Propspeed & Coppercoat FAILURE? SUCCESS? Does Antifouling Paint EVER WORK?? (P Childress Sailing 63)

- Patrick Childress gives an update and review on our Coppercoat antifouling , as well as the Propspeed on our prop and shaft. Patrick shows how we applied Propspeed and some tips and tricks for applying Propspeed to the KiwiProp. But, be sure to watch the official how to apply Propspeed application video as noted below.
There is another world cruising sailboat that launched at the same boatyard, two weeks after ours, who traveled the same route, and is sitting in the same water near to us. Patrick uses his Seabreathe hookah to examine the two boat bottoms and see how they compare in antifouling results. Which one has prevented the marine growth better?
You won’t believe the difference between the two boat bottoms. Our boat, with the Coppercoat antifouling cleaned as easily as wiping dust It is great to now have a sailboat where cleaning the bottom of marine growth is quick and easy!

How often should we do these updates of Coppercoat and Propspeed? And do you want more How to videos, or would you rather some sailing tips? And please...any ideas for lightly cleaning the bottom without having to go in the water...we are ALL ears!
Patrick Childress Sailing will Coppercoat work in warm tropical waters? That could be a good test to try one day!
I think 4 months like bl a few quick clips for the updates when you do the cleaning in the future. Cleaning might not warrant a video, but I think we'd like to see progress reports if and when you do a video........ Either way it's looking great.
"How to" videos are what brought me here. Thanks for sharing them.
Thanks, TV. The next 2 videos will be sailing the African coast but will have some how toos in there. We don't do entertainment. We thought it best to get caught up in location then get back to the "how to fix" things. Maybe it would be good to show this boat can sail.
I like both the sailing and the how to videos. Very interested in updates on Coppercoat.
So sorry for your loss Rebecca! I do believe Patrick lived more life in the past 15 years than most could pack in in a life time thanks to you..
Yes,,.that’s for sure..he really knew how to live life to the fullest!
Rebecca I am so very sorry. I know these videos will be watched for many years. Patrick was so full of great knowledge. I hope you continue this channel.
Thanks..I am…
Our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences for the loss of your husband Patrick.
Thank you
My condolences Rebecca, I haven't seen your channel before but I have seen the grief in the sailing community for Patrick so you have been added to my playlist.
Oh thanks so much
Our sincerest condolences. Hard to believe he is gone. My spouse and I are looking forward to getting our first sailboat and I'm the kind of guy who wants to know a lot more about things before venturing into them. I have learned a lot from you and Patrick. I was and am Sad he has passed on. I will continue on our journey to sailing and watch his videos for guidance for as long as they are available. Patrick you are missed. Rest in peace.
Thanks so much Anthony...a huge compliment to us both...Patrick will be forever missed. I’m glad I don’t have to do that missing alone. Thank you
So so sorry for your loss!! I'm just a couch and lake sailor, really enjoyed Patricks videos, Hope you find a way to keep up one of your channels! All the best going forward!
Thanks. Struggling to keep all of it going, but somehow I’m still sailing, and still YouTubing…
wow. Rebecca, Patrick will be sorely missed. He was a very knowledgeable man and I enjoyed watching his videos. I still get a little misty eyed thinking about your latest video. I hope you are ok and continue with his legacy, and your journey. he was a special man and you are a special woman to continue educating fellow sailors and others. Good luck, fair winds and following seas.
Thank you so much for your compliment of us both ;)
Sorry, to hear Patrick fell to COVID!
God bless
Ah thanks for watching so many and commenting…hope you still watching.
.
This must be the best sailing channel on UA-cam. I recently bought my first boat as a 25 y/o and i feel like you're the sailing grandparents i never got! So much warmth in your videos. Big greetings from Sweden!
MrFreddfull, welcome aboard! And thanks for your nice words.
Very sorry to hear about Patrick, really enjoyed his easy going style of videos, RIP Patrick.
Yes...thanks so much
Watching this after I somehow happened upon Rebecca's heart wrenching video about Patrick. What a great guy. So many boat related channels, but this is a good one. Blessings.
Thanks...hope I can keep it that way.
So great to see you getting some reward for all that hull work, congratulations and long may it continue.
Thanks Samantha. We hope the Propspeed will only need to be done in 2 or 3 years...hoping the Coppercoat to last 10! -Rebecca
Just watched this in response to your latest video in tribute to Patrick- unfortunately not subscribed till now but that man was a genuine great guy hope you get through this tough time and sail on to keep YOUR dream alive of seeing the world from brick house... much love...
Thanks for getting me!
I enjoy all your "how to" episodes. You're a wealth of knowledge 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Keep safe. Your friend in snowy Syracuse New York.
Is it STILL snowy there! Gawd! Thanks for watching! I wish the how to videos were done, but I’m afraid you are in for a lot more torture. If nothing else, those that watch Patrick’s videos will NEVER be under the false impression that sailing around the world is about cocktail parties and sunsets ;) -Rebecca on SV Brick House
@@RVLifeNOW We had hoped it was over too 🤮🤯🤪😂😁
But we're use to it. Not much else we can do, everything is in semi lockdown here. Thanks for writing back 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Another excellent vid .....i always learn something from each one.
Thank you.
Thanks for watching our Coppercoat and Propspeed review! -Rebecca
Keep well & be safe, Luv&Peace Sean&family! We are thinking of you and your in our prayers & hearts Rebecca. 💜🙏✌⚘

@@RVLifeNOW 🙂⚘
learnt so much from you guys and Patrick - he's alive still in my heart and a lot of changes on my boat is after listening to what he taught me. Rest in peace Patrick and I hope you are Ok Rebekkah?
Yes, I feel the same. Everything I do now, is to keep this boat perfect like he did.
Just when I started to wonder (worry) how you three were doing you post this video. Now I can worry less. Stay healthy.
Thanks for worrying! Were you worried about our Coppercoat and Propspeed working, or how our lockdown in South Africa was going? We are fine...hunkered down, trying to get ahead on the how to videos. Always good to hear from you Eric. -Rebecca
Patrick Childress Sailing Wasn’t worried about coppercoat or propspeed, you two know what you’re doing. I was concerned about the virus and both your healths. The word on the street ranges from it will kill you to you won’t even know you have it. Imagine the truth lies somewhere in the middle. After 9/11 we altered our life style so we were and are well prepared. Not nutty wild eyed ready but a more conservative branch off that same tree.
Eric haskell Yes...it’s hard to know what to believe about the coronavirus! It does seem to mostly be taking out those with complications. My 44 year old brother tested positive for it, and while he knew he had something at least similar, he never skipped a beat or a day of work with it ( already was working at home) . All he had was a cough that would come and go, a tickly throat, and a couple of days of a congested chest and more migraines than he typically gets. He goes today for his day 28 testing. He’s not so sure he is completely over it since he is still coughing every other day or so. Thanks for your concern...we are ok so far...and like passages...boring is good. Hope you and your family are all well, and of the percentage that doesn’t even know they have it! -Rebecca
Patrick Childress Sailing I have been meaning to ask is have you made a video(s) on what paths you each have taken that got you to where you are now? Every time I watch your videos I can’t help but think how I could have ended up the same as you had I only made different choices early on. Stay healthy.
I’m impressed Patrick , I last dived in the Atlantic side of Cape Town many years ago. It’s just sooo cold. Nowadays I would never get in the water down there.
I am impressed with that copper coat of yours. Really seems to working well.
I could not get propspeed shipped here to RSA with Amazon but managed to get a new comparable Israeli product called prop guard ESP-600 which is nano technology. Same price 😩 but I got some and will be trying it on my new Kiwi props when I launch next month( hopefully all going well and no more lockdowns)
It’s still so hot up this end I believe Cape Town is chilly already. Rgards
Maybe it is too late for you, but it might help someone else; I just got this from Propspeed, as there is a new distributor in S.A.:
Signature Power Systems
Email: info@signaturepower.co.za
Ph: +27 82 691 1664
They did not say what city they are in. The last time I put Propspeed on my Kiwiprop, I put 3 coats of primer on the blades which gave it a more uniform gold color. We will see how two coats works out this time.
Hot where you are in the tropics, but much like air conditioning where we are in Hout Bay. We have the little plug in heater going all night and most of the day. Before the lock down, we would see the children jumping off the pier into this cold water. People from the yacht club sail in little boats, full sail, in 20 knots of wind, kicking up all kinds of spray and then there are those who paddle around in kayaks and paddle boards. After watching a lady clean boat bottoms here, I couldn't wimp out, and the video had to be made. I am not looking forward to wiping the hull before we leave but next time I will wear my thin shorty with the long sleeves then put on the thicker Farmer John along with pouring warm water inside! Of course that water in Richards Bay is body temperature. Good to hear you are making progress.
Great vid guys, Brickhouse looks fantastic.
Thanks so much!
Another great vid from Brickhouse... now i realize there's a lot more to know about Propspeed Prop paint than just paint it on! And it looks like your copper coat antifouling paint is working too!
Thanks for the comment and compliment Life on Jupiter! Thanks for watching our Coppercoat and Propspeed video! I see you have another awesome video out about West Sumatra! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
You are a very lovely couple and I continue to be taken by the very modest way you present that wealth of experience. On the strength of the report of your diy application of copper coat I have splashed out on this material waiting for a weather opportunity and some help to do the work. Bit concerned about the dropping temperatures as we approach ‘winter’ (Sydney) with its overnight dew.
Yes..the copper coat is definitely sensitive to humidity and wetness! You don’t want a pile of copper paint n a puddle under the boat! But if you can get a nice dry week...you should be OK for the Coppercoat application. You won’t regret it...we are so pleased so far. But remember, better to spend 5 days sanding with 320 than 1 day with 80. Patrick’s middle name is “Why Wait” and sanding after the Coppercoat application was no exception! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
Hurray the copper coat is a success as well as the prop speed! Well Done! A nice towel type fabric mitt looks like it would be really nice to clean off the hull with that copper coat. Great to see the update Patrick and Rebecca. Hope you both are safe and healthy in these crazy times. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to Patrick's next video!
Thanks, David, always good to hear from you!
Another very informative video.
Thanks! How often do you think we should do these updates? Would you rather see more how to videos, or a few sailing videos for a change?
@@RVLifeNOW I would like to see updates every couple of months. Both sailing and how to videos are great. In Britain we have enough tidal range to scrub the bottom between tides using legs, a quayside or a careening grid. Is this possible in SA.
@@oldsailor9022 No, there is not enough tide range here, as in most other places we have been.
Hi Patrick and Rebecca, once again thank you so much for a fabulous video and for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience. I just finished reading “our island in the sun“ and found it fascinating to hear about the Brickhouse history.I hope you guys are staying safe and sane during these crazy times and as always I’m looking forward to your next video. Cheers
Thank you glassman, it is always great to read your comments. I am in the middle of the next video but it will have to be a 2 part vid. The first part is sailing from Richards Bay to East London. I have a fun seasick sequence and our little 6 moth old Coati is the most miserable looking cat you can imagine and Rebecca is about the same....I was able to work my favorite Charlie Chaplain seasick clip into it. That will be ready to post in 2 weeks.
All your videos are gems!!
I love the way you explain and especially not afraid to say where it went wrong.
I am learning a LOT from you and appreciate your hard work into making those videos.
Thank you very much!!!!!!!
Eric, thanks much for your positive comment. It is days and days and days of work to make one video but it is fun work.
Great info! Was just watching Tom Cunliff and he showed a picture of him and his wife from the 70s. They looked like rock stars. Would love to see some old photos of your early days...
These ARE are younger days! Haha! Good idea...will see what we can dig up for some future videos... could break up the boredom of the how to and sailing videos :) haha -Rebecca
Hi Patrick and Rebecca thanks for the follow up on coppercoat and glad to see all is well!
Thanks for watching Chris... glad it was helpful. 4 months is really nothing...but we are glad to see it’s not a failed a Coppercoat application. We are delighted with how easily it just wipes off. I was nervous because of some of the application deviations...but I am just so tickled that it’s working so well and of course we already knew that the Propspeed works well...we once asked that company if they made Propspeed for the whole boat. Alas, we found Coppercoat!! -Rebecca
She looks so much happier sat in the water. The coppercoat looks like you got the application pretty good. Let’s hope it holds up! How-to or sailing videos? Either would make great viewing. Stay safe.
Yes, so far so good on the Coppercoat. The next two videos will cover sailing from Richards Bay to Hout Bay, near Cape Town. They will be sailing but with some "how to" things they don't teach at the sailing schools. Thanks, atschris, for your comment.
Thanks so much. Ok...more sailing videos...more how to videos, coming up :) I wasn’t so sure of the success of the Coppercoat application...because it’s our first time, and we weren’t sure how picky it would be. The Propspeed we have used for years, so we knew Propspeed would do what it’s suppose to do. We are pretty sure we have a winning combination now! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
Thanks for the video Patrick the bottom and prop may stay cleaner as you sail more it relies on the water moving past the hull to wash the growth off
I agree..that’s good advice! Let’s go sailing and keep the prop clean! And the Coppercoat too!
I have a 1979 Iroquios Cat that the previous owner with members of his yacht club coppercoated 9 years prior to my purchase. The situation now is that it is defunct and needs renewal (mussels around 3 inches thick deep, ) so its a beach it and redo. My brother lived in Noordhoek for many years before returning to the UK and I have had several beers in the "Red Herring" in 1997 (ish) A fantastic area to live. Thanks for the response on your latest very sad vid.
Thank you
Excellent comparative video...well done....you folks are likely Patagonia bound by now, videos being +4 months behind...hope all is well, hope you are isolated and safe regardless! Thanks, Andrew
Hi Andrew. We are locked down in Hout Bay, still. No problem really, we have destinations, not ETAs. There are plenty of little boat jobs to do and these videos take a tremendous amount of time, so we stay busy. We would like though, to travel this area by car some day and not be forced away because of some visa time limit. We will see. Thanks for the positive comment on the Propspeed video. We got lucky to have the other boat to compare things to.
Patrick
Thanks for the follow up on the prop-speed and the copper anti-faul paint... I was always curious about that... but we can't use the copper in the use... but I do have the propspeed on the prop I did a year ago ... I really like that stuff

Twisted, good to hear the Propspeed is working out for you. I do wonder what some of the people who have had failed Propspeed, just where they went wrong in the application. Thanks for watching and your comment.

Great, great video. Very helpful. I've been watching your videos since early 2019 because I intend to retire sailing.
Right now I'm going through a very painful marriage breakup from my beautiful wife. It's your videos that give me hope for the future. Thanks so much.
David P, so sorry to hear of the breakup. That is a very difficult thing to have to go through. But sailing does open a whole world of new adventures and the ability to meet very special people who start out as acquaintances and become very good friends. Thanks for joining with us in these videos.

Thanks Edan! We appreciate your comment on our Propspeed and Coppercoat video! Glad you find them helpful! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
The best and cheapest anti fouling I found is fresh and salt water.
I kept my 1930 wooden 10m motor yacht on the upper River Thames which was fresh water, at trip down to the coast into salt water would burn off the fouling. This was replaced by sea water creatures, then in turn they would be burnt off on our return up river.
Yes of course I did have to apply anti foul but the fresh/salt water treatment did mean the stuff lasted longer.
Dear Rebecca please accept my deepest condolences on the sad loss of your dear husband Patrick.
Fresh and salt water for Antifouling mars a lot of sense. And Thank you.
Great update! Loved all these how tos but in the lockdown times, some sailing videos would be a great escape! Thanks for sharing.
That’s exactly what I’m thinking...Sailing videos more entertaining when we are all stuck aboard or at home! Out with the Coppercoat and Propspeed, in with sailing!!!-Rebecca
I use coppercoat on my 12 meters motorboat since y2002 and it is still perfect. Once a year I just cleen up with high pressure water and that is it. Ready for another season. If the sea water is warm occasially I scuba and clean the hull with scotch brite. I saved a lot of money along 17 years.
Thanks for the report, Roberto. I hope we have the same success.
Roberto Mauro Wow...17 years with with one Coppercoat application! Wow...you got your money’s worth! If we get half of that we will be thrilled...but REALLY thrilled if we get what you and many people get out of Coppercoat! I would think for seasonal sailings it would be an absolute nobrainer as you haul the boat each year and can do a nice pressure wash! But for us sailing around the world, where haulouts aren’t readily available in many areas...it’s a must have as far as I can see...assuming it continues to be easy to wipe off!! Rebecca on SV Brick House
Even though I am a dinghy sailor and haul out of fresh water, Iam finding these vids very helpful since I am about to "restore" a dinghy. Sage travels! Safe too!
Thank you, for your nice feedback which is very helpful to us.
Really great product reviews and the side by side comparison really tells the tale.
Thanks for your comment, Dmac K
I've always been interested in copper coat, but I've heard so many horror stories I've always avoided it. It's good to see someone actually have a good experience with using it. In theory copper coat should be the best antifouling product, although in practice it rarely works as expected. The best antifouling I've ever used contained loads of Tributyltin biocide, but for very good reasons the product is no longer available. Thanks for the copper coat update, I am looking forward to see how it holds over time.
TBT was effective. From what we have experienced with applying the Coppercoat and from communicating with others about their Coppercoat, it really does appear people go very wrong with the application, the same with Propspeed and then complain about a failed product. Always good to hear from you Tattoo.
Glad to hear that there was some nice sailing too!
It was blowing a stink or flat calm and motoring, with a little pleasant sailing in between. Such is S. Africa yachting! Thanks for watching.
You went 4 months before clean the bottom.? I’ve been in the marine industry for 23 years and most of my clients scrub the bottom every 4 to 6 weeks. If you’ve been using other paints and only diving on the boat every four months, no wonder it takes 2+ hours to clean it. I almost recently applied copper coat on my bottom. After seeing these results, I wish I had. Congrats on the success so far.
Thanks for your comment, Greg.
We love the how-to videos. Keep'em coming please.
Thanks, will do!
Great seeing you back!
Thanks Diane, I assume you are talking about Rebecca. Get her nice and bored during a quarantine and she becomes a big asset to these videos.
Hi Patrick and Rebecca. As always - a great and informative video. I would love to see more videos on sailing skills for blue water (and non-blue water) sailing. You may have covered some of this as part of other videos? A few ideas? ANCHORING - choosing an anchorage and a spot, the process that works for you and Rebecca, 'emergency' procedures, etc. DOCKING - what works for the two of you during everyone's favorite boating event. HEAVING TO. CRUISING AS A COUPLE - How do you and Rebecca divide/share responsibilities during a trip, plan for and execute a trip (happily), etc. Carolyn and I are trying to find a groove on our new (to us) boat.
Hi Dave, always great to hear from you. Many of the pre haulout videos are about sailing or operating a boat away from an anchorage. Those go way back to leaving Sri Lanka, when I first started making these videos. But, as you can imagine, since I didn't know anything about making videos, the early videos are a bit bumpy and lack the editing that the newer ones do. The next video, we put up on the 30th of April, will be about sailing out of Richards Bay to East London, S.Africa. The second part of that will be sailing on to Hout Bay, near Cape Town. There are some unconventional sail handling shown plus Predictwind and other routing information. You will see, I pretty much singlehand this sailboat. I am so used to it, I just don't need the help, although there are times, help does make things much easier. Rebecca is our electronics maestro and enjoys that, so does most of our route planning. Sometimes I disagree but that is rather seldom. In the second video of sailing to Hout Bay, I highly recommend granny bars at the mast. I do most of the main sail handling at the mast and the granny bars are a tremendous help. Wish I had put them on a decade ago.
Copper coat, a product some swear by others swear at. I would like a definite answer on why some applications fail. Like your videos, keep up the good work. Fair winds and following seas.
Yes, watch our Coppercoat application video as we try to discover some of the reasons others have a hard time with a successful Coppercoat job. Many boat owners hired professionals to apply their Coppercoat, but it appears even they do not always read or follow the application directions, and hence there have been a few disastrous results of Coppercoat applications!
@@RVLifeNOW Thanks for the reply. I have watched your videos. I even met with the coppercoat guy at the Annapolis sailboat show. At that time I wasn't well exposed to the many users who have had successes/failures.
I do love your videos that you put together for upkeep on the yacht and your explaining what other products or ideas previously tried to get the results that you do. I am now a subscriber to your channel. Keep up the great work and ideas for maintaining Brick House along with the short cuts that you benefit from.
Dean, thank you for the joining us and the positive feedback. That helps to keep us motivated.
Thank you again for sharing! we are tune to your news. Hout Bay looks a really nice place, I wish I could sail to that place in the future. Can you make a video about fees and costs over there, just general stuff! Love to see you are always looking so good and happy. Wish you fair winds, whenever they come!
That is a good idea, Juan.
I applied CopperCoat to my Catalina 470's bottom last June, and have been quite pleased with the results too. I used cold galvanized zinc on the running gear, and that was a disaster. I had the boat out of the water in Dec/Jan for some other work, and redid the running gear with PropSpeed - need to jump in the water soon and check on things. Hope you're enjoying Hout Bay and the Cape Town area - your video of the back side of Table Mountain made me a bit homesick!
We are all still in lockdown in Hout Bay. But it is an easy walk to the stores if we need anything. Don't wait too long to wipe your Propspeed or some of the harder growth can get a better grip. I found the more often it is wiped, the better. Thanks for the tip on the cold galvanized zinc. It is always good to know what does not work. Where are you living now?
@@RVLifeNOW We're in a marina in Hollywood, FL. Lockdown is not too bad here. Talking to friends in SA, sounds like things are almost like a police state there.
@@davidhoy7605 For us in Hout Bay, it is not bad. I see plenty of locals walking around, to and from the store. We do worry about the people who live day to day though, as there are no tourists to buy their carvings or give them money for fish to feed to their befriended sea lions or to buy food for themselves.
awesome Captain...good to see your'e enjoying lockdown.
Not sure we are enjoying lockdown but getting a little head on videos (but not by much) -Rebecca

Isnt the miracle cloth amazing ?
Thank you, Peregrinegrace, it is always encouraging to get positive feedback.
Hi Patrick, hi Rebecca, thanks for great video. May I suggest you get yourself a "Woolly Bear" in combination with a Dry Suit and sufficient lead weights to give neutral buoyancy and even after hours in cold water you'll not feel the cold. This set up also backs up as a survival suit (without the weights of course).
Ya...that sounds interesting..will have to google that one. Even with 20 minute cleaning of the prop and Coppercoat, we will need to find a way to stay warm, and it sounds like that could bee a solution if not too voluminous ... we don’t have tons of space on the boat! -Rebecca
@@RVLifeNOW Check Typhoon Dry suit and Diving shops for "woolly bears".
@@RVLifeNOW PS "Woolly Bears" are now called Undergarments or Thermals.
john white ah ok! A dry suit would be great. I may have to check that out! -Rebecca
@@RVLifeNOW1) What is the thickness of your existing wet suit ? I always had a minimum thickness of 8 mm wet suit for summer use in UK waters. A dry suit was a must for winter dives in UK waters.
2) Are you aware that you can use socks and T shirts under a wet suit to provide extra thermal layer, it could make a difference for what you do. It's not as if you are going deep and the wet suit compresses and is less thermal efficient.
3) I always used a dry suit in combination with wet suit boots and ordinary everyday socks, wet suit gloves and double wet suit head cover in winter UK waters.
Many thanks. Still keen to cc but in uk atm and we have a steel biat so waiting to see the state if the barrier coat - may be worth going right back and redoing the epoxy before even thinking about it.
Ref cleaning, use a broken windsurfer boom - 1 arm - with whatever cleaning device on end. A piece of wide plastic tubing with water bottles inside helps push the sponge etc onto the hull whilst the curve and stiffness of the boom is ideal.
Cool! Loving the coppercoat on my boat!
Good to see that lock down is not getting you down. I wonder if a high pressure washer with an angled brush attachment on a long extension pole and operated from a tender alongside would do the trick for cleaning the bottom. It works very well for cleaning algae off the walls of my swimming pool.
Hi Bert! No boredom here. There are always more little boat projects that Rebecca thinks up and then the videos take a tremendous amount of work. I used to operate a lot of 3,000psi pressure washers with a 15 degree tip or once in a while a rotating 0 degree tip. I think that is what would be needed under water and could be difficult to hold onto from a dinghy, maybe it would work better from a dock. If used by a diver, I wonder if it would be more of a jet propulsion for the person using it. That could be fun. Now we need a restraining system and it would be interesting to give it a try. It might work on our friends boat, but this Coppercoat was easy enough to clean with the soft sponge. We hope you and Hazel are doing well.
@@RVLifeNOW
Jet propulsion? Yessiree. I did the pool by getting in the water with goggles & snorkel and a plain straight nozzle at first. I experimented a bit and found that, even with flippers, it was hard to swim against the jet. In the end, I put on my ankle length gumboots to improve traction and did the job standing up. So some sort off anchoring for a diver will be needed (or prepare to be very very tired)
Mind you, I've also found my washer will take paint off a wall so maybe not a good idea on fibreglass.
bertkutoob doesn’t sound like a good idea on Coppercoat then either :) I’d hate to blow it off the boat! -Rebecca
Super convient to have a buddy boat to compare results with.
Yes, that was a stroke of luck and does make us feel we went in the right direction with Coppercoat.
great detail in all your videos....
Thanks for watching JIMBO.
That's a good comparison. Looking good so far. That water can get pretty cold down there. Interesting boat next to yours from London. Colin Archer sort of look or something similar to Sir Robin Knox Johnstons boat.
Yes...it was good to have such a convenient comparison to see what antifouling is doing at this point, compared to what our Coppercoat is doing. And to see how different it was for cleaning the bottom! It really used to take 2 or 3 hours to clean the bottom when done regularly. Now it’s less than 20 minutes for one person. If I was a better wife, it would just be 10 minutes each!!! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
😂
I clean boat bottoms and use a dry suit in cold weather. Best ever!
Totally agree!
Be great to see this growth and then how the hull looks by simply going out for a sail. What active water flow does in keeping growth off. Great video! Here in the PNW I don’t think copper is even legal now. Huge push for bio only options. Have to research that as we are coming up on our own bottom work following this lockdown we’re in. '
Check with Jim at Coppercoat, U.S.A., he can tell you about local regulations. From what I understand, Coppercoat is welcome in the state of California as it is not the normal ablative that falls to the bottom of the harbor.
Wow what a difference.
Thanks
Great instructional video. I have used Propspeed many years now but have always had a professional do the job but seeing your video I think I can do this. I also wish I could use Coppercoat but with an aluminum hull it is risky business. I know I can use a barrier coat but one scratch and those copper ions will start eating away at my hull. We have a retractable keel so we do beach the boat occasionally so the possibility of a scratch is real.
Yes, I suppose with the retractable keel, a barrier coat may not work so well. I wonder if the rest of the boat can be barrier and Coppercoat-ed
I have heard of it being done but constantly checking for small scratches on the hull in high latitudes would be a real bother. Oddly enough my keel is steel so that is one area I could actually apply the Coppercoat with impunity.
Patrick, I thought you were a bit brave going in that water. I dived a lot around the SA Coastline and let me give you one tip. Before going into the water, down a half bottle of OB's,(Old Brown Sjerrie), it work! Lol. Please carry on with your informative videos.
The water certainly is chilly but.....anything for a video! Next time, I will take your advise on the Old Brown!
Pieter, which size bottle are you referring to? I fondly remember buying the big jugs and sharing with friends when out sailing on Table Bay in the winter. Half a big jug, and Patrick would not be feeling a thing ;-).
Yes please go sailing!!!
I am editing that video now. It will have to be a two part. First part will be from Richards Bay to East London then the second part will be to Hout Bay. Incredible currents, and some good off the wind sailing "how to" videos. A little bit about sea sickness. I am trying to work in something a bit different too. A clip of sea sickness of old.
Hi thanks for the video! It looks like all the gel coat and rudder repairs are doing well, glad to see that's working out. I imagine where your sailing makes a big difference with fouling. I never had this much trouble keeping my hull clean sailing in Alaska.
Sailing in the tropics and being in dirty estuaries or rank marinas supplies all the nutrients go foul the bottom quickly.
@@RVLifeNOW Hi thanks for the reply hope you guys are doing well. I tried talking my wife into another boat after we left Alaska but ended up in eastern Washington instead.. I can't get interested in a lake boat, I would feel trapped. : )
My daughter and son in law are threatening to move from Alaska to Florida soon. If they do I am tempted to buy a 36 foot boat in Florida or some where near by to sail the Inter coastal water way and the Caribbean. I am not sure how I will like that after sailing the inside passage and the coast of Alaska. It will be a completely different experience. I guess that's the point of doing it. : )
There was coppercoat already on my 63 Pearson I recently picked up. looks like it was done just the other day but it's been on there for years.
That is very good to hear. I hope we get the same longevity. Thanks for your information.
I was in Fiji some years ago & a friend asked me if i wanted to go halves in some antifoul bought from there navy , I put a couple of coats on & 4 years later it was still working , I found out it was 30 years old ? I got an honest 3/4 to 1 knot from changing from a fixed prop to a kiwi prop , great post - Fair winds .
Yeah sounds like you got some very special antifouling paint there! And yes...we would never go back to a fixed prop. Maybe 3/4 to 1 knot isn’t much to some, but for us that’s 20-25% faster!!! That is significant! Thanks for your comment and for watching! -Rebecca
I'd be interested in what your buddy said when he saw the differences in the outcomes of the two paint systems especially if he had his done by a yard.
He was already very disappointed as that could easily be seen from the dock, but he also put a GoPro on a pole and got a better look under the water. He did not have the best contractor in Richards Bay. But we see yards screw up boats everywhere in the world. In Malaysia, a friend paid a yard to put antifouling on his catamaran. A week later, that antifouling was falling off in sheets so he had to haul out in another yard and have it all done again.
Great video,...again... I’m very interested in the Kiwi prop, and how it performs. Great to see you in the water after that torturous refit period. Regarding the steel wire brushing, the issue there is that what happens is that iron gets smeared onto the stainless surface. That iron then allow rusting to occur which then progresses into the base material causing pitting which is very hard to repair. What you should do when the shaft is stripped is hire or borrow from somewhere one of my WeldBrush (or really any of its many copiers) machines (see WeldBrush.com) which will allow you to electro polish the shaft in situ. These units remove iron from the surface of the stainless first and then other elements more slowly to bring the surface up to an electrical polish finish. The units use phosphoric acid which is electrically heated up to 400C exactly at the surface by the brush making the acid extremely reactive giving a fast reaction. The conductive high temperature brush that makes the process work was my invention some 20 years ago in Australia. I’ll watch you Hookah video next for guidance on what the important things to know and what to buy.
Thanks, William. Very good information.
Interesting video. Thanx!
Happy greetingz, Wim
Always good to hear from you Wim.
It is nice to hear all of your hard work is paying off with easier maintenance. Some sailing videos would be a good change of pace for this channel. Sailing to Madagascar or Reunion might be nice.
At the end of two videos we did some clips from Madagascar, about lemurs, the coolest animals, whales and some street scenes. There is a specific video on the remote island of Rodrigues. I am working of part one of the trip from Richards Bay, to East London. That should be a fun one, at least it is fun for me putting it together. Thanks, Pittsburgh, for watching, and your comment.
@@RVLifeNOW Your Rodrigues video was great! ua-cam.com/video/qLSXkTxLRzM/v-deo.html Thanks for the recommendation. I see it was produced way before I subscribed to your channel. I will have to go back to the beginning and see all of the episodes I missed. It is interesting that there is no narration because it is such a contrast to your current productions.
Glad you liked it. We also have a channel called Travel and Animals...it has completely NO sailing videos, about some of the places we have been...

Glad you enjoy it! It always helps the analytics to have comments so thanks for that.
Really enjoy your channel! Thank You!
Daniel Wolfe Well thanks so much for watching! And your nice compliment! More how to videos, or wanna go sailing? -Rebecca on SV Brick House
Cam you do a video of your average monthly expenditures of living aboard?
Maybe, one day. We have so much other material to first get through. Thanks for the idea.
Thanks for sharing, great video
Thanks for watching!
😷👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice to see the coatings working. Everything turned out nice! How's the solid fuel heater working out?
Yes...we are so happy to have Coppercoat and Propspeed working so well. We knew Propspeed would because we have used it a number of times. But I wasn’t sure about Coppercoat especially when we were not able to follow the Coppercoat instructions perfectly. Very pleasantly surprised.
The Cubic Mini wood stove...really really good. Each time we have a fire onboard, I feel complete joy...it seems to make the atmosphere on the boat quiet, and peaceful...and so nice and warm. Sometimes I get nervous we won’t be able to find wood when we get in to the thick of it, and will be cold...but when I feel that warmth, I feel more confident that we will find wood and have great adventures doing it! We have definitely put some great products on the boat this year. We have quite a few more to tell you about too. 10 months out of the water, and then another 2 here, we have had a GREAT year of updates and renovations to Brick House!!!-Rebecca
@@RVLifeNOW Nice!🙂 Congratulations!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 will the stove burn anthracite coal? I realize this may be a PITA to get a hold of and makes a mess in the boat. Please keep us updated, I'm looking forward to more videos!😷👋🏻
Good job guys
Thank you, Brad.Thanks for watching.
Patrick, I had to replace a bronze strut on a 35 year-old Catalina which had turned pink and was no longer structurally sound. We assumed galvanic interactions ate the zinc out of the bronze strut. Luckily Catalina Direct could supply a new strut and instructions but they claimed the strut didn't need a zinc because the fibreglass and the cutlass bearing kept the strut isolated from other meta!s. We noted nearly all struts in the yard had zincs, so we drilled a hole and stuck one on, but much smaller than yours.Have you ever heard the theory that a strut zinc is not needed?
Will get Patrick to reply to this one later...I’m not qualified to answer it ;) -Rebecca
Very informative video-thx! These ecologically friendly antifoul paints have one big drawback- they don't work! Thanks to the over zealous "preservationists" driving our regulations. The old red Cu bottom paints worked very well in Alaska- only had to scrub the bottom once per year and repaint (of course much colder water than the tropics). Government boats and ships can use whatever they want to- they are exempt from the ridiculous regulations! I worry a bit about copper coat because the State of WA and Ca originally passed regulations outlawing Cu based bottom paints. Wa suspended the regulations since no one could find a suitable ecologically friendly bottom paint! One article indicated you will have to scrub the bottom (in Ca warm waters) every 2 weeks!) and that all you'll have to do hire a diver!! Thx again!
From what we have read, the state of California gave an award to Coppercoat for being ecofriendly. But I agree with you. The endless overpopulating of America, the endless bulldozing, paving and building, and garbage dumps, which they like to now call "land fill", creates so much pollution runoff from cities and towns which runs into rivers and streams to pollute the coast, yet they want to blame so much on pockets of sailboats.
One of the greatest challenges we have is to protect marine life by whatever means necessary, as a matter of survival, on this planet.. As I remember, copper in antifouling in Australia was causing deformities in shellfish in rivers which was one of the triggers for banning this type of antifouling. Apart from mining plastics from the oceans on an industrial scale, the next big thing is to ban Nano plastics in washing powders, which is used to scrub clothes cleaner. Unfortunately they have found these particles in fish proving that the particles have entered the food chain. In the bigger picture, having to clean the bottom of your boat is a small price to pay. At university, someone put a Macdonalds hamburger on the notice board. Nine months later there was no mould on the same hamburger. Maybe everyone should glue hamburgers to the underside of their boat.
I think you may be thinking of copper in paint. This is encapsulated copper in epoxy...much much different. This doesn’t release copper in to the water, and doesn’t kill the organisms. This just makes it an inhospitable environment to do much growing on because they can’t burry in to it. Hence why the marine growth brushes off like dust. We care greatly for the environment and one of the reasons we chose Coppercoat is so that very little would be released in to the water. .-Rebecca
That side of the Atlantic is freezing cold. I use 3mm diving gloves when I use too dive. Any good boat's for sale in the marine. Thanks for sharing this video 👍😁🍷🇿🇦. Stay safe
The water here is very chilly but people here grow up with it and don't know the difference and how ocean water is supposed to be, so they just put on a wet suite and go in! No cruising boats for sale right now but I have heard rumors 2 might be coming up. One an old odd boat and another a new beautiful, aluminum, go anywhere boat.
Nice video. Where are you and are you in lockdown there? Be safe!
Thanks, dahveed. We are in Hout Bay, S.Africa. Looks like it can be more weeks before the lock down is ended. The time makes us do some of the not so important little jobs around the boat. These videos also take a tremendous amount of time to edit together so no boredom here.
Love you guys ! ! !
Thanks Ocean Rockets! Thanks for watching our Coppercoat and Propspeed update!
ALWAYS GREAT & ENTERTAINING.....very enjoyable.....l have the same combo on my bottom BUT two.....45ft cat.....very happy....cheers
Oh , maybe go to warmer water or pick a side each & who ever gets there side done first...properly!!! , doesn't have to do the dishes for a week...AhHaHa
Thanks, Peter, great idea.
Glad to hear the Copper coat is working out for you. There have been a lot of reports of issues recently - most, I think, are application issues. It seems you have worked it out. I shared with others Patrick's trick of 'bagging' the prop when anchored for long periods in one spot. Do you think with Propspeed you will still need to do that?
Marcel, always good to hear from you. When we were in Zanzibar, for a month, I bagged the prop there which , I think, helped to preserve the Propspeed. I should do it here in Hout Bay but who knows what will happen with this lock down so we want to keep our ability to drop the dock lines and leave the dock on a moments notice.
Excellent stuff :-)
Thanks for watching our Coppercoat and Propspeed update!
I always wondered if an aluminium pipe with a brush on the end bent to roughly match the curve of the hull could be used from deck to scrub the top 3-5 feet of the hull.
I am going to try something like that before we leave here. Also, someone showed me his fine mesh fishing net which he string under his boat with a bungee on one end, secured to the toe rail while the other has a line coming up to the opposite side of the boat. He scrubs his boat with the net and the bungee serves as the second person to operate it.
@@RVLifeNOW that would work for the bow back to the keel, but then there's the keel in the way and behind that the prop shaft and rudder.
Great
Thanks Mr Me
Have you ever tried using a plastic windshield scraper to remove debris from the hull and/or a 3M brimlite scrubbie instead of 80 grit sandpaper?
I have never used 80 grit paper to clean the bottom of my hull. I have used scrapers of all sorts and different scrubbies. After the application of Coppercoat, and before launching, the Coppercoat must be sanded prior to launching. Please watch our Coppercoat application video.
@@RVLifeNOW Oh, I thought that is what you mentioned in your video.
He used 80 grit sandpaper to sand the hull on the hard...and he meant that is the mistake that now has given him slime growth on the hull, though I think slime growth happens on Coppercoat bottoms...I think that using the 80 grit paper when he burnished the hull n Richards Bay, when we were on the hard, after the application of Coppercoat, that the 80 grit paper was not a mistake. -Rebecca on SV Brick House
I've had success using a 1800 psi power washer underwater to remove the growth and not damage the bottom
I can see how a pressure washer could be good up in the crevices of the knot meter paddle wheel and in some prop areas, plus the rudder to skeg area.
50 degree water is very cold to me. Looks like it worked great. I just splashed in December after a bottom job and havent touched it since splashing. We on the NC coast near the ocean. Well, within sight. No growth at the water Line so far. The water is cold though. I'll wait til it warms up then jump in. I had prop speed on our motor yacht and it worked great for 1 year. If you operate in deep water your good. The first sand bar you cross or shallow water it will burn the prop speed off fast. Its not good for ICW travelers. On a sailboat the prop may be far enough away from the sand. Thats the million dollar question.. For ocean traveling it would seem great.
The wet suite I have is my old one from Rhode Island. It worked pretty well up there but I no longer have the upper part. I should have first put on my thin shorty, which has long arms. Next time. I see divers in the water here often, cleaning hulls and they always seem comfortable when they come out so that built up my courage. Please keep in touch when you get your first real glimpse of your Coppercoat, I'd be interested to know how it is working for you.
@@RVLifeNOW sorry to miss lead you. I have pettit SR. Not cooper coat. I did try prop speed which got burned off fast due to the shallow water in the ICW.
@@pateallan7764 Okay, thanks.
What snorkeling gear are you using please? 🙂
Mixed, from all over the world. No special brand. None are all that stellar.
Enjoy Cape Town! My Hometown
I can't think of a better place to be locked down, than Hout Bay. Grocery stores and what we need are just a 15 minute walk away. Great scenery, here too. Not in the video we put up on Thursday, but the video we put up 2 weeks from Thursday, we will show scenes on our arrival in Beautiful Hout Bay.
Thanks How is prop speed feel after the clear coat. Mine feels like a silicone skin.
No mine doesn’t feel like a silicone skin. I think we didn’t make it smooth enough. Our patches work better than the old. The key really is extreme smoothness.
Copper, the reason why the British navy nailed sheets of it to the bottom of their wooden ships.
And now, it seems, suspending it in an epoxy is as good as one can have it these days.
thank you
You're welcome.
RIP Patrick
Yea
You are one of the best sailing channels out there, BUT, somehow your video title and description is automatically translated to my lanugage and it makes very little sense. I suspect this is something you can turn on/off. If so, can you please turn it off? :)
Btw, I love the How to videos but also the sailing tips. A mix of both is the best.
It’s either all on or all off ;) What country are you in? Do most of the people there speak English or is there a chance having an even bad translation will at least give them some clue what the video is about? Which language? Which country? We have been watching the stats and only 40% of our viewers are watching our videos in English, so it seems to be that some people appreciate knowing at least minority what the video is about. How are the closed captions in your language. Please let me know what your language is, and what service may have a better translation...I’m just using Google Translate. Rebecca
@@RVLifeNOW Hi Rebecca. First of all, leave them all on, I found a solution ;) I'm from Norway and most people here understand English but for those who don't, google translate is better than nothing. I never use closed caption but I tried it out on this one and it was a little comical (turned the propspeed panit into a car ect. hehe).
I got the idea that maybe I could try and change the language on my UA-cam account to English and that did the trick! Now I see you title and description in English, yeay! :)
Sorry for kind of wasting your time on this one.

Copper coat requires that you wipe it down a couple times a year. I use lanolin on the props and driveshaft.
Never heard of doing that on the prop and driveshaftZzz have always used prop speed. But yes… Coppercoat requires wipedowns… I have a diver so it every 2 months mostly to clean prop and shaft but also to keep the Coppercoat in good condition.
