Two big differences that the saw is not the same is the chain and bar size. The older version has a .43 size chain the new one has a .50 size, so the new chain is heavier even though it is still a 14” and 52 link chain. That being the case the the bar is a different size also. These chainsaws will not interchange bar and chain now safely. Please make note of this !

I’m glad Ryobi improves their designs, however I wish they did a better job getting things right the first time. I find that they fix frustrations, but I can’t justify upgrading my tools that often if I’ve purchased an early model of a tool.

I bought this saw with Charger & Battery ( No Case ) at Home Depot off one of their clearance end caps for $199.00 and should have bought 2 or 3.
I bought it 2 weeks before Hurricane IAN came through and broke off a very large limb off a very large tree.
I almost returned that saw having thoughts I could use that $199.00 somewhere else better.
When I forgot where I put My gas saw I needed to cut that limb up so I used it, and now I can't return it.
Don't want to return it now.
I cut that limb down to size as if I was use=ing a gas powered chainsaw .
So I cut off another huge limb that was 40 feet long and growing parallel to the ground.
I didn't cut it completely through but over halfway and got down and stood back and watch it for about 5 minutes and noticed it was getting lower as I watched.
It slowly lowered itself to the ground till it stopped.
I climbed back up and finished cutting from the top and it fell completely to the ground.
That was limb number 2 and I cut it up and moved the debris.
It took Me over a week to cutdown the 7 major limbs and 8 foot of one of the main trunks.
I did all the cutting with this Ryobi 40 volt 14 inch bar Chainsaw.
I'm 68 years old and retired so getting down safely was more important than getting it down fast.
I tell anyone that will listen this story because its true.
This the ONLY Ryobi 40 volt tool I own and it is a GREAT SAW..
    Ken in Florida

I have the newer model and like it. However, the chain would often come off while cutting. I contacted Ryobi and they sent me a new adjustment kit - screw, plate, oil seal, adjustment knob. Unfortunately I didn't pay close enough attention to the parts I took out and there's a small 1/2" square piece of plastic that I can't figure out where it goes. I'm pretty sure it goes where the 2 gears join but I can't figure out the direction it goes. Guess I'll keep looking at videos. I think it's a great saw, and for my minimal needs it's perfect. I like it much better than a gas model because I always have trouble starting tools that have a gas motor, including trimmers. I also found a Ryobi 40 Volt blower at an outlet store in Pigeon Forge, TN that was normally $119. I got it for $55 new, and it uses the same battery my chain saw does.

The main reason for Ryobi to redesign the battery compartment was the necessity to accommodate the new high amp batteries that are physically larger and will not fit the older one (6ah and more), why didn’t you mention this in your video?

Bought the newer 14" and thought it was fantastic until I realized it didn't have a chain brake. Since my number one goal in using a chain saw is not getting hit in the neck or face with a moving chain I returned it and got the new 16" that has a brake. Unfortunate as I actually liked the 14" much more except for the deal breaker on the safety side.

I have the newer 40v, and the older but green 18v chainsaws.
    My opinion
The 40v is great, BUT. The ramp up time is what KILLS the battery life. I get alot farther on my 18v with a 3ah, over the 40v with the 4ah.
Slow and steady seems to win every time for me.
On a side note. It took 2 returns to HD to exchange my first 2 40v saws. Each one, the oilers wouldnt put out. My 3rd one im stuck with, leaks while sitting for a day or 2

I know you just did this comparison a few months ago, but do you have any plans to review the new 16” 40v chainsaw (RY40550)? They’ve replaced the plastic notch/hooks on the front with metal and added a manual chain break.
The only thing I saw that might be a negative based on your reviews is they moved to opening for the chain bar oil back to the side, but the display window to see how full it is is still the same larger size as it is on the RY40503.
I just bought the 14” saw today, but for $50 more I think I’m going to return it and get the 16” for the extra cutting length and couple improved features.

Same actual 14" chainsaw. The difference is what is or is not included in the box.
RY40503BTL is just the 14" 40V chainsaw, listing at $149.00.
      RY40530 is the same 14" 40V chainsaw plus one (1) 4AH 40V battery (OP4040A1) and one (1) 2-in-1 battery / USB charger (OP403A), listing at $199.00.

ONLY THING I WOULD RECOMMEND IS THAT THEY ADD AND INSERT THAT ALLOWS U TO USE IT BOTH WITN A CORD AND ALSO WITH YOUR BATTERY SO THAT WAY IF U HAVE A LOT OF WORK AHEAD OF YOU THEN YOU CAN USE THE CORD OPTION IF YOU JUS HAVE A FEW TREES 🌲 TO CUT THEN JUS SLIDE THE BATTERY IN NOW THAT WOULD BE DOPE THAT WAY YOU CAN HAVE THE OPTION TO USE THE BATTERY OR THE CORD 💯😎
