard to pinpoint which section of the trail was my favorite, just had a really great time out there. Stay tuned for Kansas.
Lived 5 great years in St.Louis. The Katy was just a little path along the Missouri back then. So glad to see it turned into what it is today. These great trails are a treasure.
Nice to see you checking out the Katy. I'm not much of a bicycle Rider but I want to be for the week it would take me to get across. Looking to park near the beginning and ride the train back from Sedalia. Can't wait to see the rest of this trail on your journey.
Awesome, you're going to have a great time out there. Theres not much out at the eastern terminus. Might have to park in St. Charles and take a shuttle up to Machens. Some people start in St. Charles though. Have a great trip. More Katy Videos coming soon.
@@TravelingThru222 I'm nervous about not being an experienced of a rider. I do thousands of miles every year on motorcycles, which uses some of the same muscle groups but my conditioning for bicycling isn't as good as it should be.
What up I am from Montréal Québec And i would like to hit these trails. I see you are a simple and humble guy. I like that 2. I hope u will come to Canada to hit some nice trails 2.
Hopefully you're getting lots of solar and enjoying the Katy. You're going to be able to eat like a king along the trail. TEBIDS is a Highly Suggested stop Hostel, Showers Bed Kitchen and Low price.
I’m currently biking across America and my route doesn’t go through the Katy Trail. I feel I might have to change my route. I’ve been told it was a beautiful trail. I did the GAP on my trip and I enjoyed it. So I’ll figure that out. Amazing video!
You won't regret detouring to ride Americas longest Rail Trail, a week of no cars, no dogs, and not worrying about shoulders. If you can swing it, The Katy is well worth it. I rode 144 miles of The C&O this year on my way out west. Seems like we are going the same way. At the end of The Katy is the town of Clinton, Then if you ride to Osawatomie Kansas, straight west, that starts The Flint Hills Nature trail, longest trail in Kansas, seventh longest trail in the country. Its about 100 miles long and so beautiful. Hope this helps you on your trip. Let me know how it goes. But I cant speak highly enough of The Katy Trail. See you on the road.
I didn’t know about the Tulsa trail, maybe I’ll check that out sometime. Thanks for the tip. The Midwest is massively developing bike routes, I was shocked when I rode across. Can’t wait to get back out there. See you in the trail.
The Katy was such a great ride. looking forward to doing it again. 23mm should work fine, if you get around squishy areas you might run into issues. The Katy Trail is hard packed crushed limestone, you should be fine. Hope to see you out there.
@@TravelingThru222 Thanks! It is my goal to eventually ride the thousands of miles of rail trails in the midwest. I am in OH so I don't know how long til I have time to make it to MO
Does this trail have electrical outlets (say, in nearby towns, or bathrooms)? (For charging one’s battery or batteries.) Addendum: some *are* shown near the end. The chief issue, then, is finding an outlet every twenty to forty miles, as well as power where one crashes for a night…
GAP trail continues into the C&O trail, together they're 355 miles. The only reason it's not "longer" is they're not considered the same trail even though they meet.
Yeah, some say its a boring trip. Its definetly a lot of trail. Its basically flat, The first half follows the Missouri River which makes things interesting and also has large bluffs, the western half, say from Columbia to Clinton is like cornfields. But beautiful sunsets and sunrises, plus longest rail trail in America as of now. The Cowboy Trail in Nebraska is scheduled to extend to the longest trail. The Katy is worth riding, but Yes, there are more exciting trails. I cant wait to ride it again.
@@TravelingThru222 Thanks for the info. I have done the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Towpath Trail which were both great. Maybe I will do the Katy or the Erie Canalway Trail next!
I was on The Katy at the end of April, had some chilly nights for sure. The coat Im wearing replaces a Patagonia Fleece I always wore, but I found this Enlightened Equipment Apex Torrid that is way warmer and half the weight, plus it had a hood. The coat is more a backpacking item, but it will be with me on many trips to come.
Hi. What is your opinion on people who use recumbents bicycles to go bike touring? I'm asking because I have a 3-wheel recumbent bike with electric assist.
I say if it makes you feel free and you feel good when you ride it, Then thats good enough. 3 Wheeler with electric assist, sounds like one sweet, laid back, chilling cruise to me. Personally Ive never thought about owning one, standard bicycle just works for me. I see no problem with anybody riding anything they want. Hope to see you on the road sometime.
Actually the Katy trail goes from Clinton Mo to Machens, Mo 237.7 miles. There is a spur trail - The Rock Island Spur that goes from Pleasant Hill Mo just west of Kansas City Mo (47.5miles) to the Katy Trail. Sept 2020 I ran the entire length on foot from Clinton to Machens in 3 days 10 hours. Great experience.
I rode the Trans -Am 2018 and took a detour to ride the full length of the Katy Trail the most boring part of my ride sorry each to there own. Give me the Rockies any day.

It still does run on that corridor from Clinton,MO to KS
