Your words resonated with me today. Perhaps Covid has made us all appreciate what we have. Several years ago we downsized to a condo that backed to a heavily wooded area. It is like we are on vacation everyday. I gardened a little in my old house. I now have a curved strip beside the driveway and garage that curves around to the side of our condo. It is just a perfect size for me and I enjoy it everyday! There s huge difference by keeping a garden daily and getting to know your plants. I am grateful that I found this enjoyment in my retirement. 💕

Lots of wise words you spoke! It is good to be content and wonderful to enjoy things other places, because we can't have it all! I garden in mostly shade and sometimes I see sun loving plants that I would love to have. But I remind myself to enjoy and appreciate those plants when I am out and about!

Aww I just absolutely loved this video on so many dimensions and did not want it to end. Don't accept second best in your garden. Be the boss of your garden. Happiness is contentment. Have a new perspective after being away. Also your radiance and glow talking about your son's wedding and lucky for him to go on a honeymoon in Greece. In Australia our borders are still closed for international travel until July 2022. But most of all I got very teary when I saw darling Goose. She is very lucky to have you look after her. In January I had to say goodbye to my 12 year old beautiful yellow labrador, Sugar. She was my garden buddy and followed me wherever I went. When I was in the front garden people would stop and talk to her - she was well known in the neighbourhood. I think adult/older dogs are good in the garden, but puppies are garden 'destroyers.' Congratulations and thank you for always sharing not just your garden wisdom but also your life wisdom. Much appreciated. Love from sunny Sydney, Australia.

4 years ago we had a 90 lbs. golden retriever, he was a doll. Never hurt anything in the yard. Then 3 years ago we got a Cava (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) and golden doodle. She is only 60 lbs. She does some 'zoomies' in the yard, but, not all that much. She's never hurt a thing. She is the sweetest, smartest animist gentle of our life with dogs ever. 'Goose' is such a darling. Glad you are getting some grand-pup time. Your daughter-in-law much feel so Blessed to have you in her life now. Love your 'who's the Boss' of your garden -- so true and something to remind ourselves!! Made me laugh though... CONGRATUALATIONS TO ALL on the marriage! love, hugs, prayers.

Linda love your refreshed perspective of your garden. It is nice to get away to see and experience different scenery, but always good to come back home to ones garden and home. I find the most difficult part of gardening to show restraint. All the pretty flowers can be tempting, but they don't fit into the look and feel that I want for my garden. I just need to enjoy them at the store and at other's garden. I need to stick with my vision; clean, tidy, manageable with drifts of color.

Like your new attitude! I agree with you ! I like my small garden too. Its all I can handle at my age. It will be fun to add new types of plants. My garden is a little smaller than yours. This is my second year so I still have plenty of more plants to add. I move some of my plants around in pots to keep my interest. I love design. I, like you, have always liked being the best at what I do. Same with my garden. By the way, your garden gets more beautiful as time goes by!😊 8 or 9 Texas

You are such a good communicator. Not just of gardening techniques, but also of the thoughts and emotions that your garden space evokes. I'm a new gardener, and I have learned so much from you. You hit the nail on the head with the word "contentment". Thanks for sharing your “new eyes”. I found myself not loving somethings I was tending in my garden that I just don’t love. Even my husband had said “ you need more color”. And he was right. I actually yearned for more and found it was the spark my beds needed. I have been shopping Lowe’s sales a,one with other garden centers for sale perennials and getting a little giddy at the thought of freedom of it. I had planted my gazebo area with daylillies I have collected over the last 25 years. This year I struggled with loving them because they just were not giving me the impact I wanted. A big decision because there are at least 50 there but their time is up with me. So lots of fall gardening ahead for me and excited for changes. Thanks again for sharing something we rarely admit to ourselves. More is sometimes not better. The best I’d always the best! Happy Gardening.!

I've never gardened without dogs or cats. I was lucky enough to grow up with pets and have had my own sine college. I do most of my gardening inside a huge fenced yard that was fenced specifically for them. And then I garden beyond the fence into the woods and the front yard. My dogs range in size from 18#s to 90#s. And yes, they sometimes crash through the perennials breaking stems and branches. But my garden is not that manicured, so it isn't a big issue--at least, not for me. The dogs are not above stealing a strawberry or fig--although the wild birds are greater fruit thieves.. The pets bring a level of joy to the garden akin to having children in the space. They notice every single new thing and delight in it. Which increases my joy. And they help keep vermin down so that we don't lose as many tulips to moles/voles/shrews, as many hostas to deer, as many daisies to rabbits. It's their garden as much as mine...it wouldn't feel like my garden without them.

I moved to an established house and garden and after a six month moratorium cut down 50 plus old English boxwood and probably 40 small leaved azalea. Took out all foundation planting. The house sits under 26 100ft pines in eastern NC. These shrubs had become tabletops for the long pine needles that fall most of the year. I moved the gardens out and away from the house so I could see them from the windows. The pines still shed but I’m not raking needles off plants. I also plant what works and what I love. Goose is such a good dog! Jd

Congratulations on your recent joy 💛. And oh yes we have a GIANT dog, a
Pyrenees Mountain Dog who was rescued from a southern kill shelter in 2014. He was a farm failure and got dumped. A rescue group transported him north. Evidently he likes being with people more than livestock. We fell in love with the French dog of kings! We trained him to do his business on a wood chip area that lines the perimeter of our property (backs up to woods). He's out when we are busy gardening, trimming, digging, up to our eyeballs in mulch or occasionally sitting (lol, with a cocktail). We monitor him so he doesn't dig or walk through the beds. As far as dogs go he's well mannered and likes to sleep in the shade. Your grand doggie is adorable and has some talent! 😊

To answer both questions - I have two dogs and we recently fenced in our whole yard and they went crazy loving the freedom. This made me realize they will trample the new garden area I was creating...solved that by putting in a 3 ft picket fence. It was a win win because I protect my plants, gives the area structure, looks adorable and cottegy, and the dogs still get to run around.😊 As far as day lillies...I'm kind of getting over them too. I have quite a few and they bloom profusely, but afterwards the leaves start to brown up like yours. I think it's truly the heat and humidity (7a) that make them start to look sad. I don't know that I want to spend the time cleaning them up. I have so many things planned for that area that I want to keep plants that are "exceptional" as you said. Good to know I'm not the only one looking at my garden with new glasses.😊

Those other plants hide the unsightly brown leaves the Stella’s develop, but had it not been a happy accident that others disguise it, I’d be tempted to replace them too. Linda your garden is exceptional. I remember a comment was made last year by someone about why a garden didn’t have more color. Your garden is grand and you need to keep it exactly as your style and what you love. BTW I grew up in Northern California. All of those states with cool nights and warm days and lower humidity will always have beautiful flowers. Portland Oregon leads the pack. But living in the south is so hot and humid. Our summers don’t support those mountain flower types. I love structure as well. Keep on with your garden style and we will continue to admire.

Hello, Linda, I’m a follower from Cumbria (UK) and have a fairly small cottage garden with 3 lawns. I have two small dogs and have trained them to keep out of the flowerbeds using a reward system. They were also trained to ‘leave’ the fledgling birds in the garden and will watch them from a few feet away. I bought Dog Rocks from Amazon that neutralise their urine so I have no marks on my lawn. These are left in their water bowl and changed every two months. They don’t dig holes but my friends’ dog started making a mess so she found distracting him with a Kong filled with peanut butter helped.
When my boys were little we had a cat and a litter tray for her was left outside under cover. She lived 18.5 years and NEVER used the flowerbeds as her toilet.
LOVE Goose. And hope to see more of him…..one of my dogs is a rescue. I went over to Northern Ireland on the ferry for him, so Goose is a marvellous and very welcome addition to your video 👩‍🌾💚🐶

You go, Girl! I dug up all of my daylilies last year for the same reason! I put them out by our road with a free sign so others could give them a new home.

I get it, Linda. I was away from home alot taking care of my mom last year when I came home, walked thru my garden gate & thought how beautiful & tropical my backyard looked & how fortunate I felt as I brushed by a huge banana tree & held the giant leaf in my hand as I stopped to look around.
I would prefer to live in a coastal town but that isn’t in the cards, so since we are in zone 8a, I still can have a tropical looking yard by planting things that can survive in my zone & still be happy & able to be “the boss.” Lol

One of the commands I taught grand dog corgis is “come out” if they get into flower beds they can hurt or trample. They also know what things are no no’s for peeing

We have three Scottish Terriers who are vigilant in their protection of our property from any perceived threat (rabbits, squirrels, deer, fox, opossums, UPS delivery folks, neighborhood dogs and cats, etc.). I have one very old and huge boxwood under which all three can disappear at one time. My future backyard retirement garden beds (currently under contemplation) will most likely contain items which do not provide hiding spots for the dogs and will allow me to maintain them without a lot of kneeling. The dogs tend to create “runways” along the fence lines so that is also a consideration as I plan. Goose is adorable! Our dogs’ only trick is a three-part howling harmony when the phone rings. 🤣

Congrats once again, Linda! Love this walk about, especially those special thoughts. You have so many common senses, which really resonate with me. It is so easy to want planting everything that looks pretty in somebody's else garden. However, we all have our own gardens. It is so important to create our own signature garden that makes us happy. One of the key points you bring home that is really resonate with me is to showcase more of the ones that are doing exceptional well in our own gardens and repeat them. I have started that concept without realizing what I was doing until now. I simply did it subconsciously. Thanks for another enjoyable walk about. Be blessed!

I had two Saint Bernards, over 300 pounds of dog running through my backyard. Gardening was a challenge ensuring all poisonous plants were removed and sturdy pet friendly plants put in. They are gone now, tromping through safe gardens in doggy heaven, and I have started to introduce new plants. I miss them every day especially seeing them walk up to flowers and smell them. It was always so sweet!

Awe...that’s so sweet Linda, Congratulations on being rewarded a daughter-in-law since you have sons. Loved your whole video on how you’re appreciating what you have and being content. Change the things you have control over and make life easier and less stress and work on yourself. I love how you have a grand puppy, I have 3 since I had to put my own to sleep last year. My grand puppy that stays with me pees sometimes on the grass so I have to hose it off, otherwise the grass will turn yellow. Enjoy the rest of your time with Goose.🐶

Four barn cats. Every tree has tree protectors to avoid shredded bark. So trees i bought because of the beautiful bark are not showing as well. Also the lawn does not show as well because i will not use herbicide or bug killer due to the cats. But I absolutely love having all the cat help and love while working in the gardens.

I have my 5 outdoor cats that I love so much. They like to be with me until it gets hot, then off for a nap! They do not destroy any of my plants, love to lay in the shade of them. Can't imagine being out there without them. I too agree, that I just want to maintain the plants I have for now and make them perfect. I love your house and gardens.

LOVE this! Your dress is lovely! I almost fell off my chair laughing when you were asking Goose to do her tricks...my dog was off to the side: Standing up, sitting, offering his paw, rolling over...the whole entire bit! Congratulations to your son and new daughter on their wedding! It is wonderful that you were able to attend and enjoyed it so much! I love my garden and every year, I try a new plant. This year's new plant is an Olive tree. It is doing great and I just love the leaf structure!

I love your philosophy, Linda, on how to appreciate what we see in other gardens away from home, and not feel the need to replicate in our own gardens. Thank you for your videos. I have a really good size backyard and a medium size front yard. And I have a 37 pound Australian Shepherd. The toughest part of trying to figure out where to plant in my backyard is mapping out where my dog runs when I throw the frisbee. I didn’t wanna put any plants in her path. This might be TMI but when she was younger there was a bit of a digging problem after planting plants in the backyard. And I found out all you have to do is put some of their poop where they have been digging and they will leave it alone. You can’t tell it’s there because you just use a small piece and it just gets mixed in with the mulch basically.
