I have been using the Ryobi RY40511 over the last week pretty extensively, and I am happy to report that I was very pleasantly surprised at the power, run-time, and battery life on it.
I like the fact that it uses the 40V lithium battery packs that are compatible with other Ryobi 40V outdoor tools, and expanding will be very easy without continually buying more chargers and more batteries.
There is no more driving to the gas station, buying gas, mixing gas, pull starting the chainsaw, and then breathing the fumes! Simply charge the battery, plug it in place, and start cutting!
In this review I will go over the various features of the Ryobi Chainsaw, and then you will get the see what it can actually cut down!

I just bought myself the Makita 36V equivalent (XCU04) with a 16” bar. Battery chainsaws have come so far! The first 18v Ryobi 10” saw I tried literally couldn’t cut the 13” ash log I borrowed the saw for. I would have been cutting that thing for HOURS. Now we have these higher voltage saws that can compete with smaller gas saws, and the XCU04 had no problem getting through that ash log so I can turn it into usable lumber. Yup, the same log has been under my porch drying out for many years. I hope to make an electric guitar with it some day.
Just bought this Tool Toy with an extra battery at Home Depot in Colorado Springs. I've used chainsaws before up to 20inch gas ones. This however is my first owned chainsaw. I'm one Woman working for herself doing gardening, landscaping and xeroscaping. We had a bad Spring Snow Storm here and trees went down....most of these people around here now are Transplants from Cali and back East...their piling their branches out on the curb and street thinking that the City will pick them up.

I had one of these that I got preowned but in like new condition. I was able to cut through a medium sized tree but with great difficulty and it drained a whole battery. I was angry until I noticed that the idiot previous owner installed the chain backwards. After correcting that, it worked like a dream. It's a great chain saw as long as you accept the limitations, it'll do great for small-medium trees; just don't use it to cut down a redwood.

My best use for a battery operated saw like this is for work around on my 5 acres...carry on my tractor for cutting overhanging limbs, small to medium sized trees, cut away downed limbs and trees blocking my lonfpg driveway, and put in my Tacoma when out running trails to remove downed or blocking trees!
I like the fact that I get to take a break every couple of hours to charge thape battery back up...being 70 makes one appreciate that! Ha ha
I can see this being great for quick jobs where you just need to clean up a few problem branches or stuff that fell from a storm where it would be a hassle to go get the gas chain saw out.
I love your reviews. I think you do a great job with them.
Also chain breaks are important because it’s a safety feature that stops the saw in the event of kickback. And it’s also a good safety feature to have for when your walking around.

Purchased one a 2 days ago and love it. It only took an hour or so to charge battery.
Plenty of power to cut and trim trees.

Glad to hear you love it. Bad storms here in Texas and have used it to cut trees and limbs that have fallen.
I have 2 batteries (I purchase the weed eater too) and the 2 batteries last longer than I do when cutting trees.

I like his reviews, they are always very good. The only thing I will absolutely disagree with is the chain break explanation. Yes a chain break should be used at idle But all chainsaws should have inertia chain break, meaning that if you touch the top of the bar to an unseen item and the saw kicks that chain break will lock and you will not be hurt.
Another awesome review. Never liked ryobi tools. Their quality has always been subpar to Milwaukee and Hitachi and other big name brands but this actually looks like it has a lot of power for an electric. Something my mom would benefit from having around. Thanks for making these videos. I always look forward to them and watch them all.

Chain brakes aren't just to stop the chain spinning after the trigger is released; if you catch your tip and the saw kicks back at your face, your forward hand hits the chain brake before you can think to release the trigger. All saws ought to have brakes.
I'm also disappointed that there are no dog teeth on this saw. I'm guessing the motor torque isn't high enough for them to be useful?
Otherwise looks like a handy tool. I love my Ryobi 40V string trimmer. I'll probably pick up this saw sooner or later.
I agree, chain brakes do serve that safety feature. I'm not entirely sure if a cordless saw would need an actual "brake", because the motor dies down so quickly. It's more just an on/off switch. That way, like you said, if you happen to leave you finger on the trigger when a kick back happens, your hand will trip the switch, killing the power to the trigger. I actually have the Greenworks 40v 14 inch chainsaw, and it does not come with a working chain brake. So, I opened it and installed my own. Now my guard is a functioning on/off safety switch. I like it much better.

Yeah I think that people actually like seeing them being used (in situations that they would in real life) to be certain that the tools can perform....prior to dropping a bunch of money on them & hoping for the best. Oh, and thanks for noticing that I try to speak clearly....I typically re-shoot a scene if an "umm" or "uhh" pops out. haha ;)

Ah cordless electric chain saw.... the best chainsaw type for zombie killing. None of that messing with a 2 stroke trying to get it started while you are slowly being eaten alive.

I could use this for cutting up long pine branches. Glad you mentioned the oil leaking out. For long term storage I can just drain the oil. Is there a longer life 40 volt battery - upgrade for this chainsaw ?
Looks like a pretty good option for a home owner. Home Depot lists this chainsaw at $129.99 for the bare tool and $199.99 for tool, battery, and charger. Wish there were more tools in Ryobi's 40 volt line up, but as it stands it's lack of general versatility makes me hesitant on a purchase. Great review, as always! Thanks for uploading!

My friend owns a Ryobi 14" 40volt 4ah chainsaw I bought for him and got a free 40volt 2 ah . The 40volt 4ah does easily what it's suppose to so my friend tried the 40volt 2ah the battery overheated with 2 solid charge bars on the battery still . Had to wait a half hr to cool the battery down . Also the hotter is is outside the harder it is on your batteries . Under 4ah . I would not recommend and ryobi kit unless it came with a 4ah 40volt battery or higher the better .
I think he missed some worthwhile intel. How about the included battery capacity and options in that regard, chain gauge and bar mount size for possible sharing across other platforms? And the fact when working with electric saws necessary effective communication among a crew is more likely.

Too bad they limited that battery compatibility. I have the first generation but haven't tested it yet. My neighbor has a 18v 8" and was able to tackle a 14' eucalyptus on one battery until the stump.

Great video, however i must point out that your incorrect with the chain brake and its use. It's a safety feature, so if your cutting and the saw kicks back towards your face, your wrist and left hand will automatically activate the brake on the upwards movement. Thus saving your body from receiving a nasty cut.
Starebear100 I found that out after making this video (thanks to a viewer like yourself). Up until then I always thought it was solely to keep the chain from spinning at idle. Thanks for pointing it out!
Does this take the big batteries from the mower? It looks like a handy tool. Is it quieter than a normal chainsaw or a sawsall?
It will take any 40 volt Ryobi. And yes it is more quiet then gas
will any 14" chain fit?
I know this is a strange question, but if you take the chain off, will it still run? And if so, does it still sound basically the same? I'm wondering if this is a good "stage prop" option. Thanks!
Yes. That’s typically what haunted houses use to scare people....chainsaws with no chains. You still have the exhaust fumes to deal with though...don’t use it indoors.
You've tested both ego and ryobi lawn tools, which one would you rather choose?
omara1023 I have not had a lot of overlaps other than the chainsaw. The Ryobi is $100 cheaper, but does not have a chain brake & also uses a proprietary bar & chain. The EGO has a chain brake & uses a standard Oregon bar & chain. My suggestion would be to look at the other tools in each lineup & make your choice based on how you may want to expand in the future.
what bar and chain lubricant should i use if i ran out of the one ryobi had when i bought the chain saw?
Any "bar & chain" oil will work.

My Ryobi 40 volt wont start after infrequent use. Batteries are fine but when I place them in the saw it won't start.

If you're using a normal saw and the chain is spinning with no throttle, you have bigger problems the chain brake won't help
What! You say there is a chain saw cover to keep things clean when you put on your truck seat....
Every one knows you are supposed to keep the chain saw in your lap to protect your seats.
Why not include a sharpening file?
I'm curious. That tree looked like a 'Tree of Heaven' (ailanthus). If so, they are a horrible aggressive non native invasive species. They are pretty attractive trees but their propagation is almost impossible to stop. If I'm correct.....you should read about this tree and it's rather frightening existence. Your video is very very well done. Thanks.

I have this saw , it's good for light work . However , your battery life appeared to be a bit longer than mine . I only get about 30 minutes run time . The batteries cost around 90.00 new . The saw costs around 160.00 , I would be better off buying 2 saws . That way I get a replacement saw , battery and chain not to mention another charger . Now would I buy another saw , probably not . Think ahead and consider what you plan to to do with a chain saw , then buy smart .
It’s always a better plan to buy a “kit”....rather than a single battery. The good news is that if you buy a mower for example, the same battery with it will also work in this chainsaw 👍

Il dispose d'un réglage rapide chaîne bouton de tension , un frein de chaîne , une batterie de plus grande capacité , "dents" à saisir dans le bois pendant la coupe, et d'un bar de l'Oregon et de la chaîne ( dimensionnement Standard & moins coûteux de remplacer plus tard) . Note- these saws are now obsolete as the new Ryobi batteries do not fit them. Unless you have an old battery that is still kicking- these saws are now junk. Thanks ryobee

It was large based on the target audience for this particular chainsaw....not aimed at a tree service.

Got one of these for christmas, has a lot of power but the battery dies after cutting TWO LOGS! Will be returned, These battery chainsaws are not worth it at all.
a google user Well.....I cut that giant tree down and sliced the whole thing up on camera on the same battery charge. If you are heating with firewood, and are wanting to cut cords of wood at a time, then no battery powered chainsaw is going to cut it......I suggest either buying some extra batteries and/or using a gas powered chainsaw in that case.
