My mother’s mom’s family was from Yorkshire and immigrated to the US. A love of all things Yorkshire was inculcated in my mom and her sibs as well as my sibs and me. Mom and one of her brothers visited there(West Riding) often but always visited York too where other ancestors had lived. Jokingly I began to call it “God’s own country” because Mom raved it about it so often. Imagine my delighted surprise when I became friends with a native of Yorkshire who told me that the Yorkshire natives also refer to it as “God’s own country”! This is a very interesting history of my ancestors. Thanks.🙏
@@mr.briton365 Nice one. You'll love it there. Beautiful city. If you like old pubs? I recommend the Kings Arms (below micklegate bridge)... proper old school. But no phones. Keep them silent. The blue bottle... smallest bar in York. Proper nice beers. The three tuns... lovely and good alternative staff.
I decided on a sneaky trip to York. Only planned on making an hour long vid... but got so much footage. Right. Pt 2 - post Rome to viking Pt 3 - medieval to tudor Pt 4 - enlightenment to Georgian Pt 5 - victorian to modern But.... I've also got 3 more vids 1. York castle (Clifford's) 2. York minster 3. Whitby Abbey As well as Henry pt 6 Going to be a busy month 👍
All of my family history men going back 13 generations have YORK name. At some point the name came about, anyone tell me where this York family came from
Probably because they lived in, or were associated with the city of York. Many people had last names associated with towns and cities. Could have been a noble title. This would be better looked into by an onomatologist. Either way, sounds very interesting.
Great work. York is one on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing this with us.
@brassteeth3355 a fantastic city. Absolutely brilliant.

Great beer and good food.
It's like Hobbiton.
