I did it, I ordered a small blue point juniper from Home Depot. Going to try it in a pot, my local big box plant stores are hours away. Free Shipping.Hoping it arrives healthy, so far, all the plants I ordered have. I want a little pine tree in a pot. Your garden is inspiring, you have made me look at plant's foliage differently. Your words wax poetic. Thank you, have a safe trip and fun with your boys...we will all be here waiting for your return.

Got my Blue point juniper from Home Depot today, if your subscribers want any, they are available at Home Depot online for around 16.00 free delivery. They arrive already the size of a topiary. It's perfect. I am in zone 4-5 b, and it will do well in a pot here. Planting it tomorrow.

Always so many last minute things for a gardener to do before leaving on a trip. Glad you have house sitters who will take care of your property while you are so far away. Know that will put your mind at ease. I am excited for you and your family on your Far East adventure. You will have such a fabulous time. Children’s weddings are so exciting. Enjoy to the fullest, know you will! Many blessings to all.

I also had an Emerald and for all the world you would have thought it was a goner. One whole side and a third of the top died. It was 5 feet tall and the two on either side were fine. I cut out the dead and left it. Two years later you would never now it had ever had problem. So rewarding ❤️❤️❤️

Hello Linda. That's one impressive garden and an excellent video. My favorite method of maintaining a nice garden, sustainable pantry and stockpiling items long term for the whole family is what I consider to be the most practical, utilizing every type of food storage methods and technology available, both old and new. . Except for the fruits and vegetables that get canned, I keep perishable items like meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products in the refrigerator on a short term basis until I'm ready to use them for a big family meal - and for even longer term sustainable storage, a large separate freezer, which can store a half side of beef with plenty of room left over for homemade ice cream etc. . I'm considering upgrading to a walk-in freezer at some point.in the near future, if my plans to open a bed and breakfast come to fruition. Sometimes, however a nice round of cheese can do well for quite awhile on a pantry shelf at room temperature - and doesn't mind even if it has to stand there alone. Store bought canned goods get shelves.in the large pantry closet - several for canned meat like corned beef hash, spam and sandwich spread and another for canned vegetables Bread, rolls, grains, homemade pasta, cereals and the like are stored in special humidity controlled bins I order from Amazon Prime - which usually get delivered to my doorstep about an hour after I order them. . Stuff from the family garden and orchard, like onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, pumpkins, carrots, corn celery,, potatoes and yams, cherries, blueberries and strawberries get canned in Mason Jars and stored in the cool, root cellar of this wonderful rambling former farmhouse (circa 1867) I share with my extended blended family and several rambunctious dogs raised on table scraps from the some of the finest food from a plethora of sources both commercial and home based. . There's even a special separate "summer kitchen" which I converted to store butter and ice cream churns, pots, pans, utensils, extra storage containers, foil, bags, cutlery, and other meal related accoutrement. Out back in the woods, just beyond the big pile of wood I maintain all year, (for use in an antique woodstove I keep on hand, in case the power goes out) there's even an old rusting vintage still where my great grandfather made some of the finest corn whiskey for miles. Next to it is the rusting hulk of the Ford Model A he used to transport that powerful hootch by the light of the moon on soft summer nights to his eager customers in a tri-county area. Further into this verdant forest of mostly sycamore, oak, pine and scrub, runs a cool stream into which I occasionally cast a rod or net to catch some Brook Trout, Bluntnose Shiners, or whatever takes the bait (just earthworms for the most part). And yes, hunting season means wild turkey, deer, and even an occasional wild boar. Next week, I'm planning on filing for a permit to 3-D print a smokehouse in order to be able to create gourmet artisan handcrafted, beef, bacon, turkey, and beef stick jerky, which interested local merchants can private label for other people to share with their families and their family dogs. Unfortunately, I had to break the bad news to my free range hens today that due to expected egg shortages regretfully numbered are their days of laying a couple of eggs and then basically taking the rest of the day off with ranging privileges' within the parameters of a few very nice rural acres - parts of which are rich with fat grubworms. There's even a short dirt road between the main barn and the farmhouse which they're free to cross to get to the other side as often as they'd like. My rooster Ben overheard me and he ain't too happy either, knowing full well that due to oncoming egg shortages, he'll be "workin' overtime to make sure there's plenty of eggs for the family and I.

I had problems with squirrels until a stray tom cat decided to live in my back yard. I feed him and he stays, and the squirrels do not get into my bird feeders, bird suet bricks, or bird baths anymore. Didn't think I wanted an outside cat ( Zone 7 so winters are not too extreme in southern western kentucky) but it is worth it to get rid of squirrels. Squirrels were even hanging on my hummingbird feeders, to drink the sugar water, and dumping all the water out of them and taking them to the ground. What a nuisance.

@@donnamullins2089 I also have a big hawk in my neighborhood, and it also feeds on the rabbits, who have eaten my small holly bushes and will eat the new growth on hydrangea and hosta in the spring. To be living in " town ", I have several critters to deal with. Sounds like you did all the work for your critters, you gathered up all the food for them. If they were smart, they would have dug it all out and stored it somewhere for the winter. You can trap the squirrels in a live trap, using cheap salted peanuts as bait. Then relocate. Or so I've heard.....

Hi Linda, I have heard some negative about Lomi, mostly that it is really dehydrated not compost and when wet it rehydrates and smells and has too much nitrogen. Just be careful it can damage your plants especially young ones. If I got one I may put the Lomi material in my outdoor compost to further breakdown. Wish I had wild growing junipers. I am nurturing a loripedlum that popped up. Safe travels!

She knows you or would not have built so close to your back door. I may just get the loomy but I am not sure how it works. Maybe a show on that and how to make compost tea ? See you soon! Now I have something to put on my Christmas wish list....a Lomi composter....enjoyed your content. I am in Zone 5 and in the planter on the front of your house on the porch I would be putting a faux petite Christmas tree....it gets to -20F here during parts of the winter. I have squirrels also eating anything they can get a hold of...but what I have been having in my yard is an 8 point buck chasing the 7-9 doe running around. They were here all day (he does not get tired!) so I could not go out and walk as he can be aggressive. And this too shall pass!

Hi Linda! I love my Lomi too! If you read the directions you are supposed to mix the compost 1 part to ten parts dirt. Using the compost straight will cause some mold. Also the best garden compost doesn’t include cooked leftovers. I could be wrong but in my studies for Lomi this is what I have found.

Alaska's state bird is the mosquito , kidding, but they have swarms of them, and one Alaskan vlogger said this works for her but it takes about half an hour to really get rid of them. last fall, I had a wonderful topiary made with a rosemary plant. Brought it inside for the winter, and I guess I let it get too dry. Seems like in just one day, it was dry and had brown leaves falling off, and I watered it right away and kept closer watch on the moisture level and there was no saving it. It was making such a mess, dropping those needle leaves, that I gave up. So myrtle, and I will add Rosemary, do not like to get dry. If they let you know that they are dry, then it's too late to save them.

Squirrels have two litters a year. One in March and one in August. Young squirrels give birth to two babies. But older squirrels can give birth to up to eight babies. Here in Michigan, they are a nightmare. One pregnant squirrel came down my chimney in September. She got out and destroyed my home while I was in the hospital. Another squirrel was inside my dryer. I had a heart attack when I opened it. He ran all over my home and hid in my beautiful clothes closet. It costs about $400 to have a squirrel trapped and removed from inside your home here. Your squirrel was building a nest for her litter or getting ready for winter. Squirrels have chewed my wicker chairs, my wooden window sills and my wood gazebo and slept in my beautiful large porch wreath. Their teeth constantly grow so they are always chewing. Keep them away from your power boxes. I spray deer repellant. It works for awhile as a deterrent. On any given day, I have over twenty squirrels in my yard. We are in an area with very old established oak trees. Some are over 75 years old. They are squirrel condominiums!

Ok, I have to ask, at 13:33 what are you saying? "Faux guah pots"? I've heard you reference these pots before but what are you calling them?

Please secure electrical box squirrels will eat electrical wiring. Even if you drive your car everyday they will try to nest. Cost me $358 dollars to replace my blower motor. and was it a mess. Full of acorns and carp! Yuck.

I’m fortunate that we have many birds of prey. I’ll see a squirrel and know that I will not see it the next day.
