Love Tom’s channel. He is just the nicest guy. We need more Tom’s in this world.
It's exciting to see that you've hired Thing from the Adams Family to reach in and help you carry a seat or pull a steering column!
😂😂😂
Dig Dug is quickly becoming my new favorite UA-cam off-road rig.
Really hope he hits it with a good paint job
Quality and pride of work!
It's gonna be nice, but the Moorvair (I probably spelled that wrong) is so cool.
As a metric user, here's a hot tip. All types of builders work in millimetres or meters, not centimetres, only dress makers work in centimetres. Loving following your journey Tom. Cheers from Oz
Exactly Josh! Last time I actually used cm was in grade school. Millimeters is the best way to avoid measurement issues as well as faster than dealing with 64th's and 32nd's. Especially when your apprentice is adding things up. 😂
Pay no attention to the man behing the curtain!
Thanks for showing your metal storage. I have some thing not quite as nice but similar with bins and racks and my wife is like “why are you keeping this? 😅
I was afraid you were going to start driving on the left side of the road. I'm glad you came to your senses.
I was a foreman of a pipe fitting crew assembling a combined cycle boiler for a power plant that was designed and built in Europe but we were doing the final assembly in the U S. All the drawings were in metric and I had never had to use the metric system except for my teachers telling me as kid we’re the only country that uses standard so you’ll need to know the metric system. That was 40 years ago. I discovered the Construction Master! Converts metric to standard very nicely!
I remember back in the seventies they said that America was going to switch to metric. That didn't work out as planned !
@stephentaylor280 Indeed! In 1972, we were told by our teachers that the USA was going to convert to metric in 10 years. I use metric a lot in my job as an engineer for a power brush / grinding wheel manufacturer that was bought out by a German company. And it is funny that we will make a 6" dia grinding wheel that is actually 150mm and a 125mm dia wheel actually 5". The marketing folks that decide that don't really have clue.
It would be easier if we went fully metric intead of the mixed mess we have now. Metric is easy to understand, it's the conversion to SAE that can be challenging for some. Conversion would be mostly unnecessary if we flipped. There would be legacy products and systems that would need to be supported for some time so will be unable to go exclusively metric. That requirement will diminish in time.
Tom Tom, I am 67 and born into the Imperial System here in the UK. While at school, Metric came in and I have a foot in both camps. To this day I may measure one side of a piece of work in inches and the other in cm. When it comes to temperature, I use Centigrade when it's cold and Fahrenheit when it's hot.
I love that our tapes have both, so you can choose which is closest to what you want, you go to cut something 25mm wide by 4 inches long.
US tape measures - imperial only , UK measures imp & metric , euro measures - metric only (!) I've tried leaving UK tapes with my US friends to help them out. @@twotone3070
Veeeeery well done Tom. Much respect Brother
Tom, You are quite the metal fabricator! I like seeing how your mind perceives things and watch all the pieces come together. My mind gets stuck on other things. Like how many times you said "good" when you replaced the steering knuckle. LOL. This video was GOOD.
Tom, one friendly pointer, I clicked this video to see a Wagoneer wheeling in Utah, because, you know, the title said that's what the video was about, not working on your truck. This phenomenon is really common on YT over the last few years, so I can understand, but perhaps make this 2 videos, 1 about the work on Dig Dug and one about the Wagoneer in Utah. Glad to see your channel grow, keep up the good work!
TomTom is a kick*ss person with a kick*ss channel !!!
I like his attitude.
It's a fairly rare day that I don't use the 25.4mm/1" conversion at least once. I like dial calipers for simplicity, but a good digital that displays decimal inch or metric at the push of a button is a mighty nice feature and well worth the occasional button battery.
Such a joy to watch Tom, you do such good, clean work!
I've always thought that it was the auto maker's job to make vehicles too complicated for the average Joe to work on, but it looks like you could teach them a thing or two. I look forward to every step you make on Dig Dug. Keep it coming.
You’re Professor Tom to me going forward 😎 the way you narrate what you’re doing is awesome.
Neat to learn a meter is not based on ye olden meter stick anymore. It is funny how an inch is based on the same thing. We are all using the same system with weird conversions haha. Thanks for the fun video!
Aussie here. When using the metric system in fabrication/construction we dont actually use centimetres (cm). We go from millimetres (mm) to metres (m).
So its either a 420mm bar, or a 0.42m bar.
I like the way you pack a lot in 30 minutes no messing around.
Love how you explain what you are doing. I learn a lot watching you.
English Engineer here. We don't use centimetres, but millimetres, the width of a pencil or marker. Seamstresses use centimetres as it is the convenient width of a seam. Engineers, of which you are a particularly talented one, use millimetres, or if it is bigger, metres .Love the Channel.
Hello TOM TOM The WIZARD of 4X4 s having a great time
You da MAN, Tom Tom! Keep following your passion.
You have a lot of patience or your wife does editing...Love your videos Tom Tom dig dug is coming along nice...great stuff
Thank you!
I love how you teach/tell what you are doing!
I am really enjoying your channel, I like how you explain how and what you’re doing on Dig Doug. I don’t know anything so I learn a lot about fabrication and thinking a little more about thinking outside the box. So thanks Tom Tom!
P.S. I love the Sema Wagoneer, Wagoneer is my dream ride..
Can't wait till tom tom hits a million subscribers!
There is a 19thC warehouse in Antwerp where the Industrial Archaeologists couldn't figure out the dimensions in metric. On remeasuring the building in feet and inches it worked out fine. They reckon the cast iron parts we shipped from the UK and the rest made to fit!
Love the science going on... precision and SIA... and rock crawling...
As usual, great step-by-step guidance, great insight into your thought process, and just fun to watch. Go Tom Tom.
As a native metric user, why did my brain immediately convert it back to freedom units? thanks from Australia!
You must have been taught imperial first,or how did you know ? I was in UK, still eyeball in it, metric is for kitchen fitters.
Funny, seems I'm not the only one, YT must be trying to brainwash us to go imperial :-D Cheers from Belgium!
I have an idea. The U.S. will begin to use the Metric system as soon as England drives on the correct side of the road.
So, what's a cubic ton of water in "freedom units" then?
I knew 50.8mm is 2.0in.
Love Tom AND it was really funny to watch an engineer take apart his work. Welcome to the lovely life as a technician. "Whelp that doesn't make sense" answer it was cheaper/easier. again love you Tom and nothing but the best. Just made me laugh
Im not sure what the final plans of the build are, but where the rock slider come out past the body and there is a big gap between the slider and the bed, that could be a great spot for a storage box on each side of the rig and would fill that odd gap.
That new steering part really is 11% better 😅
Some people would say it's 1/9th better.😉
Looking good. Maybe the new instrument panels can be smaller segments that would facilitate removal and replacement instead of one large panel. You have that nice CNC plasma cutter going now. :)
Yeah, Canadian here. I built trains in metric and do carpentry in feet. When you tell young people here to cut a board 2' long you get a blank stare. "Is that a thing?"
@robertfarrar9411. Van Isle carpenter here. I use metric for layout and anything plan related (industrial) and imperial for lumber cuts. 😊
Wood and Imperial go together like bread and butter.
Brit living in America, taught in metric, when everything sold when I was going up was imperial, the I moved to the US where it's standard ;) until you work on anything and it's half metric.
If you buy a bar or tube of beeswax for cutting tools your hole saws will last twice as long. It also works great for bandsaws.
what about drill bits?
@@TXH1138👍
As great as the old full sized Wagoneers look they still look like an altered dragster with the rear axle moved forward from a side view.
Goliath is an amazing restoration.
Your videos keep getting better and better. Keep up the good work.
Wooo Hooo! I'm glad the tape has found some use! The big step will be going from centimeters, which we Canadians only use for our height on our drivers license, to Millimeters, which is the easiest way to measure. 1 cm = 10 mm. 43 centimeters = 430 mm. Between 43 cm and 44 cm there is nothing but dead air, but in mm its 430, 431, 432....440. Not that you didn't know that Tom, because I know you're way smarter than me. Thanks for playing along with the metric gag 😉 Keep up the good work. I Luv my UA-cam Sunday 3rd block, Tom Tom fix.
As a Canadian we are constantly converting between Metric and imperial measurements. It is Much simpler to use for example you don't have to figure out that if 17/64 is to small then you need a 9/32.
Preach Brother! 😊
Dig Dug will soon need a new name, it is undergoing such a transformation it will soon be an all new creature!
Love your slow, methodical work Tom!
I lived in Europe for five years and really enjoyed the metric system for building things. Whole numbers baby! Get an all metric tape measure.
Sooo GOOD to see a Tom Tom video
I'm from the old country where we only used the inches and foots. The only way to go 😅 Thanks
Me to
Channel and vids are doing great! Thanks Tom! Keep up the good work 👍
Tom Tom rules 👍🏻 what a great man and great family. 👏🏼👍🏻🙏🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌲
We normally use mm instead of cm when dealing with metric system and steel works.
I agree with you, cm are for clothing and shit, this is engineering, use mm or meters.
Nice video Tom Tom. I always loved those older Jeep Wagoneers. Doctors wives drove them back in the days.
metric hugs from brazil! Cheers tom tom! keep up the nice work!
Lots of fun handing out with you Tom, Dig Dug is going to be a really tough durable rig. I look forward to watching it's progress and then you going for rides with all the Utah crews. The real test will be when you follow Rory, Sean and Mike in Moab, because where they take you will really push it. We know it's going to be good in sand, it already gets it done. Thanks for reminding me that I will never use the metric system for carpentry or Fabrication lol. 🚙
Thanks Tom for sharing.
Good job mate keep up the good work
Great content, as usual - Love your methodical approach - it all looks "SUPER"!!!!!
I worked for a GNC dealer in the 70's. We replaced tons of rear windows with sliders and never broke a one. Toughest windows ever we had a stack of them thrown in the corner
massive suspension travel on Sasquatch
Outstanding and awesome as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
"Let's go metric today" YEAH! oh... then you're taking us through your storage in foot-lengths #8 ) - love your work Tom. We use Metric down in the south pacific, it's so much easier for drill and tap sizes, lengths in mm.
Keep video coming.! Miss you on matts off road, let us know when you've reached 100000, subscribers 👍🇺🇸😇🙏
Tom Tom you said all metric but you're using imperial measure straight edges to mark lines and use as cutting guides. Ha, ha. Love your work.
For your couch - Flip the springs around. Build cross bars for coaster wheel so it can be easily moved but then locked down.
I just bought that exact PRP seat for my Cherokee XJ and installed it yesterday! Took my first drive in it today. 2 hours, super comfy.
Beautiful, precise and non fractional millimeters
Yup, an engineer experiencing what a mechanic faces everyday. Great Engineers Always ask the maintainers for their input, always good or bad. Regular engineers, here you go!
Great job. Thank you 😊
I love that catch phrase “11% better” 🤘😁🤘
Thanks Tom,
Your Video’s are Great!!!
Some fake NOS bottles by the fuel tank for rope holders would be so cool ❤
I used to work at a Bobcat plant. The tractors were shipped in from kioti on square tubing crates. I got a bunch for home use. I started to build a project, and it was metric sized tubing. Had to go buy inch sized tubing. I'll find a use for it one day.
THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
Thanks for the video Tom absolutely love dig dug she’s looking great
Lovin you using the metric system. It must be catchy because Gingium is using metric too !
Tom Tom, i need a cool dash like yours for my 77 gmc stepside. DIY4X is no longer, which is super sad for us sqaurebody people, so i can't get their dash set up. I can't wait to see how DigDug turns out. Keep up the great work!!
Good progress with some crawling !
you've earned my sub today for using metric
Great stuff, Tom. Thanks for sharing.
#ReadyForTheWJProjects
So Tom now that you’re going metric, you should also start using your Pickett Slide Rule for calculating your measurements 😅.
On a more serious suggestion. Have you considered centering the gas tank for a better side to side balance?
Love the channel and your style of show and tell, or is it " tell and show" ?
LOOKING GOOD TOM TOM AWESOME BUILD
Thanks for the video Tom
Fot the steering column weldments, those plates you said were 25mmx100mm looked a lot more like they were 25.4mm x 101.6mm.
That Wagoneer looked like it was ready to tip over the entire time. Very top heavy. Might just want to keep it as a mall crawler.
Tom Tom there's a plastic wall board made for kid's rooms that would work great to put up on the wall behind your steel storage rack. The drywall will get messed up pulling the long bars in and out .
Great job of course Tom Tom u r the man.
I've been touting the merits of the metric system for years. It's really embarrassing that we as a nation aren't. Going back and forth trying to use both just makes it worse. Use whatever system you want Tom. I can use both. Keep up the good work!
You could make a quick removal bracket for the bench seat and make it be able to mount in the bed of the truck. That way if you ever want to bring more people on trips you can quickly put it in the bed. Kind of like Paul at Fab Rat’s did with his FJ. 😎
Wagoneers are pretty rare when it comes to off roading, My dad built one when I was younger and it still needs a lot of work and now it needs to have the motor pulled because he went hot roding around the neighborhood and came back in the driveway and opened the hood. The problem is that this Jeep has the AMC 401 and parts are pretty hard to find especially the crank, basically if the crank is destroyed we're going with a new motor, but yeah Wagoneers are pretty durable off road and they get the job done.
I'm always blown away with all you do. Is there anything you don't know who to do??I wish I was mechanical.
Think I would have taken an angle grinder to the end of that panel given you are replacing it anyway! Always a pleasure to watch you
Tom you have great videos really enjoy watching and glade you take your time and do it right like some people we have seen on you tube that fly by the seat of their pants.
Tom Tom!! Keep the air conditioning in your truck! I understand trying to keep it simple but you live in the desert. I know, it’s not my truck. I’m just a whimp and can’t handle driving around with no A/C. Keep up the great content!! Dig Dug will be an awesome truck.
Hey Tom Tom can you put a to do list on a board and cross each item once you're done with it? I think it'd be fun to know how far or how close DigDug are from being done. 🙂 Always enjoy watching your video tomtom!
I saw TomTom under a vehicle without safety glasses and I was think, lord he is Matt junior then the next frame you had them on. I love that you always think about safety. Another great video. Thanks.
Nag, nag, nag; you're worse than a room full of old women.
Great episode Tom.
Great job!!!!
Good job Tom Tom
Good job Tom!!
Do you have a video with your standard welding settings? Always impressive watching your work on a vehicle. Better than my bench work haha
Looking great Tom gonna be one tough truck
