I cried at the end of "Talk"
This song is an emotional Rollercoaster... l weep every time l listen to it.. l now consider it my favorite. The build up, the complete circle and feelings that are being poured out, grabs my heart..
I agree Jim, that Endless Dream isn't as good as Awaken, or Close to the Edge, or The Gates of Delirium, or even Tales from Topographic Oceans, but it's still a really great EPIC piece of music, and I'm glad that Trevor showed that he can both write and play Prog, in his own style. Hope you watch him play Awaken with ARW. I think you'll be quite impressed.
Endless Dream, Shoot High Aim Low, Hearts would make up a more enjoyable listening experience than Tales- sorry not sorry lol

Absolutely agree. Thanks to all who commented about it. I have been struggling lately with listening to old Yes tunes, especially Awaken and You and I. It brings such strong emotions, both joy and sorrow. Joy for the awesomeness of the music, and sorrow for the fact that we will never see or hear this version of the band again. I want to mention specifically the keyboards from Tony Kaye on Endless Dream. It reminds me of Rick Wakeman and Awaken.
Great album, woefully overlooked in the Yes catalog.

Just an observation Jim. You got a little emotional during Endless Dream. I saw it in your face and in your eyes. Had you talked about it right after it finished we would of felt that emotion. By playing the bonus track I feel that gave you time to gather yourself before you had to react. ED is a great song that was very well done. It was the last song played on the tour before Roundabout and the other encores. Thanks again Jim for continuing the YES journey❗⭐😎

“Endless Dream” is easily my favorite off of Talk. Trevor made his epic. The strong vocal arrangements of Jon, Chris, and Trevor were the strength of this lineup. Symphonically this lineup can’t compare to the classic 70’s versions; however, I feel the classic 70’s versions can’t compete with this line-up vocally. “Endless Dream” has that epic payoff of the vocals at the end that I absolutely love. I love both styles for different reasons which is great for myself as it means there is more Yes that I love. Keeps me from getting bored with them if that is possible. I like AC/DC, but I would get bored doing a marathon of their albums despite how rockin’ cool they are. This lineup of Yes all ended up living in the US full time. Not sure on the timeline of their move if they were all there at the time.
We are all judging the Band on the 70's Heyday (Symphonic Era) this album is 25 years after the first Yes album the musical Landscape was so different in 1994.
The live Tour was absolutely incredible.

I think the fact that the digital piano is sequenced rather than played makes it less "virtuosic" than had it been recorded decades before. Nice to have them play in 5 for a change.

The thing I really appreciate about the 3 Rabin era albums is that the band never stopped experimenting. They sounded fresh from album to album. "Endless Dream" what an appropriate song to end that lineup on.

Hey Jim, glad you appreciate this album. Don't know why you feel you need to apologize for liking it. It's a great album regardless of when it was recorded. Agree that Squire is too low in the mix. Otherwise, it stands up wit CTTE and Fragile and Going For the One. Obviously, that's just my opinion.
The owner of the record label specifically wanted an album by the 90125 band after Union. There were talks to have Rick Wakeman in the band, as he and Trevor really hit it off on the Union tour and wanted to make a Yes album together, but that fell through. They finally toured as Anderson-Rabin-Wakeman (then as Yes featuring…) and wrote some material, but that album hasn’t materialized.
Once the Talk album was released, the label collapsed and there was virtually no promotion for it. They did release a computer DVD-ROM with videos and outtakes.
The tour (which added Billy Sherwood on additional guitars, bass keyboards, and vocals) has basically every show bootlegged because they used a new technology to broadcast the sound via short-range radio. So you could bring a radio and headphones to listen there at the show. Of course, you could also bring a recorder to get the mixed feed directly.
Tony Kaye only plays Hammond organ on this album. All the other keyboards are Trevor Rabin.
This is last Yes album that really moved me.

This fits right into the idiom of what 90's prog was sounding like. Play this next to Spock's Beard's _The Light_ (which would come out just a year later) and you get an idea that this was sort of the zeitgeist of prog's wilderness years in the 90's.
I am a mess!!!! I think Jim. You got a little emotional on "Endless Dream" too. This song always get to me every time I hear this song!!!! Just tears all over my face!!!! Another Epic Song!!! Another Masterpiece!!!!!! A classic of the 90's!!! Jon Anderson voice is AMAZING!!!! I have heard a lot of Yes and seen them in concert 5 times....he has NEVER hit that high note on any of his songs as he did in this song and the message if the song just leaves me in tears!!!! Love this song!!!! Love this song!!!! Love Love this album which is a hidden gem that some music companies and industry did not want us to know about that is why it is soooooo expensive to get!!! I got it and play constantly. Another Epic album you need to react to Jim is "Keys To Ascension." and the song That, That is is a masterpiece!!!!! Very Very hard hitting Heavy Metal and Funky music in this album. I disagree with the American music influence bit......Folk.....Rap......Rock n' Roll ....R & B....Blues.....Funk.....and Iazz......and Gospel music are American music and literally "African American Music" that has influenced music since the 1940's so Yes has always included and experimented with these genres...and I feel along with millions of Yes fans that YES did a fantastic job integrating these genres in "Endless Dream" and other songs on this album. Beautiful!!!! And "The Calling" is just updated Crosby Stills Nash & Young style Folk music. A Great Band Greatness is learning other avenues to add to their creativity is creating. And Yes is doing just that!!!! Your reaction was okay....a little Bias and stuck in the past!!! Time to expand & Grow this 2023!!!
I like endless dream very much, mainly for building up tension through changing keys, getting higher and higher, up to the final hymn-like ending. This is Jon at his best IMO.
The composition before that ending is a mixed bag, though. It's clearly Trevor trying to construct a "classic" Yes epic. In the beginning he's churning out as much "instrumental progressiveness" as possible, just to continue in a much slower style, constantly stopping only to start again with some new experimental section (I fell into the same trap when trying to construct a "mock Yes epic" myself).
I can also understand why some people find it rather boring and uninspired harmonically. It has a very uplifting and positive vibe, which I appreciate, but at the same time it's not as special and interesting as many other Yes tunes when it comes to harmonies.
Also when hearing the piano section with Trevors distorted voice, which works quite well overall, I can't help to wonder what Rick Wakeman would have done on the piano. A real, acoustic piano, that is.

That's very sweet, Jeff. At my funeral, I asked my brother to play Requiem by King Crimson... cause I'm a little nuts, lol... but I think you win on the funeral songs. Those are 3 beautiful and stunning choices. Sorry we got into it with each other. I prefer when we enjoy messing with each other, all in good fun. Inspirational, I don’t think you should over think this album Jim, you seemed to be struggling a bit there.
Just take it at face value, it’s a good album and I never get tired of listening to it.

To me, Endless Dream has always been the last big YES song. The conclussion of their career. A sweet and peaceful conclussion.
There are many songs after that one that I love: New state of mind (from Open your eyes), Homeworld (from The Ladder), Give love each day, We agree (from Magnification), and Fly from here (from the homonimous album), but they're not as good as this one.
Endless dream is a mix of power, electronic (sometimes it remids to Vangelis or Jean Michelle Jarre), power american rock, piano ballad, and most of all: beauty. It's a love song for the YES fans.
I only can say these final words.

To this day , the first song just kills em all , Wonderfull , still today 2024 very fresh and total talent guys
What gets me every time in Endless Dream is Jon Anderson shouting out in the background during Rabin's final guitar solo, one assumes with his customary enthusiasm. 14:27 and 14:35 on this video. So glad they kept this in the mix. A human moment in the midst of pretty soulless production, which brings a tear to my eye every time. Imagine if Endless Dream had been recorded in analogue. We'd all be in pieces!
You know, listing to this, and I have not for some time, its so fresh and dynamic. Trevor brought such an ethereal sound which put them, as always, a cut above what everyone esle was doing. Alan's drumming is just shear power. Yes was his breakout for what he could and would do with percussives. I'm sorry, but no one touches Yes, during Andersons tenure.

Endless Dream doesn't have all the finesse and grandeur of Awaken, but the progression of that music and lyrics to that majestic ending gives me the same satisfaction. Maybe in my list of your 2023 favourite reactions. 🤩

For some reason, when albums are released in Japan, they like to have an extra track not on the regular release. In many cases this is an extra song, but from what I understand they didn’t have an extra song, so they saved the longer version of “The Calling” for the Japanese release.

With hindsight, perhaps the bonus 'Calling' could have been skipped. Then the real album ending might have registered a little differently with you Jim. Nevertheless I'm glad you enjoyed reacting to Talk. Plenty to discuss and good music always provides discussion.
Anyway, Jim I want to say that Endless Dream and the whole album really is geared to the young adults of the 90's and 21st century younger audiences.....where the attention span is quite limited. So, they took out many transitions which made YES legendary and made it easy to follow.......now this was back in the 90's right?....the bands has learned much beause now they have a faithful new younger audience that has listened and bought their music from the 60's 70's and 80's.....and are quite emphatic about YES being the Best group they EVER heard....and these young folks LOVE and UNDERSTAND their Spiritual message....they think Jon Anderson....Chris Squire.....and Steve Howe are "Angelic gods!" So, with Jon ill and not with the band anymore and Chris and Alan and Bulford passed away....We have new members and new music of the band.....and it will be quite interesting how their sound will change and be updated but retain the traditional themes of the YES band of the 70's or 80's.....The album, "Mirror of The Sky," is released on May 19th this year.....and the second song has been released two weeks ago. Check it out!!! Great Reactions!!!

I love music that surprises me. Endless Dream does that. While it's no Close to the Edge or Heart of the Sunrise, it is in my mind an epic Yes song.
We were halfway through The Calling before I noticed anything different from the original. Perhaps with the length of the other songs and the Yessistic tempo/key changes some of the others included, they needed to slice one down a bit. Other than that dreamy break, it's the same song. I do like it, though.
This is the best Yes I would hear for 5 more years. Then, the final Yes album I would purchase in physical form came out in 1999; The Ladder. They finally hired a good producer, they finally opened the door to some younger, fresh ears and talent on a studio recording, and they put out a sometimes "safe" sometimes exciting, but completely wonderful record (with some minor criticisms in my opinion). I don't recall if you reviewed The Ladder, will look it up.

No one band can maintain steady masterpieces but can only have a few best albums. It's not fair to say that another album is a disappointment because it's not like their absolute masterpiece. If it were the first Yes album you had ever heard, most likely you would be blown away.
I am not a native speaker of English but I checked it, and although the word "turnpike" has a slightly different meaning in both versions of English, it has been in use both in the UK and in the US. :-) In the UK, it seems, at least since 17th century. 🙂
Jim, gotta call you out in this: my great-grandparents lived on “Old Turnpike Road.” In Fareham and 70 years ago 😂
Yeah, I know (well, not your grandparents!) and of course Turnpike Lane is a tube station on the Piccadilly Line. I had a bit of a brain fart there!
If you are going further with Yes, chronologically, I'd say the studio tracks on the two Keys To Ascension double albums are worth a listen and bits of The Ladder, but I'd avoid Open Your Eyes as it's a bit of a dog (and I don't mean the D's Bs)!
@28:00 you nailed exactly what bothered me with this albul I have this record that I bought when it came out. I quite like it but I never felt it reached the level of older albums (or even the level of Magnification) and I never got why I felt that way and I think you are right. It is too much Howe and too light on Squire.
Oh and you’ll get to hear probably the first studio recording of Chris Squire play harmonica in the next album! Keystudio rocks

In all the years I’ve listened to Endless Dream, I never noticed the very slight tribute to Astral Traveler’s riff.
Something that occurred to me, are you going to listen to ALL of Keys to Ascension 1 and 2 or just the studio tracks? Because there are some really worthwhile versions of songs on those albums. Especially the version of Onward on Keys 1. I think it would be fun to watch you re-react to those song but also give a nice refresher of all the great Yes Music you've heard up to this point.

6:45 This is the part that I didn't like the first time I listened to it... but now I kinda like it, but I really like the part at 7:48 : )
My gripe with "Endless Dream" isn't because it's not "Close to the Edge", it's because IMO it's a flawed epic period. Here's why...
It actually starts fine from the opening instrumental through the opening laid back verses (although is it just me who thinks Jon is oddly straining at 6:12?). The transition to the rock theme at 6:25 works well, but then this theme is just weirdly dropped after two passes and we transition (Ambient Padding Bridge No. 1) to what's essentially a totally different song at 6:45. This tells me Trevor was in charge of the arrangement because I don't think Jon would have allowed the development of a theme be aborted so abruptly, and Trevor has had a long habit of inserting musical non-sequiturs into his songs. The whole "song" from 7:15 to 7:48 just seems cut and pasted in (which I'm guessing it literally was) because it just ends without any real development and we're thrown back into the 6:25 theme again.
I like the key change at 8:05 (and hey, we can hear some Squire backing vocals -- he IS on this album). But then again at 8:49 this section is cut short, followed by Ambient Padding Bridge No. 2 which goes on for about a minute.
At 9:55 we return to the opening keyboard sequence and dramatic chords, but with a darker tinge. Fair enough, except after what's been a relatively sedate and leisurely song up til this point we finally get a tease of some real Squire-White instrumental fireworks. But of course that also gets quickly shut down, and we return to Jon's opening vocal theme.
That then transitions to the final (almost gospel-ish) vocal section at 12:20. I personally don't find it that interesting compositionally, but THIS section is what they allow to go on for a relative eternity, all the way to 15:15. Ambient Padding Bridge No. 3 is used to transition to the denouement at 15:32, which is actually very nice (I especially like the modulation at 16:23). But then it all just sort of drifts off, oddly unresolved.
I'm glad the song (and album) has so many supporters. Yes certainly needed all the support they could get in the mid-90's, with band members lost in the wilderness, their label going belly up, and a rotating door of management outfits. But to put "Endless Dream" anywhere even close to past Yes epics is a head scratcher. I haven't even mentioned the lyrics. I get some sort of spiritual journey out of what I can hear, although Trevor's and Jon's lyrical styles have never meshed that well, and nothing here changes that.
Oh well, since my early comment regarding seeing this album in a charity shop, I finally went back to see if it was still there. I was very much mistaken! It wasn’t this album, but Yes’s very FIRST album! Haha anyway I picked that one up instead. Never owned it before, so I’m happy to add this to my collection.
Ps…it was the cover, that fooled me. Both have ‘yes’ in large font on the cover. That’s my excuse, anyway.

Hello Jim, thank you for the good work you did with this album! it's nice to hear other's opinion on the matter. I wish that I could be a Yes "virgin" like you are, I mean you haven't listened to all their albums yet, unlike everybody here, who listened to them tons of time and watch their live show. Even if I like Yes, I don't love every song.

Actually, starting with this album, I don't know any of the Yes studio albums going forward. I did attend several shows after this point, so I may have heard an occasional track in concert, but I don't think there are any tracks I know by title if I heard them. So my ears at this point are almost as virginal as Jim's. 😉
I enjoyed Endless Dream. I think I commented in the last video I agreed with Jim and have to again. Kaye is kind of invisible in Endless Dream once again, the credits say specify that Kaye was on hammond organ so all the piano parts and other weird keyboardy bits I think are on Rabin. This album has more harmonies than Big Generator which is one of the stronger aspects of of 90125.

Odd sounds all over the place! Rhubarb and custard almost😂. This is the greater side of cheese🧀....excuse the pun there lol. Epic indeed...like an 80s rock opera.....without the opera....like what they did there with talk....nice 4/7 tracks enjoyed then.
I'm gonna mark it as a worthy listen 6/10 as far as original album tracks go. Not sure I'd go back but glad I heard it.

Jim, I think you were a bit tough on Endless Dreams. This is no longer the 70's and Yes had morphed into a totally different sound. Jon Anderson wanted to create one final epic song. No Howe, no Wakeman and I believe this song never got it's credit. Different time, different sound but still excellent.
From what I've seen in the intro, you have Keystudio, so I guess that's the next one. That's the first time in 20 years that the classic lineup of Anderson-Squire-Howe-Wakeman-White recorded in the studio, and the last. Some interesting tracks on there, but especially "Mind Drive", which I'm guessing that you'll really like
And "That, That Is" is another incredible track.
That is a great tune. Cooler because Page wrote the central riff. Howe made it his own. Love the Keys albums.

Can we mention one central element that 70's prog had that was sort of lost over time to more technical elements? Catering to the psychedelic experience was a big part of what Yes was trying to achieve (and succeeded, it's largely why the band keeps finding a new fans). By the time Trevor was there, it was something different from an artistic mission statement perspective. I kind of think they sort of telegraphed some of that by commissioning Peter Max and his "pop art" style (that's it's own wormhole) instead of Roger Dean to do the logo design. Trevor is more pop art than into the cosmic, trippy stuff Anderson was into (which became it's own cliche over time).

Yes on steroids. It sound good though (although I still think the drums and guitar sound too heavy in comparison with the other instruments)
The quiet part behind the heavy start is a bit dull. Jon sounds good though.
Then things become more interesting.
I like the ‘Talk’ part of this song although I think that more could have been achieved.
It’s a good song but it can’t reach the level of the songs from the early seventies. Listen to Yessongs and you’ll know what I mean.

As I mentioned in the first video, Rabin’s writing in Yes tends to come across rather ‘schizophrenic’, sometimes even within the scope of a single tune - examples like Changes, The Miracle of Life, and even Endless Dream point clearly to this. Unlike the Howe material where motifs and passages subtly flow and spill into one another, Rabin’s stuff often comes across as forced, abrupt, almost stitched-together from disparate elements…I can imagine him writing a catchy pop tune, and then Jon Anderson, or their producer coming in and saying, “Hey Trev, we really need a fiddly, muso bit for the prog heads!”
I suspect Rabin found himself caught in this limbo of earworms (which he excels at!) and then shoehorning in these overly elaborate ‘proggy’ passages/nods to make it feel “Yessier”.
Hi Jim. I think Talk is a decent album. Highlight for me Real Love and Endless Dream. Next up would be Keystudio. Although released in 2001, this contains the studio tracks from their 1996 Keys To Acension albums. This will be interesting. I'm curious what you will think about this album. To me their best output since Drama. And Chris Squires bass is back🙂👍
You mentioned looking out for the vinyl in Part 1 ... from a sound point of view there is not much sense in getting it on vinyl as it this is an all-digital (in fact all recorded on hard-disk) album.
Jim, I wonder how you will react to the music they made after dumping Jon. It will be interesting to see.
This is a difficult album to assess.
There are parts I think are fantastic classic Yes, and there are parts I don't necessarily care for.
It's like the 90210 band tried to recreate the early sound of 70's Yes in a way, but is unmistakably 90's in it's production.
Still a decent album and better than Union.
It is still missing something organic about it.
More Chris Squire please.

Next is Keys To Ascension. Which again is very different and back with the "Classic Yes" Line up. Would you be doing the full version with all the live tracks or just the Studio version which has just the new recorded tracks?
I really really like the studio version, but I completely love this live version with Trevor's solo and Squire's voice and bass being more prominent. Plus, a rare moment in Yes having 2 basses with a young Billy Sherwood

Overall, after watching all these, for me Big Generator and 90125 are better. This one tries too hard. And I can barely listen to Union. Same as Rick Wakeman! 😂
The worst Yes album imo is "Close your eyes". I'm curious if you will try it sometime.
I've always struggled with Talk. For me it's mixed too loud and has a harsh, shrill sound to it throughout. There some flashes of brilliance, but it's always come across as a Trevor Rabin album more than a Yes album to me. It also has a dreadful cover and it's almost like Yes were saying they no longer wanted to be Yes, if that makes sense. Chris Squire is almost nowhere to be heard and the drums are a bit too far forward in the mix. They made a big thing at the time of how many computers they had to link together to record it and the whole package feels like an exercise in technology rather than an emotional album. I barely listen to it and when I do, can't do it all in one go.
Recording brightness is often proportional to the amount of cocaine used.
lol- that subplot doesn't get explored by the fans much, but it's an issue (it's also why Chris is buried here- he was zonked, not overly involved and didn't really fight any of Trevor's direction and didn't want to anyway, probably wisely).

This is a great album for outing the curmudgeons. Those saying it is not Yes .... Wtf.... Those saying it is so-so or average rock album from its era, please highlight anything better... I am yet to hear it.

Im a huge yes fan and this is not thr best yes..
Yes just went downhill after this fantastic album, this was the end of yes for me, the songwriting after this album all went downhill in a really bad way and I think a lot of it is down to Billy Sherwood who is a shocking singer and just as terrible at writing songs as you will find out later.
Yes, no following Yes album did reach the songwriting, rocking & production level of Talk, but I think Fly From Here was the best album the band made after Talk. Mostly because of Trevor Horn producing it.
Liking it, just not loving it.
